Wonder if big name VN studios will branch out to smartphones eventually. Seems like a much easier entrypoint than having to own a console or a pc.

Awesome video! Hearing the history of visual novel to anime adaptations was really interesting and I’m surprised with how far back they go! And I agree with what you said: even if most of them end up being mediocre, it’s better we have them than don’t. Besides we do get the occasional gem like the Clannad or Steins; Gate anime and those alone makes it worth if

Amazing video! I wish we could get adaptations of small and recent visual novels like Parquet, which I believe would be perfect as an anime

I'm surprised Danganronpa wasn't mentioned given how many of the newer fans of it come from the anime adaptation.
@WarudoChaos2 жыл бұрын
Danganronpa barely sold over 5000 copies domestically, plus the adaptation itself was rather forgettable. Danganronpa 3 while somewhat of an interesting specimen, with it being both a sequel and prequel, did even worse numbers. Unfortunate, but that places it in the giant pile of "these are generic okay/good adaptations".

I'm surprised how well the Tsukihime anime did, I wonder if they ever thought of animating the other routes like they did with Fate, it may have gotten as popular
@ViApp06 ай бұрын
I think Nasu is the biggest hater of this anime, he doesn't like his writing in the original Tsukihime so he probably absolutely loathes the thing that makes it even worse. He never extensively talked about it back then or in the Remake interviews, even though it's the first TM anime, it conveyed the atmosphere pretty well and he praises the manga at every occasion.

Didnt mention 11 eyes? Island? Muv Luv Alternative? Mahoutsukai no Yoru? I knows theres more but I named the ones off the top of my head.
@WarudoChaos2 жыл бұрын
Why would I? None of them are particularly notable IMO - they're just lost in the glut of more recent adaptations. For B roll, I had plenty of other options.

The fact that they're minor meant that they lost out compared to the other equally 'minor' titles. Luck of the draw.

They need to bring back Visual Novel adaptations. Even though they weren't that good, they're still much better than the Isekai trash that seems to oversaturate the market nowadays. Modern anime won't be the same without Visual Novel Adaptations as they had a big hand in creating the Moe genre.

I watched the Higurashi anime before reading the visual novel and I think the anime ruined my experience. I am sad that I can never read the visual novel spoiler-free, theorising. But the best thing about anike adaptations of pretty much anything is the merch. Shirakawa-go really only started selling cool Higurashi stuff after rhe Gou Sotsu anime. So that's one good thing. Also I think Clannad maybe has theb best anime adaptation. Flawed, but they did their best.

Very good video on the subject. Imo, there are some solid vn to anime adaptations; mainly the big Kyotoani/key Adaptations of kanon, clannad and air. And actually I found the ending of the anime kanon better than the Vns ending (it was more fleshed out). Then you have the type moon anime adaptions which are pretty hit or miss; unlimited blade works and heaven's feel worked out fairly well. And you have higaruashi, white album 2 (wish they did the 2nd half), and the ef series was ok and steins;gate. These days, visual novel anime just really don't do service to the source. It's hard to adapt a story that uses the non linearity of a video game to a linear anime. Prime examples of this are animes like little busters and rewrite (two of my favorite Vns of all time). Both embrace the concept of the player playing through multiple times to get multiple endings, and the anime were doomed to fail because they simply can't pull of a similar trick. It also doesn't help that visual novels tend to be much more detailed than their anime counter parts. The grisia novels, while not my favorites, were very detailed and their anime adaptations left so much on the cutting room floor. Steins gate was able to work well as an anime because it's a fairly linear story and could have been a kentic novel with a few minor changes here and there. At the same time, there are moments in the story that work so much better than they do in the anime. Hell the sequel didn't work at all as an anime because it felt so rushed. There are always going to be issues when it comes to adapting one story from one medium to another. And this is especially true for interactive media.
