I had the 93 ZX7. And to this day it's my favorite toy of all time. The day I rolled out of the dealer on that thing was one of the most memorable moments of my life.

I found a basket case, but JUST running 95 ZX7 in Brazil back in 2010. What a beatiful bike and worth the 5-6 years last nut and bolt rebuild. It's very special to me and is without doubt my favourite TOY of all time.

Early 90’s ZX7R is what started my lifelong love affair with sportbikes. I remember the first time I saw one, the air tubes through the tank were the coolest thing in the world to me at the time.

9:20 Ah the full green with the purple wheels and purple subframe fairings is simply, in my opinion, the best color scheme kawasaki ever made. I would really love to one day contact some fairing manufacturers to have a custom fairing kit done for one of their modern bike.

One of my biggest regrets is not buying one of these new on the showroom floor. IMO this is one of the most beautiful bikes of all time, up there with the Ducati 916.

Yeah the pre RAM intake models were gorgoues. Once they added those giant holes on the sides I no longer felt they looks very nice. Clearly just a "stick on" solution from Kawi.

I have both, giving the 916 only a slight edge and not from all angles. The 7r was never knocked for its looks, only its power to weight.

I reckon it's MORE beautiful. The ZXR has a 'presence' that's hard to define. It looks like it means business. An aggressive stance that the 916 lacks. The 916 is a swoopy, elegant design. The ZXR is a solid, robust work horse, not a show pony. Up for a bar fight, and a high speed car chase....Not a manicure and a latte.

I agree. The L2 with the single ram air is actually the best of the bunch for me. That lack of symmetry looks so purposeful to me and gives it something special. Gorgeous machines.

On the race track it was great, but on the streets it definitely lagged behind the competition. But I don't fault kawi for that. The ZX7R was a fraction of the price as the competition. But there's a reason why there's thousands on the road even today for cheap money vs something insanely hard to find like the RC30 or OW01.

I agree this bike was a monster one of my favorite bikes...my friends had some of those zx7 an they ran with everything the walked 600 kept up with 900 and 1000 more than enough power its a legendary bike period

@@HeroRR i may be partial as i have owned one in the past however with a sprocket change and some carb work it would hang with the litre bikes of the day until about 130mph. def a heavy bike but once you got it into a turn it went exactly where you wanted and was almost impossible to upset with a mid corner bump. I actually preferred its handling to my next bike which was an RC51

I had an 89 zxr750 with a J2 motor, it pulled like crazy, and as I'm lightweight, took the fairing off, and could burn off 1100 gsxr with a chubby rider, no problem, these motors really pull strongly when wound up.

I'm 52. I'll never forget the introduction of the Interceptor, Ninja and Hurricane to the states in the mid to late 80s. Pretty big deal and gamechanger to us up and coming street riders after growing up around our dad's or uncles CB750's and the likes. Anyone local that bought an 85 Ninja or an 87 Hurricane was pretty much the shit in town as there were very few in the beginning that could afford one. They were mind blowing aesthetically speaking compared to motorcycles that we only were familiar with before their arrival to the states. In 1989 at 19 I saved up for over 3 months to buy a second hand Hurricane 600. That is when this small town dude ( I ) found his individuality among most other kids in town that spent their money on Kickers and Zeus amps ect. In 94 I made my very first brand new purchase, the CBR 900RR in Black, yellow and purple. To this day, although far gone from me, it still remains one of my most proudest moments and forever will be my most favorite Superbike to have ever owned. The bike was quiet simply..."Motorcycle Supremacy" in every way of the term with it's rival being the ZX 9R, and the ZX11 being the Mac Daddy to fear for any of us power wise but a decent rider could easily make up that difference. By that time we saw mostly GSXR 750's with an occasional 11 showing face, and then of course the 7R. FZR's were kinda rare as due to most going with the Suzuki or Kaw, but always respected in their own right. The one bike I've never owned and regret not obtaining was the ZX7R. Even today, admittedly, they are one of the most beautiful looking bikes to have ever graced the planet. NO bike today, regardless of the technological advances mechanical wise and weight reduction wise, holds a candle to the "fat" Superbikes from the mid 80s to the mid/late 90s. I'm very proud to be an OG and to have watched it all unfold and to have been a part of it as a young man trying to find his way in the world. These old bikes, looks wise, with these 7's being a prime example, simply are - Poetry...in...motion!

