HISTORY OF THE FIFTH MILITARY COUP IN NIGERIA (How Buhari Overthrew Shagari)

President Shehu Shagari was elected for a second term as President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria but while he was still celebrating his victory and preparing for swearing-in, the military struck and removed him from power. Major General Muhammadu Buhari became the new Head of State and immdieately appointed Military Governors to run the affairs of the country with him. Shagari was arrested and detained so also was the Vice President and the State Governors. Other leading politicians were also arrested and detained. This video narrates the events that led to the coup, the coup itself and the events that characterized Major General Buhari's military rule. Buhari was later overthrown by Ibrahim Babangida and detained in solitary area of Benin City for three years before he was later released. Nigerians were received into believing that Buhari was a Nigerian patriot,disciplined,uncorrupt and the ironman of the Buhari-Idiagbon brief regime of ,1984.And we stupidly voted him into power in 2015.The true patriot and strong man of that regime was Brigadier-General Tinder Idiagbon.Late Idiagbon was a no-no sense disciplined officer with zero tolerance for corruption.A true change agent with charisma and intergrity that could have changed Nigeria for the better.Buhari benefited from Tinder Idiagbon's merits to win the elections because Nigerians failed to recognise these facts.

Just wondering how Buhari was immediately arrested after the coup when he was said to be in Saudi Arabia at the time, even though he insisted on returning to the country against the advice of his colleagues. He might have been arrested but definitely, not immediately after the coup.

Buhari was in the country. Only Idiagbon was outside the country (he was in Saudi Arabia where he went for the hajj). It was Idaigbon who wanted to return to the country immediately when he received the news of the overthrow of their regime. He was however advised not to return. The King of Saudi at the time called for him and made him his guest for several days. He joined in advising Idiagbon that it was unsafe for him to return to Nigeria at the time. You can confirm these from President Buhari's media chats in 2018 and 2019 where he described Idiagbon as a man of great loyalty who wanted to return from Saudi Arabia and be with him in Nigeria upon hearing about the coup: Vanguard Newspaper of 22 Oct., 2018 Daily Post of 21 Jan., 2019 Moreover, the target of every military is the man at the helm. Once he is captured the coup is about 80 percent successful. No coup planners will allow the man at the helm to be that free, at least not when the coup has just been staged. Buhari was arrested immediately, sir.
