i really miss the old Sydney Monorail it was a great way to see the city
@avlisk2 жыл бұрын
November 2022, I just found out! Sad. It was one of Sydney's attractions that helped make that city special. Build a monorail that actually provides a real transportation alternative, and it would probably succeed. But the commitment to do that has never been there. (See Seattle)

i loved the monorail when it was around when I was a kid, but I can see why they took it down. I think i went on it like twice in my entire life, once I was like 3 or 4 and the other I was maybe 6/7, and then they tore it down around 2012 when I was 8... but yeah, it was already dead for some reason, no one really used it, and it was a bit of an eyesore in some places like over that bridge in pyrmont (I think is where it is), and it looks so much better now without it. I did love monorail rides but when I went on them, I miss them

They were left abandoed in some streets in Sydney. Some station make Metro Project. And the Dulwich Hill extension light rail is closed. I think this just for few more weeks is back on tracks. I hope L1 line ( Inner West light rail ) no close.

But I remember seeing the old monorail stations when I was in Sydney and the monorail tracks were long gone too.

Some of them are still there (like the Harbourside station), and they just seem to be abandoned.

Not sure why monorails get such scorn these days: they remain an incredibly effective way to integrate mass transport into a developed city without disrupting existing structures. Although upon reflection, though, maybe that’s exactly why developers hate them: they’re cheap, convenient, and provide little excuse to engage in massive costly tear-downs followed by lucrative redevelopments.
@enzoscarp3 жыл бұрын
I agree but they just looked ugly and didn't integrate too well into the city. metro is what countries with the most successful rail infrastructure (like japan as an example) have been doing for years, and they've perfected the art in that time. we're so late to the party. in saying that, it is super expensive as you mentioned, but I feel like if the government kept investing in better rail infrastructure and got metro right in Sydney and stopped building all these stupid tunnels that nobody asked for that don't solve problems because they're so heavily tolled, then things we be a lot easier around Sydney. and besides, were like the most taxed city in Australia, and people don't really mind paying for public transport (at least from what I can see) but they have issues using motorways with high tolls, especially truckers who are the sole purpose that these tunnels were built. if you're running a business and you get I don't know, 300$ for a single delivery (I don't know exacts but a rough figure is there), and you're paying like 20$ each way, that breaks 40$ into your profit, plus you have to take into account fuel and other expenses and its just not worth it, not for the people and nor for the government

Monorail, Trams, Inner West line, Hamilton - Newcastle rail line. Why are we destroying these things for ''development''?
@sydneyrailbuff6 жыл бұрын
Good point. There are some things that we have sadly seen gone. The Monorail is one that I particularly miss. I must ask, though, did you just say Inner West line? Last I recall, the Inner West line is going strong and remains busy as ever! To be fair, there have been new lines such as the South West Rail Link, North West Rail Link (even if the idea of having it run as a single-deck metro is questionable) and the Inner West Light Rail extension to Dulwich Hill.
@sydneytrainsinfovids47346 жыл бұрын
I'm referring to the inner west line that closed in 2013, the one that showed up purple on cityrail maps and which housed the stations Croydon - Macdonaldtown until it was terminated.

Sydney Trains info vids You can thank Gladys Berejiklian and Clover Moore for the closure of one of the best tourist icons in sydney.
@rhyceg6 жыл бұрын
The line in Purple you are referring to ie the Inner West Line was just amalgamated into the Light Blue T2 line. T2 Parramatta & T2 Hombush trains all stops to the city, that was done mainly to tidy up the map, and since that line didn't actually take any alternate route to the light blue T2 it made no sense to include it anymore. It was nothing more than a remnant from those Liverpool to the City via Regents Park trains, which don't exist anymore, and for good reason. The reason is that it restricted the throughput of trains, creating a bottleneck at Lidcombe. Removing that service also reduced the likelihood of highly utilised points failing and crippling the network, by really only using them only for the odd late night terminating movements or empty trains.

I read that the promised benefits from developers from closing the Newcastle Line have not materialised. Suspect the benefit was to developers, rather than from developers.
