A few things to note post-production thanks to some mentions in the comments: 1 - Kiyoshi Volume 2 is NOT coming out in January. Not encouraging, but not the end. 2 - The last 5 series batch was in 1998. I missed a comma in my own notes. 😭 3 - TADATOSHI Fujimaki. Got Chainsaw Man on the brain. 🙃 4 - There was another 4 manga batch that went from the end of 2022 magazine run into the start of 2023's run: Ichinose Family's Deadly Sins, Cipher Academy, Ichigoki's Under Control, and Fabricant 100. Still follows the half being successful rule.

Now that MHA and JJK are over, the 4 oldest manga that are currently running in Shonen Jump are One Piece, Hunter X Hunter, Undead Unluck, and Mission Yozakura Family. Cipher Academy, along with Ichinose Family both had the rare half axe treatment. Personally, I hope that in either this new batch or the next one, we see MaMaYuYu's author give it another try. I think I might have mentioned this in a comment on one of your other videos, but while the art and storytelling are rough around the edges, I think the mangaka for this series has this great sense for creative decisions. His use of onomatopoeia in particular struck me, and I love when mangaka integrate those into the artwork like he does in some of MaMaYuYu's panels. I think he just needs a stronger concept and more refined art and character writing, and I'm hoping he's been polishing up those skills since MaMaYuYu got the axe. This isn't to do with the topic at hand, but while watching this video, I realized I'd really love it if you did deep dives on more series. I like your weekly reviews and I love these sorts of news segments, but if you had the time, seeing you take one specific manga and analyze it closely every month or two would be really welcome.

I think Shinobi Undercover has more of a shot than you're giving it credit for. It's been solidly in the middle of the pack so far and feels like it almost certainly exists to be the Yozakura Family replacement, which throughout its entire run held a similar position. I don't think that keeps it safe or anything and obviously bad sales in January could tank it out immediately, but I do think they have relatively decent hopes for it so it was surprising to see it as a high likelyhood of being axed. If anything it feels safer than at least half of the magazine right now to me. I think there's honestly a decent chance the next set could even just be MYF and Hakutaku alone but more likely three for a more fresh start to the year and that third would likely be Kiyoshi (which I don't want to happen I'm Kiyoshi Gang but I can also see writing on the wall). Meanwhile I think Undead Unluck might end up lasting until the set of cuts afterwards so they can fully wrap everything up and that's the set to really keep an eye on because that extra few months of time and information will confirm the fates of about half the magazine. Kiyoshi (if it survives), Chojo, Hima-ten, Kill Blue, Shinobi, Syd Craft, even Astro and Nue could be in the firing line. I'd even have included Witch Watch if it wasn't getting the anime as a low contender. You're definitely right that a big axe is dropping soon either way, I just think it's potentially happening a little later than you do.
@AxelablazeProductionsАй бұрын
Main reason why I had Shinobi as a high chance is that Jump is notorious for cutting off newer series before they can take off. It's by a veteran team, so that could either give them more leeway or more scrutiny. Regardless of what happens, the video was just one big speculative piece since we still have no idea what Yu Saito is going to do. A big move has to be made eventually, but like you said, it could happen later rather than sooner. Either way, there will be heartbreak eventually.

@@Kaimax61 One thing you're forgetting is that a lot of manga that gets cancelled has POTENTIAL. You can't plant a fruit tree and cut it down next year because it didn't bear fruit. Most people who watch One Piece or any other long running series say something like "it gets good around chapter 137" but Jump hardly gives these ones the chance to get that far. I'm speaking from the perspective of someone who has seen many good manga with great potential get axed, but I wouldn't know how manga sales work in Japan. That's why all the new manga seem either rushed, extremely short, or like they didn't have time to focus on key factors that would make the story better. Creative artists in a tight market struggling to show how good their product WOULD get all within the first 20 chapters
@GreatRusio21 күн бұрын
@@blackban4689 True but if you are getting published by jump there probably is a different bar all together, they will just cut down whatever to make room for new series since they can afford to do so in the pursuit of big names. I think most of the stuff that gets cancelled has potential and is interesting but so are the other series that come after, if a publisher like Jump focuses on getting real hits then who cares The artists knowingly compete to get published by jump since it's an amazing opportunity but there are more safe ways if you want an ongoing series.

I have to say this Axel. This latest chapter of Undead Unluck is the last chapter in it's respective volume. So it's got at least one more volumes worth of content left (9 chapters) but if they're starting to fight the final boss now, then you know it's gonna take more than one volume. Final bosses tend to take more than one volume to defeat, as we all know. So I'd give Undead Unluck a ballpark estimate of around 18 more chapters before it reaches an end. But I think we can all agree that it's definitely ending in the early portion of next year. We've all made peace with that.
@AxelablazeProductionsАй бұрын
I get where you're coming from. Most final boss fights can take a long time. That said there are a LOT of players here at the same time compared to other arcs where only a handful can make a difference. I think it will be enjoyable either way, but let's see how it shakes out.

