An interesting compilation. I was still a child when the last service ran and although I wasn't onboard for that final run, I got to make some last trips on a couple of other lines before they were foolishly taken out of service. To my knowledge, trams were never referred to as "streetcars" in Sydney. That is a name from the U.S.

It's pretty depressing when you realise Sydney had a better public transport system in the 1930's than it does now.
@sydneyrailbuff6 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't be that harsh, but there are certainly some things (e.g. the tram system) that Sydney had back then but not now

Yeah

it's also depressing that in 1930, their trains only came once every hour on lines like the North Shore, as well as having no airconditioning, and only carrying half the amount of passengers. Only half the amount of bus services they have now, and an absolutely under class ferry system.

It's sad how they destroyed the trams Excellent video!
@sydneyrailbuff6 жыл бұрын
Thanks! While I agree it's sad they got rid of the tram system, we most likely wouldn't have the current light rail system (i.e. Dulwich Hill Line) without that event

I was never aware of Perth's former tram network. Turns out it's really fascinating!

I think Australia trams was getting removed back in the 1950s, but Victoria survived the most and left what’s out there, I think.

The trams ran for exactly 100 years, between 1861-1961. This can't be a co-incidence

Were there trams at Fairfield that time🤔
@tacitdionysus32203 жыл бұрын
No, Fairfield would have been an isolated village at that time. Sydney suburbs stopped at about Burwood for much of that era. The only big department stores were in the city and if you lived at Liverpool or even Parramatta, people would ask "Why do you live way out there?" The nearest trams ever got to Fairfield were on lines in Burwood, Enfield and Ashfield. Think of where the state government owned buses (not the subsidised private ones) run, and that's roughly where the tram system covered.

You need to put in a history of the Light Rail in there... Oh well! You can do the Light Rail for the next video!
@sydneyrailbuff6 жыл бұрын
That was actually the first one of these videos I did! Well, it was only the Dulwich Hill Line, so I didn't mentioned the under-construction CDB&SE Light Rail or the proposed Parramatta light rail. Here it is: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jqLYioONmqx8e7s
