I have many happy memories of arriving at the old coach station on Wellington street to visit relatives.

The building that replaced the coach station blends in so well, it is hard to believe it was ever there!

Great video, I grew up in the old Salvation Army hostel building which had the entrance on Lisbon street, the hostel was expanded onto Grove street in the 1970s and the old hostel became the home of the hostel managers (my parents). Loved that place and it was so nice to remember the old street, played in the old train buildings many times.

Thank you for commenting Betty. My dad grew up on Grove Street. He was there in the 40s and 50s. His mum used to give him money to have his tea in the hostel, or SalGash, as he called it.

Your videos are great. I’ve wanted to learn about the history of Leeds for a while, but haven’t been able to find any good videos. These are great.

I used to work at the old YEP building at the end of Wellington St in the early 90s as a door-to-door sales canvasser for the paper across much of Leeds and surrounding areas.

I love this series of vides mate. Thank you. Very interesting and full of information that you can’t find elsewhere. Good to learn a bit about Leeds. The city doesn’t really do itself justice with its lack of museums

Thank you. It’s a fantastic city. I love learning about it too.

I remember them building the YEP building. I used to go past it on my way to work and back. So many years ago.

Very informative! I quite liked the overlay of the old photograph looking down Wellington Street on top of the contemporary view to see what's been retained, and to help me better place the position of the old Central Station. Wonder how much is going to change around here when the new residential/commercial development gets built on the site of the old International Swimming Pool - which for some reason is still signposted on signage on the Inner Ring Road over a decade after its demolition!

Thank you. I had a wander around Wellington Place when I was filming. It's really impressive. Hopefully the additions at the swimming pool site will be similarly welcoming.

Very interesting and well presented, as with all your videos about Leeds. Question: Am I right in thinking that before the YP building opened in the early 70s, the paper was based in a building on Wellington St?
@GeogJuice2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for commenting. I think the main office was on Albion Street before then. However, I am not sure where the paper was actually printed at that time. Maybe printed near or on Wellington St?

Nice video! I like the mix of old and new. I'm thinking of how you focused on an interesting old photo of one particular city block that had some remaining buildings, which were later demolished for (only) the widening of the street -- necessary I'm sure, but it's a bit of a shame; wouldn't it be interesting to see those buildings today, instead of a wider street. Tour guides can't generate much enthusiasm with "as you can see, the street is WIDER here..." cue Monty Python style video! 😊

The Napoleonic wars certainly had a significant influence on place names in Leeds.

Sorry but there isn’t one building on today’s Wellington Street that I’d describe as impressive, square boxes full of glass isn’t pretty!

Your narration would benefit from a higher quality microphone, closer to your mouth. Maybe even a lavaliere mic. Right now it sounds like you're on the other side of the room or using a laptop built-in microphone.

Thanks for your feedback Geffel. I have changed to a good quality microphone and started using the Audacity app. Hopefully there is an improvement on the more recent videos.
