Good information here, thank you for your in-depth research. I remember reading a short biography of Jim Bowie's brother in which it was noted that he stated that to butcher an animal you need a sharp edge but to fight to the death two sharp edges were needed so he sharpened the the clip which made it easier to inflict a wound on an opponent (meaning he described it as after a defensive move all you need is to flick your wrist). I certainly don't know if he was the first to do so.

My understanding was that originally, the clip was sharpened for the backcut. As we evolved to hunting knives, the clip became ascetic. Thanks for watching.

I enjoyed your in depth information on Bowie blade knives and the evolution of the knives. There is a large library of books written on this subject. I believe the Bowie name came much later than when the knife first appeared. The clip blade design intends it to cut and cause injury while fighting. The curved clip point works as a hawkbill blade even if not sharpened. The point of the blade causes it to slash cut on a reverse stroke of the blade. If you sharpen the curved edge, it becomes quite useful for cutting limbs and branches from trees and brush. The blade is heavier and thicker than the cutting edge and makes a better chopping edge. Because the edge is thicker, it chops better because it gives more control and power to the blade swing. I know it works with a KA-BAR because I used mine doing it. It works similar to a Woodsman Pal or Brush Hook. However, the intended idea was using it on your opponent. 🤔👍

the definition of what is a bowie knife has always been disputed ever since the term appeared

Yeah, universally, though they were big knives. Thanks for your comments and watching.

Very nice explanation of the Bowie Knife, 🤔 To me any knife intended for defense or made with defense partly or mostly in mind no matter the size but the bigger the blade is the more furious. The Original Bowie Knife was for defense and protection first and foremost. ⚔️⌚⚔️

You're right. What surprises me is how light in hand they feel. A well crafted bowie was a formidable weapon. Thanks for watching 👀 🙂

..sword bayonet..?
@rasputinscastle7 ай бұрын
The sword bayonet was simply any long bayonet that could be used as a sword. Conversely a riflemans knife was called a knife, large but usually smaller than the bayonet sword. They were given to specialized groups who carried weapons with rifled bores. These rifles were shorter than a musket and had no fixed bayonet. Hence the need for a Riflemans knife.

@@rasputinscastle ..brown Bess nor charleville (and following 1795, 1816 patterns) didn't have fixed bayonets.... they were smoothbores... and it would be quite an achievement to get 3 shots in 10 seconds or so, 1 or 2 shots per minute, with emphasis on maneuver, is a bit more achievable

@@rasputinscastle the original 1842 "Mississippi " .54 rifle had no sword bayonet, nor provision for mounting a bayonet. The 1847, converted from round .54 to minie .58, had a sword bayonet...

Good history lesson again,by coincidence I was doing some repairs to a late 1800s sword cane yesterday .(as I understand a sword stick was used by Bowies adversary .one of my observations over the years is America has a tendency compared to the UK to Go Large ie the 59 Cadillac against a Jaguar or even Rolls Royce ,even to go large at a take away is very much a Mc Ds Burger king KFC over here .I love American style .Especially parking spaces at supermarkets .Lovely Knives again I look forward to your contributions every time I fire up my Chromebook .Have a good week sir.

Cane swords were popular in America as well as England 🇬🇧. Capt. Wright didn't like Jim Bowie. The two had had multiple conflicts over the years. When a fight broke out, the Capt saw his chance to get rid of Bowie. He shot Bowie in the hip. 6ft muscular man charged the Capt. Bowie was hit in the head and knocked to the ground with the Capt. Pistol. The Capt. Then stabed Bowie through the chest with a cane sword. It was then Bowie pulled his knife and disembowled the Capt. I've always loved a big blade.
