My 7th great-grandfather was a Jacobite from Inverness who was exiled as an indentured servant to the colony of Maryland. I'm curious to know why he was illiterate, though, if Scotland really placed such a premium on education.

Opinionated propaganda.Scotland tried to invade England when Henry VIII was in France his wife Cathrin slaughter then in England. Then they tried to gain political alliances with France and Spain not to mention the Pope. Who had added in the 1066 invasion of Britan How has this worked for them? I am of Scottish descent . not this kind of interpretation of the Scottish. Consider the reality of there alliances and failed military actions. Reality is a lot different than opinion. The Romans a civilised people walled them off. The Scotts should be proud of there heritage, not their rebellious nature. There military history of Gordon Highlanders and the Blackwatch. Try focusing on the part the monopoly of whisky sales to the British Commonwealth advantage them. The part they play developing and maintaining north sea oil. Free trade with the privileged place in Britan.

Given that sort of distortion, making the mistake of seeing big buildings and roads as the be all and end all, you need to read The Conquest of Gaul written by Julius Caesar as his excuse for reducing the population of Gaul by 25% in less than 10 years - not fucking civilized at all. I agree with you Andrew, this video is one of the most outrageous examples of this sort of nonsense. 17:30 I found this curious: The Jacobites fighting for the Brits are "laying the foundations of the British Empire. You've also got the economic foundation this peace brought (the aftermath of Culloden) which allows things like the intellectual revolution...." And the image is a guy walking up to a pile of rocks commemorating the Battle of Culloden--a massacre of Scots by the English. I guess this is called, "putting a brave face on it." Scottish history needs a major rethink. It's really been one disaster after another. "Laying the foundations" of somebody else's empire??. Scotland barely voted down independence from an inept London political mess--intending to remain in Europe. The English, 'please vote to stay...' then turned around and voted for a ill considered bucket of chaos called Brexit, that the Russians were probably behind (sure a UK in even greater chaos than either the Conservatives or Labour could cause isn't good for anyone in the UK, or Europe....who would want such a thing?) The system of kings, queens and lairds benefited no one but themselves. How can you see all those destroyed cottages and still want to pretend any of it was good for Scotland? The sound of gunfire at Culloden is the 'sound of Britain and Scotland being dragged into the modern era." It was an ill planned military farce that resulted in a one sided massacre. Nothing except submission, second class status and exploitation can come from such a one sided debacle. Most progress in history is not made on battlefields, not made by 'great men', it's made by people working and trading. 'Provided martyrs and inspiration' ? Just like Isis. I'm sorry to be so cranky. I usually delete this stuff. Forget history. What can the Scots do to build their future? Education, form Scottish business, trade with the world, break up the huge estates, or further socialize them (I liked being able to camp anywhere in Scotland. In this Scotland leads the world. ) Never expect London to do anything for you. Don't be mean about it, just keep your taxes local (and fix those insane roads! How about invite overseas Scots to attend university in Scotland? No Scot in Canada, the US or Australia has had to bow to some laird in over 200 years.

The reality is Scotland was sold to England. As soon as that was done , their own government was against them and it was a lose lose situation.
