Oyo is where my ancestors came from. My whole family in Cuba practices IFA religion and many practice this religion on my Puerto Rican side too. We descend from a babalawo from Oyo and a priestess of Oshun who were both taken to Cuba during the slave trade. Every person in my family going back to 6 generations has been intiated into IFA or as we call it SANTERIA. It's been passed down through our family in an unbroken line. We know the odus, our prayers and songs are in Yoruba, which is 18th century Yoruba, frozen in time from when our ancestors were captured. We have drums for orishas and cook sacred foods for them IFA is practiced widely in Cuba, Brazil, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Peru Colombia Mexico and some African Americans are now turning to IFA as well. Gracias for this video, Ashe🙏🏿🙏🏾🙏🏽

Thank You again Dr. Oyinsan for this knowledge and our-story. I was wondering if you can give insight on migration of the Ewe people from Oyo kingdom and what led up to them leaving and scattering into places like Modern Ghana, Togo and Benin. I am curious because I have ancestry connected to Ewe and even further back Yoruba.

Oranyan's son founded the Benin empire, we are in a way connected. However, the Ondo's think that all other Yorubas are interior to them. How this came to be was never explained to me by my Father. Moreover, there were many attempts by the Benin empire and the water side Ikales to conquer Ondo land but their efforts were quashed by a powerful Balogun of Ondo and Ile-Oluji who is one of my forefathers. The Ondo people still sing praises to his name until today during traditional ceremonies. His name is Y'Elah, his forefathers migrated from the valley of Elah in todays Middle-East, the land that use to be called Judea. His mother was raised in the palace of Owu (Oba Atererejajuaiye). Ondo's were never subject to anybody but knew that they also defended from Odudua's wife that gave birth to a set of twins wish was taboo in those days. Because Odudua did not want to kill the woman and the twins as the custom demanded, he send them away with his most trusted security Chief with a copy of the kings crown. It is only the Igbo's that has the custom of killing twins in those days, hence we may have a common ancestry.

You all with your propaganda without any standing! When you are mentioning Balogun and palaces, and Y'Elah , etc, please mention their connectivity such as who was the Oba of Benin at such times and the years. We Benin said Izoduwa which was so named to conceal his name reaching ILEFE (meaning I have run and met wealth or without being killed) Remember he was a self-exiled prince of Benin named by the parent (Ogiso Owodo) as Ekaladerhan. One of Izoduwa (Oduduwas) sons was named OMONOYAN (meaning in Benin a precious child)! You Yariba named coined to Oromiya. These are straightforward and with solid backings. Now, you Yariba could not even explain where Oduduwa came from! Makin nonsense the "king" came from Mecca, from the East, East of where? Babalola was his father, Adegbero was his father, nonsense, you all can continue saying all your nonsense and we Benin enjoys them all because all you do is flailing all over the place.

Dr. Oyinsan, please note that the Benin never fought any of the western part of Nigeria most especially Oyo because we believe we have family lineage (Ekaladerhan- Izoduwa-Oduduwa, a son of Benin) with Oyo and Ilefe turned Ile-Ife. Omonoyan-Oromiyan son of Oduduwa established Oyo. The Benin understanding these did not use their formidable power as you correctly stated, towards the Yoruba.

@@omobanedo9602 Funny how Coconut-ish you sounded. Well, Benin did fought with their neighbours (hence, how did they become a kingdom). Then, to further enlighten you, Benin's influence on its western neighbour was strangled when Oyo reconquered Yoruba stateslike Akure oba n owo which were once under Benin (which suggests to u that they were previously conquered by Benin). Lastly, By the late 18 century, Benin couldn't even think of scratching Oyo's nose, but Oyo on the other hand fought Benin about 4 times or so, although there was not significant loss or gain, but the message is clear... Oyo (a its peak) wasn't Benin's mate. Please what do u mean by "Benin formidable power"? 😆 Evidence of Benin influence on its western neighbour is strongly present in owo (ondo state).

@@adeyemikolapo2158 There you go again, you are convoluting the story, and please see from your story by yourself... You stated.." Benin's influence on its western neighbour was strangled when Oyo reconquered Yoruba stateslike Akure oba n owo which were once under Benin (which suggests to u that they were previously conquered by Benin). Did you say the Oyo conquered Yoruba statelike Akure oba n owo, and was under Benin? Which war was that? Akure and most parts were really under Benin DOMAIN until Awolowo ENTERED INTO THE PICTURE WITH THE BRITISH IN TOW! You must understand that Benin was the LAST to be colonized and set under the European tutelage by which Yorubas, Hausa (Tafawa Balewa) were already under the British subjugation! How dare you say Benin, the city of blood, couldn't scratch the Oyo nose? We do not scratch nose, we conquer and PLANT a leader! Who did Oyo fight? When Benin is undeniably the empire spreading up to Ghana? At the end of 18th century? what the heck, while we were already in EKO (Lagos)? And the British busy trying to pry the Benin open until 1897? Where was Oyo in the story? Please go furlk yourself! And then you said, "evidence of the Benin present is still very present in Ondo"! Which is very true. You need a psychiatric evaluation for even saying that because it is true and you have judged or convoluted yourself; and what else? Oyo absence, is that right? Oyo went to part of Bandagry and the Yariba runaway slaves made up the rest, that all! ok

Yes, it is true that Yoruba and Benin are from same clans but they are more of Obatala than Oduduwa, All Yorubas are not decendant of Oduduwa , In Ile Ife there are others 16 chains of rulers which any of them can become King , that's why Oduduwa have his own house in ife apart from the palace, and because kingship tussle in ile ife between Oduduwa and others make some left ife to have their own kingdom especially Obatala , so just like Oduduwa children, Obatala children have their own kingdom, also others , which includes Benin, Oranmiyan was sent to Benin by then Oluife to settle kingship problems in Benin and it was difficult for him to do so before he left with anger,

Dr Oyinsan, please with all due respect, the Yoruba culture has so much been politicized for so long now that there are no longer any real historical cultural ties to the past in Yoruba lands. Oooni (It is not your by Orisha) fighting the Alaafin of Oyo; the Oooni and Oba of Lagos fighting and setting houses ablaze. You currently have up to 200 Obas everywhere in Yoruba land. You are correct, how can a chieftain from Oyo have any playing part in Lagos? Lagos was EKO and still is, created by the Benin. Politic has made Aree Kankanfo to having any say in Lagos? How about putting politic (current colonial constitution) aside and the old system return, the Benin will make sure he crawl from wherever he is to Benin recanting!

@Jada Lilly My brother, my brother, this is why the Fulani gave you the name Yariba. Please do not agree with me, go research where the name Yoruba comes from. How can you say Lagos the most minute area of Nigeria has many kingdoms? Sure you have more than 2000 kings in the Yoruba land, and is an aberration of kingdom and kingship, the reason we are talking now. Moreover, we have no problem with the Aworis, listen to them speak and you will find out they have some Benin intonation in their language. I do not want to hear about your Israel, Italy and etcetera. They all came about differently and incomparable to the Benin or others history, agree? Eko, Eko never forget that name and you need further research. You are a small boy of history and culture compared to any Benin.
