This is yet another very well-made video, and I'm glad to have seen it. About Rolling Stone printing an already-debunked false narrative of the ham sandwich, I'm reminded of how a reviewer wrote a good review of Paul McCartney's Ram album, and then was ordered to write a BAD review of it. They ran the bad review. Rolling Stone is not as respectable as some might think.

Great post! And thanks for spending time on Monterey Pop. 1967 was a much rosier time time than 1968, which stirred up the public's feelings, often contradictory, from events like the assassinations of RFK and Martin Luther King, a divisive presidential race, and in January, Hanoi's Tet offensive which prompted Walter Conkite (our CBS uncle who always told the truth, so we thought) to criticize the war on the evening news. (Remember that there were only 3 channels in '68). Crowds at concerts were more politicized, and plans for a second Monterey Pop festival were nixed by area conservatives who criticized the '67 Festival as the rock and roll brought sex and drugs (!!!)near their homes.

11:00 Fascinating that there was almost a M&P connection with RFK's '68 campaign. RFK's transformation in the last 4 years of his life is compelling to explore in a lot of books by the likes of insiders like Jack Newfield & Pierre Salinger & George Plimpton & biographers like Halberstam & Schlesinger & Thurston Clarke. But that's a new one on me. Shows RFK intention to reach the activist young generation in 1968, very different mindset from the new frontier of 1960 when Frank Sinatra was the go-to guy for a campaign song. And when RFK went down, so did that generation in terms of any connection with mainstream politics. Eugene McCarthy didn't carry that credibility. Hunter Thompson remembered it as the end of things. Thompson's 30,000 piece on that moment & his dilemma about the NRA, which Johnny Depp read & says is as good as anything Thompson ever wrote, remains unpublished.

Denny once did an interview up here in Canada and talked about how he got sober and how tough the road was for John. I will never forget his words. It helped plant the seed for me getting sober years later. I always regretted not thanking him. I love their appearance at Monterey Pop Festival. Although the performance is ragged, and the harmonies in particular are pretty rough sounding, it still manages to exude charm and even optimism, and Cass' between-song banter is a hoot from start to finish. They hated the fact that it was released as an album, and as an album it is indeed pretty subpar. But if you want to get some of that Summer of Love feeling, its really a pretty fun set to hear. Really enjoyed these episodes!

Excellent! Excellent!! Excellent!!! Loved these series Matt on The Journeymen and The Mamas Papas, interesting to hear about The Monterey Pop Festival. - Back in the 90's my parents took me to the Monterey Bay Aquarium and as we were making our way back home I remember telling my dad to make a quick stop at the Monterey Fairgrounds, He couldnt understand what was the reason for going, because there was nothing going on there, but I mentioned to him that I just wanted to stop really quick and take a look, and as I got out of the car I noticed the place looked exactly the same as in the movie and to my suprise the front entrance was completly open and I walked right in and there was no one around and it was completly deserted so I went up the stage completly awe struck with the idea that I was standing right on the spot were these great artists like Jimi Hendrix, The Who, Otis Redding, Janis Joplin and The Mamas and Papas performed on. - It was very surreal and you could feel the vibes on that stage.

Even when I think I know a lot about a particular 60's group, you never fail to impress with a very informative and enjoyable band biography. I particularly appreciated how you started the entire story going back to The Journeymen. What has impresses me most about the Mamas and the Papas is the legacy they left behind after only three years of existence (and contentious years at that). Hard to think of any band with a similar resume in such a short period of time. (And they did not have the benefit of notable solo careers that might have carried the music forward - I consider the "New Mamas and Papas" to be a rather marginal substitute to the real thing.)

Thanks for this documentary, Matt. I appreciate your empathy for Cass, a tremendous singing talent and a big hearted person. She didn't deserve such a cruel epithet. Overall, I think the Ms & Ps had their spontaneous moment of musical affinity and friendship, but it didn't last much more than a couple years. After that, that magic focus dissolves, and the work is just okay. Four separate voices. Not the original collective of voices that was more than the sum of the parts. Only Cass had the potential for individual stardom. As always, you helped fill in the details for me.

My takeaway from this series, is that The Mamas and the Papas, through their association with Lou Adler and Dunhill Records, had creative control, enjoyed the fruits of their labor, and had all the benefits of their own label, something their contemporaries all struggled to achieve. The Mamas and The Papas had their business side taken care of in a tidy fashion. The foundation John and Michelle Philips established through the Monterey Pop Festival, still benefits public school music programs in Monterey County, CA. I might also add that the DVD of The Monterey Pop Festival is excellent, and includes performances that did not make it into the movie.

Great summation, Matt! I’ve always thought that their first album ‘If You Can Believe Your Eyes & Ears’ was by far their best. It’s one of the classic albums of the mid-60s- very solid folk-rock album packed with hits & great covers. On their next two albums, I enjoyed the singles (especially I Saw Her Again, Words of Love and Look Through My Window) but never got into the albums. I think the drugs really took a toll on the band members. The background info on Monterey Pop was fascinating- I never realized the extent of John Phillips involvement with setting up the festival but the minimal prep the band gave to their performance, especially Denny’s last minute appearance. Is this reflective of the bands tangled romantic relationships and bad blood?

The 2CD set of the complete singles from Real Gone Music is essential. It has all of the original mono singles mixes that got played on the radio (including the B-sides). It even includes several of the solo singles and tracks from People Like Us. It serves as a perfect “greatest hits” compilation, as it includes all of the hits. In great sound too!

As an original M&P's fan, I stopped listening to their work before MontereyPop happened... Now I hear why; none of their post '67 material sounds particularly compelling to me, especially when considered in the context of the pop/rock/folk scene of the time. Thanx very much for this discussion, which spans my teen yrs!
