The Battle of the Teutoburg Forest, also known as the Varian Disaster, was a significant conflict that took place in 9 AD. It was a major defeat for the Roman Empire at the hands of Germanic tribes led by Arminius. The battle occurred near modern Kalkriese, where an alliance of Germanic peoples ambushed and destroyed three Roman legions along with their auxiliaries. This defeat had a profound impact on Roman military strategy and halted Rome’s expansion into Germania east of the Rhine River.
The Ostrogoths were a prominent Germanic people during the Roman era. In the 5th century, they established one of the two great Gothic kingdoms within the Western Roman Empire, drawing upon the large Gothic populations settled in the Balkans. The Ostrogothic Kingdom in Italy was formed under the leadership of Theodoric the Great. After the death of Attila and the collapse of the Hunnic empire, the Ostrogoths gained independence and eventually came into conflict with the Byzantine Empire. Their kingdom lasted until the mid-6th century when they were absorbed into other Germanic groups such as the Lombards.
