I inherited an original in the 64xxx range and we used to shoot it back in the 1970’s. My great uncle taught me how to load it and he learned from my great grandfather, who was born in 1864 and carried it in the late 1800’s prior to switching to a Colt SAA. The gun was not left on half cock to ram the ball because it naturally indexes and locks under the rammer. Half cock was only used to cap the nipples. I’m not sure if all of had it, but our revolver also had gain twist rifling, which started the ball straight into the barrel then spun it more quickly as it exited. We could easily keep all shots on a gallon Clorox bottle at 50 yards so it would have been a man killer at least to 75 and maybe even 100 yds., although the trajectory was a couple feet.

And one you did not mention, because it came out in the early 80's, is the Lyman 1860 colt Army. I got mine as a Christmas gift, I think in 1981ish, as a kit. And I still have it today. I think of all the cap and ball revolvers I've ever seen, it is the prettiest, with its rounded lines. Mine has the belted cylinder. I uses 25 grains of 3F and a .451 caliber round ball, oh, and when they came out, a over powder wad. For conical, Buffalo Bullets, I'd up to 30 grains of 3F an over powder wad and the Buffalo Bullet conical, and I used it as a back up gun when hunting. She's still a good shootin gun. Oh, and its a four screw, cut for a shoulder stock.

Very informative video. I found the issue about powder flasks and bullet molds continuing to be provided by Colt with every one of these pistols sold to the government during the Civil War interesting. My understanding is that paper cartridges, not loose powder and ball, were by far the common load during the war and afterwards, so obviously not much need for every soldier, sailor or civilian who had an 1860 Army pistol to have and depend upon these items. It would not surprise me if Samuel Colt had financial interest in the contractors who furnished paper cartridges, thus making money both ways. Also, it is very strange to me that replica pistols were not designed with loading ports large enough to accommodate paper cartridges with conical bullets, especially given the close association that the founder of Cimmaron Arms has had with Uberti for decades now.
@garrettfromsmokeinthewoods3 жыл бұрын
Very much agree. He was making quite a killing on ammo. As far as the cimmoron colt goes it was better then the pietta but not nearly as easy as the original
@davidaldorfer22243 жыл бұрын
@@garrettfromsmokeinthewoods A number of folks - duelist1954 comes to mind - have videos showing how they "smooth" the actions of newly unboxed replica revolvers. The video doesn't say whether this was done to the Pietta and/or Uberti pistols - timewise, I appreciate that you can include only so much detail, so please don't take this as a criticism. Whether a good gunsmith might have done similar work on the original way back in the day is unknowable now, of course. I raise the point only because I think it would be interesting to see how much, if any, this might close the "smoothness" gaps between the original and the replicas used in the video, and to know how the original used in this video compares to other original cap and ball Colts you've had the privilege to handle, whether 1860 Army or other models. Mike B. makes the point that if manufacturers did this before shipping out any product, it would make them too costly for many folks who buy and enjoy them now, which I think is realistic assessment. Keep up the good work!

An excellent video, thank you, it was fascinating stuff, and I learned a lot of things I didn't know before. But if you're doing historical shooting, especially with an original, you really need to be making combustible cartridges with conical bullets. I'm sure you know this, but round balls were not used for paper cartridges. I heartily recommend Eras Gone bullet molds; probably the Johnston and Dow is the best match for your piece, but I really like the Kerr bullet, and the South used a lot of them (which should make a rebel like you happy). It fits better in reproduction revolvers, and is slightly heavier than the J&D. The results you got with your Pietta being worse than the Uberti are surprising. My experience is that the Ubertis have better fit and finish, but the Piettas are closer in specs to the originals (check out Mark Hubbs' video comparing various Remington repros to an original) and have better springs, but, to be fair, there's a lot of inconsistency in all the reproductions so maybe I've just been lucky.
@garrettfromsmokeinthewoods3 жыл бұрын
Thank you. I do agree we need 44 mold. we do shoot conicals in 36 how ever when we went to mark hubs for a 44 mold about a year and a half ago he was sold out and has been ever since. We will do some 44 conical as soon as mold becomes available
@3ducs3 жыл бұрын
Duelist1954 has several videos on the 1860 Army, both Pietta and Uberti as I recall. He covers modifying the Pietta so that conical bullets can be used, the Ubertis don't need modification to clear the conical bullets.
@Schlachtschule3 жыл бұрын
@@3ducs Actually, if you look at Mike's videos, you can see he had to modify *both* his Pietta and Ubertis to make them accept J&D conical bullets, so yes, both need to be modified (look at *all* his videos). The Uberti rammer doesn't need to be modified, whereas the Pietta does, but *both* need to be modified in the loading port area to accept them. Some revolvers will handle the Kerr bullets without modification (which is the reason Mark Hubbs developed his recreation of the Kerr mold), but I know of none that will take the J&Ds without some.

yes we are going to get to the single action army we have started filming episode 9 that will cover the pocket police. as for the left handed thing that goes clear back to the cap and balls with the trigger being set to left hand side of the frame. the only reason it is like that is because the hand has to be on the left side of the cylinder to rotate the cylinder clock wise. although others have centered the trigger it is way simpler to just set the whole action slightly to the left in the frame.

Excellent show man. But you really got to lower the volume of the music. It distracts from your message. Classic YT video mistake is to use TOO much music and make it too loud. Use it for the first 30 seconds of your talk, and fade it out for the rest. Sometimes more is just too much.

Great video series. I am a dummy when it comes to these old 1860 revolvers, but I have a question. How come you or anyone else doesn't test the Colt Signature Series of 1860 army replicas with the Pietta or Uberti. I have all three and it isn't even close the Colt quality has over the other two. Yes they cost three times as much but it's worth it to me. And yes I know Uberti has ties to the Colt reproduction, but I don't see it. I know this was not the point of this video, just thought I would ask a expert.

i have run them and they tend to be hit and miss with the signature series. the good ones are great the bad ones are terrible. i have filmed the second gen black box walker and it was great. i will do a comparison video this summer at some point. thanks for watching

Seems like a great video but unfortunately for myself I can't listen to that repetitive beat the entire time with my misophonia.. If the music was maybe lower or came and went or something like no music I would have definitely watched the entire video. Sick collection though!

Fantastic video. I watched the whole thing. It makes me sad to think of the war of Northern aggression. They were willing to kill Americans for political reasons. It makes me wonder if all the lockdowns and restrictions we are going through now are really in our best interest.

I wonder if you're teachers, starting in kindergarten and moving up to college, grad school, etc., played music while they were lecturing. I had to turn your lecture off, because of the music... which was also loud. It's truly distracting... I was trying to listen to what you were saying but had to give up. Or perhaps you were playing it for yourself... since you already know the material If so, perhaps you'd enjoy wearing ear buds. I stayed on as long as I could but it was just too distracting. Or maybe all your teachers did play music while they were talking... through your school years... Duelist1954 has a good 40 minutes video... I think I'll listen to that one again.
