All this time my little mind never pieced together that the ride was in a separate building under the mansion. Silly me, guess the Disney magic worked.

I got a chance to go on Mystic Manor in Hong Kong during a Naval deployment, and it was fantastic! I still have a lot of nostalgia for the Haunted Mansions in WDW and Disneyland in CA, but I'd love if they additionally had Mystic Manor since I'm sure I won't have another opportunity to visit Hong Kong.

I guess you could say the Haunted Mansion was the first instance of an idea going into the Imagineering ‘filing cabinet’ and later being brought out in a different form (walkthrough to the doom buggies, Main Street to New Orleans Square, etc..)

I love the original Haunted Mansion, I think it's awesome and when I think of the Haunted Mansion, in my mind I see the one at Disneyland. But I have to say, as far as looks go, WDW has it beat. That large brick mansion just looks scary. I read on another site, that when Tokyo was built they went with the WDW style architecture as opposed to the Disneyland antebellum look, because the Imagineers felt it was more imposing and just looked more like what you think of as a typical haunted house.

RockenDokkenlover91 - The ride is in the building behind the Mansion. You descend in the elevator that way you walk through a tunnel under the railroad and into the show building where the ride is actually housed. Pause at 5:03 to see.

It's a common misconception that Rolly and Marc each had an idea for the ride and decided to each take half of it. The truth is that Rolly and Marc were the main designers of the attraction and both had a hand throughout the entire ride. This is explained in one of the Index chapters at the end of the book Boundless Realms by Foxx Nolte. I know the book was published in 2020, but I wanted to point this out anyway.

Although the one in WDW and Tokyo are impressive in its architecture they used more a force perspective. In the one in Disneyland is more on the human scale making it more impressive specially when they decorate it for the seasons
@TherealRNOwwfpooh4 жыл бұрын
Whilst the New Orleans Square Haunted Mansion was based on the Shipley-Lydecker House in Baltimore & the Liberty Square Haunted Mansion was inspired by the Harry-Packer Mansion in Pennsylvania, both American versions of the ride were also influenced by the Winchester Mystery House (you know, the supposed haunted house with staircases leading to nowhere & doorway chutes with supposed secret passages throughout). Tokyo's version of the Mansion, besides residing in Fantasyland, also retains the pre-2006 ride-through (meaning, no Constance Hatchaway Attic Bride update found in both stateside renditions [as in, it's still the melancholy Beating Heart Bride with screeching pop-up ghost groomsmen cruelly mocking her in Japan], nor the rematerialized Hatbox Ghost following his 2015 arrival at Disneyland) as well. Phantom Manor ignored Walt's rule of having pristine building exteriors largely for cultural reasons b/c of the vast array of multilingual guests (for whom English may not be their native language, seeing as the park is in the metropolitan tourist hub of Paris, France rather than the relatively unknown town of Paris in Texas, naturally), as well as the fact that the foreboding gothic architecture from Florida's iteration is what the local neighborhood European cemeteries actually look like, meanwhile the antebellum plantation style of the original wouldn't suit the Frontierland relocation of the attraction, not to mention it simply would not be scary enough to indicate the visual of a Haunted Mansion for the common European sensibilities, considering how even most of the other more light-hearted fairytale retellings Disney reimagined into sacchirine musicals (those based in the U.K. [like Peter Pan based on the book-turned-play by James Barrie, the madcap world of Alice in Wonderland & Through the Looking Glass by Lewis Carroll, Winnie-the-Pooh & its House at Pooh Corner continuation by A.A. Milne, & 101 Dalmatians by the source book's author just to name a few] notwithstanding) actually originated from the darker European folktales that served as morality stories to frighten delinquent kids into behaving properly from the likes of Hans Christian Anderson and, of course, rather appropriately for the discussion at hand, the Brothers GRIMM.
