Well done! Thank you for sharing. Incidental, I don't know if I told you, but I tested Swiss 2F in my M-1881 .45-70-500 cartridges and got 1,315.4 fps, compared to the 1.315.4 fps. the Ordnance Dept. reported. I did not get that same velocity with the 1.5F Swiss, so that tells me the Swiss 2F is an exact match to the Dupont powder being used in the period.

with modern brass it is rare. it was really common back in the day with the old internally primed cartridges it only happens in modern cartridges if you get a faulty case. like we had here. Case head separation is almost unheard of in 45-70 nowadays days. it does still happen in 43 Spanish brass like we were shooting from time to time. i think the rolling block is still a great gun provided you have good moden cases.

Is an 1873 Springfield Trapdoor Cadet rifle collectible or should I opt to find a regular infantry rifle/carbine?
@Real11BangBang
@Real11BangBang Ай бұрын
Well, this is a tough question to answer in the comments section. In truth, all trapdoors are collectible nowadays. The value on them here lately has been increasing by about $100 per year. Will that continue? I do not know. So there have been 4 different variations of trapdoor cadet rifles. The models of 1866, 1869, both in 50-70. The models 1873 and 1884 in 45-70. all of these are generally more valuable than the standard battle rifles. you beware and do your research do your research As in the. Late 1800s, many schools would take and cut down regular rifles to cadet rifle size so. So sometimes it's hard to tell if you have an original. Cadet rifles were made much smaller then regular rifles If what you are looking at is a real 1873 cadet rifle the barrel will 29.6 inches long from the front of the closed block most importantly the butt plate will be 1.5 inches wide. There were only 8,588 cadet model 1873 rifles made from 1874-1884 So depending. On condition they will be worth more than the battle rifles, But they will also be worth less than the carbines Especially the Early carbines that were in custer's serial number range. if you are simply looking for a trapdoor to shoot i would get a standard 1873 or 1884 rifle. If you are buying one to collect I suggest the book The 45-70 Springfield, 5th Edition, Revised and Expanded, a detailed reference guide, by Joe Poyer and Craig Riesch. That way, you know. Exactly what you're getting into lots of fakes out there. Anyway, sorry This message is so long.Hope it was helpful

Howdy, I have a question that I could use some help answering. On my single action army clone when I put it into the safety notch and pull the trigger with more or less 20 pounds of pressure or so, it brings the hammer back a little then drops. Almost looks like a double action. When in the safety notch there is a little play in the trigger not much though. So after the trigger moves a bit its stiff then after some good pressure it goes back, bringing the hammer back with it. Then the hammer falls anf the trigger resets. Like a double action, but the hammer doesnt go to full cock. Im pretty sure this isnt supposed to happen. I have a memory from more than a year ago when I was messing around with it unloaded of course, I had it in either the safety notch or half cock notch and with some force was able to pull the trigger and it went down. I examined the hammer and trigger and nothing looked broken or sheared. Just some marks where the blueing and color case hardening came off. I dont remember all the details because it was a while back. I will say though that since I assumed that it was broken when I just realized that I could do all this, I put it back into the safety then pressed on to the hammer from the back pretty hard and nothing happens. So are my parts broke? Does this happen, or have you heard of this? Does yours do this if you try it? Im not asking you to break your gun. Does your trigger wiggle a tiny bit while the gun is in the safety notch or is it locked tight. I can give more details if needed. Thank you and God bless.

It sounds like the top of the trigger might be slightly bent. The thing about the safety notch is that it prevents it from firing, but if you pull the trigger hard enough while in the safty notch, you can bend the trigger top. That would be the first thing I would check
@landonsimpson7839
@landonsimpson7839 22 күн бұрын
@@Real11BangBang thank you I will check when I can. Would you consider it still safe? I usually carry it in the safety, so I dont want to carry it like that unless I know its still safe. Also if it is bent could I possibly bend it back to "normal" or do I need to buy a new one. And if it isnt bent what then?
@Real11BangBang
@Real11BangBang 22 күн бұрын
@landonsimpson7839, well, i would get it fixed. Just to be safe. If that doesn't work, you may need a new hammer

@@Real11BangBang I may have miscronstrued what you said, but why a new hammer and not a new trigger? If the trigger is what may be bent

@landonsimpson7839, you asked what to do. If the trigger is not bent, that is when you start looking at the hammer

I have a wierd but very interesting idea about muzzleloading a trapdoor that you guys can try: Step 1, put an empty case without primer in the chamber of the Springfield trapdoor, Step 2: Close shut the trapdoor aka closing the breach, half cock the rifle. Step 3: put in a 44 caliber paper cartridge using the standard musket loading technique down the bore using the "cleaning rod" of the rifle. Step 4: Seat the powder and the ball and remove "ramrod", step 5: open the chamber again and then stuff a primer in the base of the unprimed case. Step 6: full cock and fire. Let me know if this technique work.