The price competition for this bike was the GSXR750 and YZF750. Not the RC30 and R7 0w-02. Honda didn't even sell the RC30 after 1990, and they had the RC45 for 94' and 95'. The SRAD, 916 line and later the RC51 were superior public offerings that ended the reign of the ZX7 series. The move to 1000cc in world superbike was the final nail in the coffin. These bikes are just as well built as any of the similarly priced bikes from the time. Corrosion is all about the owner's care or neglect. Excess suspension wear was blown out fork seals from dropping wheelies hard and the resulting steering stem bearing damage.

Hi Hero, great video however, as an Australian Superbike Racer during the 90’s it’s actually crystal clear why the 750 from Kawasaki stopped. As the original WSB format was 750 cc 4 cylinder bikes from the top 4 in Japan and the 916 from Ducati. When the WSB moved to litre bikes it was basically on Suzuki who kept and still do make a 750. In the early 90’s I was racing in the Australian 250 production series, the year that Anthony Gobert won it. The next year he got a wild card entry on one of these at Phillip Island where he won both races in his first attempt against the best racers from around the globe. The rest is history and sadly for the “Go Show” it had its up and downs.

@@londonroulette I nearly purchased his Australian come back race bike used in 2005 as in the right hands was capable of low 1.35 minutes around Phillip Island with over $400k spent on it.

@@jerodwolford2743 600’s are a dying bread so I’m not sure what you’re meaning. Same story unfortunately for the 750’s. As both once were the bikes you watched on Raceday and purchased on Monday. It all comes down emissions regulations. Hence why twins are becoming more mainstream. As each cylinder, no matter what is done to the engine all produce emissions. Having the displacement also haves the uncontrollable amount of emissions.

Before the ZX-7 was released in 1989, back in 1987 (or was it 1988) at the Sanair race track in Ste-Pie (Québec), i saw young man racing with a Kawasaki Ninja 750R against racers with Honda RC30, Suzuki GSXR750 and Yamaha FZR750R bikes... His parents were behind me in the stands cheering him on. He showed talent and perseverance even though his bike was outclassed by the other bikes. He went on to become the racer with the most wins in the 600cc class in AMA's history. At the time i had no idea i was witnessing the humble beginnings of a great racer, Miguel Duhamel. 🇨🇦🏍️👍

I had a 1996 P1 ZX7R (in green of course), bought new LOVED IT! Was heavier than the competition but the extra weight meant it stuck to the road and handled like it was on rails (as they say and best front end).

Another great video bro. I mentioned in a previous comment that the ‘96 ZX-6R my very first bike, but the 96 ZX-7R almost was haha. Your videos bring back a true sense of nostalgia for me and I very much appreciate them. One thing you should have mentioned in my opinion though, is how the 1996 GSX-R750 essentially rewrote the 750 class when it reappeared. I followed Doug Chandler and his racing a lot back then among others on the ZX-7RR, and one thing many Kaw racers had to deal with was the revamped, super light, and powerful GSX-R750. Back then in the street scene that SRAD even dominated CBR 900s, and gave problems to some liter bikes. The GSX-R750 was also a part of the ZX-7R’s demise. Surely, it was not the only factor, because you were correct that Kawasaki chose to focus on the ZX-10R and 6R. They accurately read the change in the market and focused on those two and decided to let Suzuki have the 3/4 liter crown. I do wish they continued to fight and upgrade the 7R, because that 7R felt like a tank compared to the Gixxer 750. I rode both at length. Great video though. Just thought I’d offer some personal input. Keep up the great work! If you find some time look up the Motorcyclist March 1996 issue. I actually still have that magazine lol.

