Great video! I never noticed in recordings how much sound came from the strings behind the nut, and between the tail piece and the bridge until I got my first Jazzmaster, a custom 1957 model. I can really hear those strings chiming in your video. Thanks for posting!

Kudos for the little taste of Miles on the '59. My JM is a '66 with block inlays. Quite light-just over 7lbs-with the most comfortable Fender neck I've ever played. Has a rich, darkish sound. The "jazz" setting is great for clean single-note leads. I'm pretty sure Leo & co. switched to the "round lam" fretboard 'cuz they thought it was a better engineering solution to mating rosewood and maple. They were trying to cut down on separation.

What he didn't mention is Fender changed the vibrato spring length/action in 61-62 to match that of the newly released Jaguar. The original spring tension up to that point suits the Jazzmaster better and is very smooth.

The JM is my favourite Fender until I pick up my Tele, then that becomes my fave until I pickup my Strat, then... you know. I do have a very warm spot in my musical soul for the Jazzmaster, though. Even old ones are readily available and don't cost the earth. They sound great and do what no other electric guitar can do, that is, to sound exactly like a Jazzmaster.

I'm the owner of a 1974 JM Don't be fooled that JM is only a one trick pony. Not only is the JM played with surf or or Reverb vibrato. It rock's out balls to the wall's. Rock & Roll. R&B , jazz, I can speak to any other incarnates of the Jazzmaster. But the American built 1974 is my cup of Tea.

I built a Jazzmaster, not a kit but I did the body on a CNC machine. I bought a neck and cut the ebony fret board and installed the frets. Locking tuners and a metal pick guard like the 1959 Jazzmaster had. That crazy wiring and some off brand true Jazzmaster pickups. I bought the tremolo for it and the bridge is still a nightmare. I went through every stupid bridge and it was never right. I have a roller bridge on it now and that solved most of the problems. The action is an other weird thing about these guitars. I have it to a near acceptable low, I love these guitars but they are hard to love. I can't use it for a work or stage guitar just yet, I will because the out come of my efforts are well worth my efforts.

The piece of music you played on the '74 is quite lovely and sounds very Fender-ish played on that instrument. Playing jazz on the earlier model Jazzmasters, not nearly as appealing. Despite the Jazzmaster name, to my ear jazz sounds so much sweeter and jazzier when played on archtops and full-hollow jazzboxes - humbucking PUs not required. Although even the neck PU on a Tele can do jazz justice. Thank you.

Yeah - mother of pearl dots show up by 65, then later 65 gets the binding, and during 66 they moved to the blocks. Yours also has the witch hat knobs. A good eye can pick a jazzmaster within a year or two during that first decade. I've had a few over the years - bought and sold. I hung on to my early 65 - beat to hell, but best guitar I've ever played.

I had a Red Jazzmaster that I bought with money I earned on my Denver Post paper-route in 1969. I couldn't play anything on it, but back then there was no You Tube. I sold it in 1977 after I was discharged from the USMC. I often wondered how much it would be worth that I had it today. You play it like hot butter on sourdough bread, smooth and mellow.
