As a 28yr Army leg infantry guy, I had a lot of worn out 1911s, then the same for the M9. The first gun I got after retiring? A G19. It has been fine. It does work. I do appreciate the ammo count. Glocks are loved, hated, and once in a while someone is indifferent. Now, I still plink with my personal 1911s. Love that gun.

My Dad carried a 1911 in Vietnam, I carried one in a 25th Recondo platoon, then as an MP and instructor and armorer. When I got out and was a gun dealer for a while, I got a Gen 1 G17 right after Miami PD did their famous torture tests and loved it, but felt I was cheating on my Officers .45. My wife was actually mad when I sold it 10 years later. I Bought a G19 gen2 when they first came out, and my Dad immediately kiped it. I let him keep it and he wore the finish off it, then had my uncle (a GA State Police armorer) carried in to Glock and had them refurb it. A couple years ago after my parents were killed by a drunk driver I found the G19 in his "special spot" and it has become my usual EDC. I still don't like the look, but can't argue with the tight groups that always find their way out of the muzzle...Thanks for the info and your service Brother, enjoy the holidays with the loved ones.

When I was in the Army as a combat medic, we carried the 1911, then transitioned to the M9. Both good weapons but the biggest issue was lack of proper maintenance. I never saw a M9 get new springs (recoil, or trigger), while the 1911’s were just worn out.

I would’t consider myself a Glock fanboy, however, I was issued the Glock 19, and fell in love with it from the word go. It was much more ergonomically correct and comfortable for me than the M9. Its sites were spot on, and it just felt like an extension of my arm. I now EDC the Glock 19 in the civilian world, and feel well equipped.

Good video. My unit switched to G19 around 2015. I actually preferred the medium-compact size since pistol was secondary weapon. G19 was big enough to shoot well enough but small enough to be out of the way in vehicles and tight spaces

I'm a retired police officer and carried a 40 caliber Glock for many years and I love it. I have 1911's, Beretta's and I like them but they are heavy period. But like you I don't like red dots on a pistol, I am much faster on target with regular sights like you said out to 25yds on a man sized target. Glocks are not pretty or nostalgic but they are very dependable in just about any environment and are very light weight. Great video, I just found your videos and will be checking out the rest.

Thats why I like Glock is they’re as bland as a coffee thermos and no sentimentality just want it to work. The sentimental stuff is a good rifle or sxs shotgun or good fly rod. Im thankful Glock got rid of the pigtail spring design on the slide release though because I personally have buggered that up more often then not if having to fix trigger issue or something, maybe i’m doing something wrong even though I tug on it and feel for trigger pin to click in, I still have a problem with the slide release locking alide back prematurely on a gen 3 that ive worked on. Thankfully gen 5 has a new coil spring design for slide release/slide lock that doesn’t use that stupid pigtail spring riding under upper pin!

I love hearing stories about the Army acquisition process. I had a Tier One buddy once tell me “no mater how cool you are, you’re still in the Army.” I shot 1911s growing up, shot an M9 in the Army, and a P226 as a police officer. All have about the same grip angle. I’ve tried glocks a few times and every time the grip angle/sight picture would be off. At this point I stick to what I know. My P226 is my fav handgun hands down.

The "Glock hate" is deeply ingrained in those who have misconceptions and aesthetic requirements. Glock pistols have become the benchmark against which all other manufacturers are being measured. Glock has revolutionized the way pistols are built. Many manufacturers sell pistols that look and feel like a Glock but when it comes to reliability, combat worthiness and durability under extreme conditions, there is only one that makes the decisive difference...It's the Glock!

Interestingly, for those missions requiring concealed carry, we were issued the G26 Gen 3. In fact, when I was sent away for PMT for that specific mission set (just a handful of us), that's when I first really used the G26 (I know, I know, "case of beer") and we trained heavily on it. To this day, well over 15 years later, and I still carry a G26 for concealed carry. I did see some of the fellas run G19s in the regular teams after around 2010 or so.

Perfection is a stretch. It does not "need" upgrades and can effectively be ran stock but really shines with upgrades. An iron sight upgrade to steel sights however is almost a necessity so that one handed manipulation can be done without breaking the sights. I personally like the Glock 45, and add the tyrant designs extended mag release. It is only extended enough just to ensure not having to break your grip to reload and has an aggressive Chevron texture and has chamfered edges on the catch so the aluminum doesn't Marr the mags. I also add overwatch OG DAT trigger and magwell. I also feel a light is a must have, I prefer either the streamlight TLR1-HL or surefire x300. None of these are 100% necessary, but make it way better. reliability is top notch and have no qualms trusting my life or the lives of my family with it. Also extremely easy to diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair armorer level work with spare parts being cheap and easily accessible to keep on hand. Fantastic platform

I would love to give the G19 another try some point. When I was still in the USMC back in the early '90s, I bought a then new Gen 2 from the base MCX. Unfortunately, it was a complete lemon. Couldn't go through one box of 50ct military ball without 2-3 stoppages. After 3 trips back to the factory, I finally gave up on it and traded it in for something else. Was not an ammo or mag issue as I had no problems with my friend's G19 which he bought at about the same time and from the same MCX. On top of that, I also bought a G23 at about the same time and that gun was absolutely reliable. Just the luck of the draw I guess.