Well researched and presented. I can see why you'd think something like this could happen. Especially as when new people become in charge of things, they want to establish their mark & legacy. I've seen people say this about TV networks too. There's a reason Roboco made a chapter to suck up to the EoC as soon as they could lol. Seems January will determine the trajectory of things. Couple things I want to add. tl;dr at the bottom I am surprised Astro Royale didn't get included in this discussion. This is both because of the mangaka and it being a newer series. Current sales should keep it safe from the next axes, but this series is an important aspects of the magazines potential identity. Much like Ichi the Witch we have not only a veteran, but talent from another magazine come on board. I feel like we may see that again in our next batch. Additionally, even if Astro survive this round, it's sales will determine the next. Same could be said for Ichi. Bring this up because this strategy of poaching mangaka may end if we get back to back losses. Next the axe candidates. Now the standards used made sense, but some of them were peculiar instances. Because P6 for sure was an axe, but Cipher is more debatable. Both lasted a good while too. So while I think using those as examples were important to say that Hima-ten & Kiyoshi may not be safe, they do fall in range to last just long enough to tell a story. Which considering the nature of both series, would work out fine. Focusing on these two, I know you've said before that Hima ten has a higher survival chance than Kiyoshi & the newest ToC seems to agree. But I feel with Syd craft as direct competition, that's also a factor in Hima ten's long term survival. Also as I just mentioned the ToC, KB may have a higher axe chance than I feel is presented. Rest of the candidates are straightforward enough. Hakutaku is gone and Shinobi Undercover has one shot. As for the gags it's always hard to say. High school family just died out of nowhere so it could happen for Chojo. I did want to end on possible candidates for the new batch. But it felt rather tacked on in this video so I'm not sure if you have a follow up in mind. If that's happening, I'd rather go into detail for that discussion. Though briefly I'll say some things. For my own personal wants I'd go with a psychological series, a scifi series, and/or a better game series. What makes the most sense for the magazine is probably a sports series, another battle series, and maybe a delinquent series. In terms of returns, I want the mangaka of Super Smartphone and Dororon back most. Maybe Red Hood & i tell C too. But if my theory of authors of other magazines showing up is true, then maybe Inagaki can come back and dual write series like Iruma's author. tl;dr great video. you made a solid argument and had data to back it up. Most of these axes I can see happening. I feel like Astro Royale & Ichi the Witch will be safe but their fate will determine a lot after this first set of axes. Though I will say even those that survive may only last a year and that could be okay. Got some ideas for the new batch but maybe save that for another video
@AxelablazeProductionsАй бұрын
My main factor for not bringing up Astro was because of the mangaka poaching thought process. I think it's going to receive that little extra grace that keepd it out of contention for February/March. After that? Could absolutely be in the discussion for an ax. I think making a new series speculation video would be good. Like you said, I just added a short blurb at the end of this video, so it would be good to go into my wants for genres, mangaka, etc

Don’t get me wrong, astro baby, ankoku delta, Dandadan and the none weekly gokurakugai hxh and Ryouta killed his brother, I very much like, but the first two are probably not going to last long, Dandadan is pretty good but not my favorite and the other three are just not weekly and the last is pretty new. Smother me is crazy good, but seems to be a shorter story on purpose that’s ending soon too. Most manga I enjoy nowadays are fan translated. Jump just doesn’t offer what I’m looking for anymore. Kill Blue surviving through sheer nepotism both had me giggling and go "aaaahhh, now it makes sense." I stand by that Kill Blue could have ended around chapter 50ish and it would have been a satisfying ending. It did not need to keep going. That being said, while I am enjoying Shinobi Undercover way more than I thought I would, it would not be surpise me if it got the axe. It's good, but it's not amazingly good. Like Ichi the Witch. I was instantly hooked from the first chapter, you can tell that manga is quality. I'm also surprised I'm enjoying Hima-Ten! so much. It's a fun little romcom and like with Jump+ having several of those ending recently, both platforms are lacking in romcoms.

I’m thinking MYF, UU, and Hakutaku for this round and SU, KB, and Kiyoshi for next round. Astro Royale and Hima-Ten! feel relatively safe to me, especially with this arc of AR and the recent rankings for HT. For new series next year, it’s basically a given that we’ll see one of the past two GFC winners start their series. Matsuura coming back also feels very likely. A sports series (since we had zero in 2024) and a major veteran returning to up the perceived quality of the magazine (like how they did with Hunter x Hunter when JJK left).
