A short video on the early origins of the Jurchens and Manchus. This video goes up to around 1100 CE.
Fun fact: speakers of southern Chinese and languages heavily influenced by China may notice that Mòjí and Mòhé sound similar. In Middle Chinese, Mòjí would have been pronounced something like /mɨut̚ kiɪt̚/, while Mòhé would have been pronounced something like /muɑt̚ kɑt̚/.
Also, I realized that it may not be clear in the video that the Liao dynasty was founded and ruled by the Khitans!

Hey everyone! My first video in a while. I tried using Adobe After Effects for the first time for the intro.
Hope you enjoy it.

Damn you really nailed the pronounciations. So many channels are lazy when it comes to pronouncing asian words correctly but it can really be seen that you did your research well. Good job!

I adore this, I will have to rewatch it later but I noticed your channel name and marked out pretty hard, since I'm left handed and it just brought back like a flood of memories of learning Hanzi, left handed, with its unique stroke order and it like, gave me flashbacks lol.

Did you know why 'Jurchen' of Manchuria and the 'Joseon' Dynasty sound similar? Because this name comes from the 'Ancient Joseon'. both Jurchen and Joseon(Korean) were people from the same country.
@xXxSkyViperxXx
@xXxSkyViperxXx Жыл бұрын
lol "Jurchen" is from some Proto-Tungusic word meaning "reindeer people" "Joseon" in chinese characters 朝鮮 is literally "morning fresh"
@UbermanNullist
@UbermanNullist Жыл бұрын
@@xXxSkyViperxXx The first king of Joseon, Seonggye Lee, grew up with the Jurchen People, and when he founded the Joseon Dynasty, Jurchen friends helped him. It is no coincidence that Lee Seong-gye chose "Joseon" as the country's name. The "reindeer people" theory is only Edward Vajda's argument. Manchuria was also an unsuitable place to raise reindeer, and they were an agricultural society.
@xXxSkyViperxXx
@xXxSkyViperxXx Жыл бұрын
@@UbermanNullist isnt cuz they initially came from way up north like other tungusic peoples that do reindeer herding and then they just settled a to the south so they can have better farmlands for more stable subsistence with agriculture
@UbermanNullist
@UbermanNullist Жыл бұрын
@@xXxSkyViperxXx I disagree with you. Edward Vajda is too old. They didn't come from the north, according to the latest study by Martine Robbeets at the Max Planck Institute. Koreanic, Japonic, and Tungusic originated from Manchuria. It started in an agricultural civilization 10,000 years ago and later they became Koreans, Mongolians, and Jurchen People.

Confusing in that you list a series of peoples or tribes and do not explain who they were or what their differences were. Good for scholars, but confusing for the general viewer.

no. The Jurchens applied to join, but Ming and Joseon refused. Because they are barbarians, once they enter Korea, they will inevitably plunder civilians.

Why do you assume that 扶余 was Korean? To date, nobody can really say with certainty whether the proto-Koreans were Tungusic, Mongolic, or Turkic in origin, aside from the fact that they originated from somewhere in Manchuria. Proto-Korean speakers eventually migrated into the peninsula and absorbed the indigenous Japonic speakers in the south, and later went through heavy sinicization. Linguistics argue that even Turkic originated in Manchuria. There were so many languages spoken in Manchuria alone, it's near impossible to identify ancient languages.