Shoots great, feels good in the hand, and the stock extended mag and slide release are perfect for her. I like it so much I just picked up my Glock 17 Gen3 yesterday - TLR-7A, Vickers extended mag and slide releases, and Magpul mag well are all on the way. Factory triggers will do just fine for us at least until we get several hundred rounds through each. Red dots are a consideration with aging eyes, but want to see how far we can go with iron sights. Great video with an interesting history lesson from someone that lived through it and experienced it firsthand. As a federal contracting professional I have to take issue with the whole strategy of writing the requirement to fit a specific product. The requirement is the requirement and really shouldn’t be altered or tailored to force a sole source acquisition. It isn’t fair to the market or the taxpayer. That said, the Glock 19 has built a strong reputation and I will probably get one soon. Thank you for the history lesson and for your service.

I am wondering why that flew when a compact pistol (SIG M11) was already in the system. They really hated that DA/SA transition on 1st to 2nd shot? SOCOM did save some money by getting Glocks transferred to them from a DHS contract.

It took me awhile to warm up to the Glock, but I ultimately opted for a Gen 2 model 32. Its the exact same size as the G-19 but .357 Sig. Love it, but to be fair I reload. I am ok with losing 2 rounds capacity for the added power, and Ive found i can load reduced power rounds with 125gr bullets and get 1280-1290 fps with enough slide velocity to run, or go full power and push them +1400 fps. This versatility is very cool, and the G-32 runs fine with 15rnd .40 S&W mags with a follower swap out. The .357 Sig is an under appreciated cartridge.

Great to see that buraucracy in procurement is not the sole purview of the Canadian Army. The hoops we have to jump thorugh to get stuff is amazing. Only when I went to the Canadian Rangers did it change for the better (and I mean MUCH better), because no one knew what thehell we did so they just authorized things to make us go away (which I could live with!). I have a Glock 19 as a personal firearm and it is a joy to shoot. matches well with my Ruger PC carbine, too! At the end of the day, it is a secondary weapon. If I have to fight with a pistol, something has gone wrong (either mildly or seriously). The rifle/carbine will always be the primary weapon.

Remember getting a new G19, a certain team sarge would toy with me on the range with his M9. I ended up sticking with the M9. The accuracy department was much better but you suffer from reliability. Pros and cons. That M17/m18 though? Mmm pretty nice I will say. I would like to see ODA teams get 19X’s in the future, send them to crane to get milled or have glock sell the Army the 19X milled for a RMR

Great summary of the Glock in SF. I recall when the M1911A1 was replaced by the M9 Beretta in the USMC in 1984. Although the Beretta is a superior handgun, the nostalgia of the 1911 was a point of contention. Some of the M1911 pistols had very low serial numbers and were collector’s items. The M1911’s would literally fall apart on the firing line during FAM or qualification. Front sights and slide releases were typically rattled out during firing. MARSOC still retained the M1911, but they were specially built in Quantico for Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) deployments for special units. The M9 was a bit large for my hand, but I was still able to qualify expert. The M9 was also much safer to handle than the M1911. I have a SiG P220 and a Glock 21 & 36, and I think the Glock would be the “go the the battlefield” choice.

If your only experience was a leg unit 1911, you probably never wanted to touch another. I have several nice 1911 pistols. They are fun to shoot and work outstandingly. I carry a G19 for daily carry. It works every time, it is accurate, and I have a lot of time with that gun. They are inexpensive. They are good tools. Yes, there ARE aftermarket triggers that are pretty darn good. I had one of the first Gen 5 19's in my region & they are fine but I wouldn't buy another because it doesn't do anything for me that a Gen 3 can't. I also have a 17M which was the precursor to the Gen 5's. A Gen 3 is just as reliable as any other gen. Gen 2 & Gen 3 are also the Glocks that really built Glock's reputation. Gen4 & 5 were really just a way for Glock to appeal to customers who want something new.

There were several other thing that also helped in the procurement of the original Glocks. One of the things was that a well respected 18B retired, went to work for Glock USA in military sales, and with his contacts and knowledge of the need within the force was able to help write the Mission Needs Statement. From USASOC on down we were fighting the Army and at one point our own top General to replace our aging and over used M9s (which were constantly breaking locking blocks and slides). Unfortunately USASOC was being run early on during time time by an aviator who was used to all pilots being equipped exactly alike, and couldn't understand some of the varied needs of the ground elements under his command. It was difficult to get rid of that way of thinking even after his departure, and that played a part in stopping/slowing future procurement of those Glock systems.
