Ore from the Mesabi and Cuyuna ranges in Minnesota often was sticky and would not have flowed into a self unloading system, delaying the adoption of self unloaders in the iron ore trade. In the 70's and 80's ore production was shifted to iron ore pellets that flow very well. Self unloader conversions soon followed and new ships were built as self unloaders.
