He had political trainings and probably even the strategic mind of cesar drilled into his head. He being a bright young man is no doubt a major contributor to his success. But without Cesar's personal tutelage and Anthony's notorious reputation he probably wouldn't have gotten as far as he did

@@lcmiracle on the contrary, Octavian wasn't able to attend Caesar's campaigns, although he wanted to, he practically worshiped his Great-Uncle but his mum, Atia was a control-mummy and so Octavian didn't really join with Caesar as much as you'd think When he turned 16, then he was able to join Caesar in Spain (during the end of Ceasar's civil wars), upon joining him, Caesar was surprised at the boy because he unknowingly traveled through enemy's lands and so accompanied him on the journey back to Rome, something definitely happened during that 3 month trip that made Caesar know who his rightful heir is... Octavian had the strategic genius from the start, that's why he was chosen as the heir, not Mark Anthony, not Brutus, not Caesarion, but Octavian, sure he definetly picked up a thing or two by watching Caesar rule, but the number one thing Octavian learned from his uncle is to BE RUTHLESS and UNFORGIVING (indirectly), he practically was Machiavelli before Machiavelli ever existed

Probably worth noting that neither Horace nor Vergil wrote anything without Octavian's approval. All the "horrible evil times" stuff is mostly there to justify Ocatvian's "totally not civil" war and to set a contrast to the awesome golden times that the chosen one (Augustus, but then some Jews got confused) would bring.

Also, in his later writings, he does express a lot of regret and guilt about killing him...but yeah he still killed him. And Cleopatra killed her husband/brother. Murder of the family was common.

Agrippa did have a large channel dug from lake Avernus to the sea but didn't actually dig the lake itself(volcanic crater). In fact, lake Avernus was famous in mythology for a small cave by its shores that was supposedly the entrance to Hades from the Aeneid.

Human sacrifice in ancient Rome was actually a thing. Sure,it wasn't common like in other mediteranean cultures,but was still a thing. There are many proves. Before the creation of a new temple,a ritualistic human sacrifice was performed. A greek man and a celt slave were buried alive under the base of the temple,in order to gain favor from the gods. It's still a very controvertial topic,the proves are there...but..they are still not enough to be considered an istorical canon. An actual confirmed form of human sacrifice was performed in the arenas. All the gladiators that died in the arenas were considered a sacrifice in the glory of the gods.... Istorical accounts tell us that when the Colosseum was completed,hundreds of slaves,criminals and prisoners of war were conducted there to die....it was a 3 days thing... So,yeah. Romans practiced human sacrifice,but not in the forms that we associates with the terminology. (√˙○˙)√

And of course the Vestal Virgin the Senate sacrificed after Cannae. The more you read history, the more cruel the ancients become. Of course, the killing of gladiators was rare; training a gladiator was costly, so you didn't do away with them on a whim. The same wasn't true of condemned prisoners of course, who died much more frequently in the arena.

But from what you said Octavian wasn't really a strategist, most of the heavy lifting was done by Agrippa. And before that when they were a Triumverate it also seemed like Antony was the one pulling the weight... Octavian seemed more like that one guy in the group project who does little work and still gets the A because his name was on the project... And Lepidus is just happy to be included...
