“The Land Called New Jersey” is a color film that portrays 300 years of progress in New Jersey and the contributions of the citizens of the state to the history of the United States. Produced by Humble Oil & Refining Company in the early 1960s, it includes sequences on the granting and the naming of the state, on the colonial period, on early industry and transportation, and on Thomas Edison and the age of invention. The program describes the industries, educational system, cities, recreational areas, landmarks, historic sites and other features of 20th century New Jersey. It opens in 17th century England and a re-enactment at mark 01:18 of how King Charles II, who gave his brother, the Duke of York (later King James II), the region between New England and Maryland as a proprietary colony. James then granted the land between the Hudson River and the Delaware River (the land that would become New Jersey) to two friends who had remained loyal through the English Civil War: Sir George Carteret and Lord Berkeley of Stratton. Scenes of New Jersey’s natural wonders are interspersed with illustrations and re-enactments of the region’s pre-Colonial days - including the Steuben House (a noted example of Bergen Dutch sandstone architecture) in River Edge, shown at mark 04:40, and a cedar plank log cabin at Hancock’s Bridge, shown at mark 04:57. Eastern New Jersey eventually became the new home for settlers from New England, with much of that influence still apparent in New Jersey architecture and Colonial churches, as viewed at mark 06:27. Western New Jersey, settled by the Quakers, still shows their influence, such as homes with patterns of glazed brick. Mark 09:09 takes the viewers into Colonial times and shows the Teaburners' Monument in Greenwich Township, commemorating the 1774 Greenwich Tea Party. We learn some of the five major battles of the Revolutionary War fought in New Jersey, and how George Washington (famously) crossed the Delaware River and participated in the pivotal Battle of Trenton (mark 10:00). At mark 13:07 the viewer is shown Ford’s Mansion in Morristown, which served as Washington’s headquarters from December 1779 to June 1780. Re-created scenes from post-Revolutionary War New Jersey follows, including tributes to its history as an iron producer, and at mark 19:45 learn of John Stevens’ contribution to transportation via the creation of the first steam[-powered locomotive - which took place in Hoboken in the 1800s. New Jersey soon became a railroad leader, helping smaller communities develop into more thriving locations. Perhaps the film’s greatest tribute is reserved for inventor Thomas A. Edison, introduced at mark 21:07. (It was in Menlo Park, New Jersey, in 1879 that Edison demonstrated the first successful light bulb model). As the film connects the past and the present while drawing to a close, the narrator reminds the viewer that New Jersey continues to be a leader in all aspects of research and development.

Excellent film about this state. 4:01 - The Lenni Lenape are not gone. There is a significant population of them in Cumberland County, and probably a little bit in Salem County as well. 4:38 - The Steuben House- we visited that on a class trip around 1976.

So.. always thought it was Lake Apackon. But that's because I was hooked on Phonics. Then many years later on a return trip while driving out to Roseland we passed by a roadside marker and I saw that it said Lake Hopatcong, and by the way, yes.. it is Taylor Ham.😆

Reminds me of my school education in NJ and now that I know more, it is easy to pick out all the oversights and errors - like the misogynistic undertones: the Leni Lenape was a matriarchal society and colonial women did a lot more than make candles and spin wool. As for Edison powering the nation and designing the light bulb - complete fabrication. It was Westinghouse using Tesla's inventions that powered the nation - still does. Tesla was AC current; Edison was DC which was dangerous, the current hard to move any distance and needed power stations every few blocks, expensive, and unreliable. Odd that these things were well known when this was made but given the conservative times and backwards society, putting out crap like this that bent or broke the truth seemed perfectly fine.

The taxes were becoming to much to bear for the average working man even then but I'll always cherish my memories of growing up there.😊

Here's the issue: Tens of thousands of films similar to this one have been lost forever -- destroyed -- and many others are at risk. Our company preserves these precious bits of history one film at a time. How do we afford to do that? By selling them as stock footage to documentary filmmakers and broadcasters. If we did not have a counter, we could not afford to post films like these online, and no films would be preserved. It's that simple. So we ask you to bear with the watermark and timecodes. In the past we tried many different systems including placing our timer at the bottom corner of our videos. What happened? Unscrupulous KZbin users downloaded our vids, blew them up so the timer was not visible, and re-posted them as their own content! We had to use content control to have the videos removed and shut down these channels. It's hard enough work preserving these films and posting them, without having to spend precious time dealing with policing thievery -- and not what we devoted ourselves to do. Unfortunately I have never visited New Jersey, in fact I have only visited Georgia so I can’t speak from experience, but have seen documentaries showing the state, and I thought it looked very beautiful (in summer) and was a good place to live, obviously you have first hand experience, what is It really like? What is the reason it’s called the “garbage state”?.

If you are calling North Jersey a dung heap, then I can't argue. South Jersey on the other hand is a nice place to live.

Lets consider I am sure you will find pro and con of all the states you live in, but NJ has a lot to offer, rolling hills and the beaches. Sadly, I do not like seeing the overbuilding in this state, its now the asphalt state, not the Garden State, a lot of apartment complexes adding traffic to the rails and highways. Despite this, I live in lower Middlesex County where there is still a lot of preserved open space. As to the film, it was made in 1964, and showcases the history of the state of NJ.

N.J. was once a beautiful state. Unfortunately, urban sprawl, greed, and crooked politicians are destroying it. I live in south Jersey where the farms and forests are being replaced with townhouses and shopping centers. It does not resemble the state that I grew up in.

If you start a documentary about New Jersey and don’t mention the people who were here first then it’s not a real documentary.

Ideat. Make your own Doc then... ideat. No one knows who was here First. Ideat. For thousands of years various Indian tribes were in conflict and war... among Themselves... The European tribe then won and put a stop to it. .
