History of snow plows

It's good to see a young person interested in this stuff. That plow truck at 1:48 to 2:05 is a Walter. Almost the entire drive train of Walter trucks was unique, completely different from what was and continues to be standard on other brands, and absolutely an engineering marvel. For that alone, these trucks are worth learning about. It was always a small company, though, with most of their trucks being sold and operated in and near the state of New York.

Yes it is a Walter and I know that because it's actually me in my Cummins powered 1960 Walter ACBS . That vid was shot about 13 yrs ago on our farm in Maine . Pretty Cool , I laughed out loud when I saw my truck included in this Vid ... Good work

As Eric L said below The truck at 1:48 to 2:05 is indeed a Walter Snow Fighter .It's actually MY Walter Snow Fighter ! Imagine my surprise when I unexpectedly saw myself come around the corner in your vid ! That's a 1960 Walter ACBS powered by a 220 Cummins Diesel . That was taken about 13yrs ago on our farm in Maine ! Nice Job on your Vid !

Before they came up with power sanders I recall seeing 1 or 2 men standing in the back of the truck shoveling sand by hand. They did a very good job.

The horse drawn roller was used to pack the snow for sleighs, cutters, bobsleds and etc...before spring and sometimes earlier, the roads were shaved by horse drawn shavers to reduce the thickness before spring breakup...then came the mud season, until the roads were dry enough to be graded...Later when autos were used in winter, track laying tractors, heavy trucks and graders kept the roads clear...in poorer areas horse drawn "V" plows were pulled...In places where the snow is drifting or deep, rotary snow throwning equipment were used...years ago I saw one with wood wheels in use near the Canadian border...

New York have a very old bulldozer head V plow with two wings. Oh I know it’s very very old. I know they do have one somewhere I’m out in Albany storage that’s when they started out with New York State long time ago right before my time we have two guys standing outside in the rain outside in the snow with chains, bring the ring down, there was no hydraulics that’s the history you looking for that was the first of New York State snowing 🌨️

all the way up until 1980 we were still using the old spreaders that were run off the back wheel with a chainthe good thing about those were they would grind through any big chunk of Cinder you had in there also they would stop when you stopped so if you had to stop at a stop sign you didn't leave a pile of cinders behind you

Look into Oshkosh Corporation kid. They are the only company in the world that builds snowplow trucks one at a time from the ground up. No other company builds snow specific vehicles like Oshkosh.

Actually, you forgot about a company called FWD, that has been making snowplow trucks as long as Oshkosh has, and the two companies have their factories 10 miles away from one another...

@@thomasjsanford4369 I read many years ago that FWD no longer exists as a plow-truck company (nor do they make "work trucks" of any kind anymore), having been absorbed decades ago into another company that makes fire trucks. But yes, they were there in the very beginning, and if I'm not mistaken, they actually invented the modern style of front-driving axle. They were still making specialized work trucks (including plow trucks) as recently as the 1970s and possibly -80s.

@@ericl2969 Everything I've ever read on the topic was the FWD was the originator/original four wheel drive vehicle. Hence the "FWD." Just like the Bantam Motor Car Company was the inventor of the original Jeep. Nobody could get a short wheel base 4 wheel drive to go around sharp corners until Bantam figured that problem out.