I had a 1993 ZXR750 L1 as my first big capacity bike many moons ago here in Australia. Loved all of it except the extreme riding position at the time. The stability and the feel from the front end were awesome

Thank you Hero.....I had a 2007 ZX7R. I traded in a Honda F2 sport bike which was so good it was kinda boring if I'm honest. The ZX7 was anything but boring. Instead of smoothing out the creases, this bike translated every pebble and gave me a connection with the road I'd not ever experienced. It was a thrill to ride and a joy to remember it. Thank you for featuring a great bike from our collective motorcycle past.

Great video! I have a 99 ZX-7R and a 2000 RC51, two very different bikes. The 7R i bought almost just for the looks, i love the twin gaping intakes. Also i have hours of watching WSBK from the late 90s and early 2000s where Mr.Yanagawa was making that green machine look good on the track, love the racing pedigree. It was beaten by the SRAD 750 from new, both in weight and power, but the 7R out sold it every year, probably because of looks alone ;)

I always loved the 93 ZX7. Their biggest competitor was the GSX-R 750, and competition was fierce. About the same price and very similar stats if I remember correctly, but the Ninja seemed to be rarer, which I thought was cooler. So much love for the rocket bikes between 89-93 from me.

I think it's number of Superbike and SuperSport championships speak for themselves. I bought a new 1990 ZX-7 and a 1991 ZX-7R, and loved them both. I bought the last available 1991 ZX-7R in the country.

I had a 96 ZX7R and loved it! Please do a video on the Yamaha YZF 750 I had one of them to and out of evey sport bikes I've ever had it was by far the most comfortable and I could wheelie that bike for as many miles as I wanted to.

Great video but you did sell the 7R short when you said it had not outstanding quality. If you have ever road one (on a track) even with its weigh NOTHING handles like a 7R when flogged. It makes anybody feel like a hero even with all the weight. Maybe down to the fact it doesn’t have a lot of HP but all in all it is hailed as one of the the best front ends ever! Giving full confidence to its rider.

I own the little brother of this bike. The ZXR-400. Looks exactly like this one but with a 400cc 4cil. And, sadly, not the dual cirkle headlights. It's completely stock. Purely in love with it❤

I've got a 750 H2 stored away for a couple of years now, bought it for 400€:s and put some time and effort in it, now it's about 3000€:s worth, hopefully it'll rise alot more over the years!

It's a good history lesson. Thanks. I actually owned Muzzy's one and only street model 1993 ZX7M. They had made it with all the same off-the-shelf race parts for their GP bikes, changed the tank to a race tank, put the 41mm flat-side carbs that went into the later model ZX7R's, and put the GP air intake. It was faster that a ZX14, which I bought the year they came out in 2006, and I owned both bikes at the same time. The unloaded it off a truck at Laguna Seca and did a few laps before a wealthy collector made them an offer they could not refuse. He had it sitting in his shop in Tucson for years when I bought it off of him with only 450 miles on the clock. The true Holy Grail of ZX7's. I had to sell it because the Arizona DPS wanted it badly, and Arpayo was giving people 30 days wearing pink women's panties for doing what I did, outrun the fuzz. I wish I'd have kept it. Could sell it for $30k right now. The guy I sold it to shipped it to New Zealand, so don't go looking for it or any pictures of it.

I grew up in the hay day of 90's SBK and MotoGP, this bike was always overshadowed by the Ducati and Honda title fight but Akira Yanagawa's no4 green ZX7RR was just so damn cool even if he never really did anything worth while.

I hope that Kawasaki will return to making "Key" parts to keep these ZX7's on the road for years to come. The build quality was really excellent and Engines, chassis, forks wheels and swingarms will all take loads of abuse but return to as new with the fitting of new bearings etc. Problem areas are fuel lines, swingarm bushes, carb parts, cooling system hoses and connections, and the rather fragile water and oil pump drive assembly/assemblies.,

I had the pleasure of owning the 1st incarnation ZXR750 H1 here in the UK way back in the early 90's, one of the coolest styled bikes of the 80's/90's, they were winning everything race wise at the time, Scott Russel ruled the roost for a good while ... the H1 handled harshly, rear suspension linkage was track focused, not much use on the rd, nearly high sided on a few occasions exiting roundabouts hard on the gas.

As a teenager in the 1980's, the H1 turned my head from super cars to Sport bikes, and a realistic aspiration that could be obtained. I never did get that H1, but I did get my hands on a totalled 1992 K series bike that with my dad we rebuilt from the frame up, and got me into roadracing. I eventually sold the race bike, I did finally buy a 2001 P series which I will not part with. While technology really has moved well past the 7R, There are to this day few motorcycles that are so eye catching as the 91-92 bikes and the '96-'03 models and that is why they sold well past their expiry date after the 900cc took the street market. I fully agree after the liter bikes took over the superbike scene, the 750cc bikes became irrelevant alongside the 636.

I'm hearing you, fella. Being from 1970 but always a bike freak, got the 1989 h1 with a later j2 motor in 1997, it was totally ace, took the fairing off after getting hit by a car and it went like a rocket. Pulled great! It could beat a gsxr 1100 in a drag race, I'm very light and rev like a madman, so up against a heavier rider who's possibly not as experienced, they're toast, easily. They were way ahead of their time with this price range engineering. Now I'm owning a 95 gsxr750 streetfighter, the last of the old skool monsters, and will keep that beauty forever. There will never, ever be a bike era like this ever again. 80s-90s is the ultimate era. They're not irrelevant, not even today. No way! Stay classy, my man!

I have only two horses in my stable now: '06 YZFR1 and a new Low Rider S that I bought just a few days ago. I can't wait to ride it but rain continues. Maybe tomorrow. The '93 ZX7 was a very awesome bike and I wish I had one of those but there is only so much money to be spent. No doubt I'll need to sink $10K into the Low rider to make it "mine" before all is said and done. In NH, there has been nothing but rain and more rain. Arrrgggg!

I have a 1994 L2, it's awesome. Great video although not entirely accurate. Close though. All J models worldwide where restricted. Different cams, pistons, and single valve springs compared to the k model. The K L M all had the same parts though. Also don't forget muzzy was winning on the bikes for a decade. They are dripping in race wins and some titles

I bought the last available all red one (M model) with black wheels available in Texas back in the day. I sold it when our first child showed up. I wish I had it back badly. This would have been sometime before the year 2000.

Superbikes of the day were based off the 750's of the time and the weight on the street version was always talked about but the racebikes min. weight of 365 lbs. was never an issue for the Green team. The Ducati's had to add ballast to get them to the min weight in race trim. I rode a 91 quite a bit and loved the handling and stability of the ZX7 over the heavy Gsxr and unobtanium Hondas and Yamahas of that era. I am now looking to find a 96-03 7 to fix up and ride.

The 1991 model of the Kawasaki ZXR750 cost $20,550 in Sweden. The following year I paid $10,300 for the same motorcycle, new. Really fun to drive and it was fantastically beautiful!

Disco'ing the 7R probably helped streamline Kawasaki's logistics support & manufacturing of the 6R & 10R, not jusy funneling customers to them.

Ive always liked the zx7s. In 03 when i was 18 trying to get my first bike, i was standing in a kawi dealership gawking at an orange zx7r. Couldnt get financed. I ended up buying a 92 vfr, which i miss dearly. By 2006 i was shop foreman for a motorcycle performance shop, and one day a customer came in on a k model 92 zx7r (500 total, 142 in the states)... and he was talking about selling it... for 1000 bucks 😳 i had already talked with him about how much i loved these bikes and knew about them so naturally i was interested... but alas he just couldnt bring himself to sell it..even after begging and pleading with him. I still to this day wonder where that bike is.... 😢

Always loved the ZX7. But, I think it's interesting that Kawasaki's competition, Honda and Yamaha are mentioned several times but, the ZX7's major competition, the GSXR, is never mentioned. Sorta diminishes the credibility of the video.

I lusted over that first year ZX7 but I couldn't afford it, back in 1989 there were few jobs unlike these days and minimum wage was $3.35 an hour😜

Great video. Hero. I don’t think the zx7 and Zx7r were cheaper built. them and the gsxr750 were mass produced and passed through lots of hands and a lot got shagged out.

Great article, but the ZX7 was built extremely well, you could improve on it ( such as filing engine casting edges, missed at the factory) but it stands a hell of an amount of abuse and is still rebuildable by just changing out bearings etc, hardly what I would call poor build quality. I personally have never found bearing so "shagged" but with all the housings still 100% intact during my 1995 L3 total rebuild project.

Seems like other guys mentioned it already but I'll reiterate that the GSX-R750 killed this thing being damn near 100lbs lighter AND more powerful. Also, the demise of the 750 class in favor of 1000s didn't help.

I have a J Zx7R and i can say its just differnet from the others just a good bike i ride a Z750 and its much softer and better in smooth cornering and in general rideing but the zx7r is just good

Surely the Fireblade and later, the R1 and R6 had a lot to do with the demise of this really cool bike. The aforementioned changed the Superbike landscape. Bikes could no longer be heavy and low on power. Plus they needed to handle very well.

If they do, it will probably be a parallel twin fart fluffer nothing like the original. They got it right once, which is why I’ve kept mine.

3:46 & 5:55 here's a fun fact about that 100-105hp figure : here in france, a law restricted HP to 100hp with a 5% technical margin since 1985, and Kawasaki though that rest of Europe would follow suit, so everyone got the same (in japan they had a 750cc limit at the time, also a 45hp (250cc) & 60hp (400cc) limit, so it's understandable that they though so). Thankfully (for others coutries), not many followed france's dumb idea (and now this limit is lifted, IF your bike has ABS, otherwise get f*cked you're stuck at 100hp)

That AI photo enhancer you're using is screwing around with the pictures in a distracting way. Like whats with that weird clone stamping on the back wheel at 5:59? THe picture of carbs at 6:56 made my eyes hurt. haha I'm sure hi-res photos are harder to get but it is 100% worth it.

It’s a shame what happened to the 750s. They kept raising the power in WSBK until the 750s became unaffordable. Then they replaced them with 1000s that rather quickly became MotoGP-lite bikes. Unfortunately, modern Superbikes are outrunning the street and many tracks, and they have presided over the steady decline of SBK racing and sales. An accessible bike and SBK racing formula is exactly what the world needs right now.

750 was big when 500 was big and 1000. Once 600s came in lighter and just a few less hp 750s died

I've owned a lot of bikes....Some, really special, like a couple of R1's, a 1098S, VF1000R, RG500, KR1S. Some, not so special. Sorry, GPz750...you were a dog. Of all the bikes, which are way too may to list, the ZXR750 L3 stands out as the most beautiful bike i've ever owned or ridden. The handling, the power delivery, the braking, the feel.....It wasn't the most powerful, or the most beautiful (1098S wins that prize), amongst the the others, but it was the king of all. I'd gladly swap my original '98 R1, sitting in the shed, for a dead ZXR750, any day. (My sob story) One Christmas, back in around 2012, we had no money.....not even enough to have Christmas dinner, or buy the kids any presents. I sold my beloved ZXR to the first person who offered to buy it. Sometimes, you have little choice, but to do what you need to, to bring happiness to the ones you love. Things are better, these days, but I still miss the old girl.

I dont think the problem was the RC30 or the FZ. Everyone who has ever ridden a sport bike knows the problem with the ZX7 was spelled GSXR

You are way off the mark as far as durability goes. The 7r was behind the times yet had much more proven components, the price being added weight. My two are still rocking, 23 years later, very reliable.
