Glad you enjoyed it. You might also enjoy my two tales of Yankee Jim. A few years after I finished my first edition, I spoke with a retired lawyer working with the San Diego historical society. He noted that the then mayor of San Diego might have been the person who fingered Yankee Jim. Jim was hanged for taking a rowboat out for a joyride. However, the added info sent me back to unearthing the fact that there was a second man who went by the name “Yankee Jim”. A second video series you might enjoy would be my two part study of Lola Montez. Thanks again for your kind remarks. M

@@michaelstark1 Wow! Hanged for taking a row boat out. Some folk think they have a rough life today? Thanks for replying. 😎

The river you identify as the Bear River, is actually the South Fork of the Yuba River. Interesting history. Thanks for posting it.

I’ll review the video. The Bear and the Yuba have changed courses. Thanks

@@michaelstark1 You crossed the Bear on your journey North on Highway 49. You just did it about a half hour before you hit the Highway 49 Bridge over the South Yuba. Blink twice at 60 mph and you miss it.

The north star mine is not north of the empire , it's west and slightly south below nevada county fairgrounds . I spent two summers in nevada city & grass valley in'64 and '67 moved to and lived in both from '72 to ' 75 , been all over the area from auburn to downieville and loyalton logging , been down in the 16 to 1 mine ('73) , helped work the willow valley mine claim ('73&'74) .

Correct: The North Star mine complex included the powerhouse. The directions to find the powerhouse is the next stop north after the exit to the Empire Mine. The North Star mine was sold to the Empire Mine. Julia Morgan designed the “cottage” for the North Star mine. She used rocks from the mine in her design. The Julia Morgan house is now open to the public and is located south of the powerhouse. My goal was to give directions that are easily followed. Thank you for your note.

Great video. I don't think its fair to mention Pelton without mentioning his predecessor Samuel Knight and the Knight Foundry. Personally, I've seen more knight shaped cups than pelton cups in the wild.

Good point…I will have to investigate knight Foundry. I just returned from a Northern European adventure. In Norway we found a Pelton wheel on display. The wheel was used throughout the world.

Yep, When Judge said no more hydraulic mining it was unfortunate for the greedy miner and fortunate in every other way👍❤
@michaelstark12 жыл бұрын
Hydraulic mining did not stop immediately. The Malakoff Diggins (State Park) had phone communications with their dams upstream. If a good marshal came snooping, the dam upstream was phoned to stop sending water downstream. It took a while for operations, up and down the Mother Lode, to halt operations. Thanx for viewing.

This guy has several things wrong . At 7:00 it shows the old hwy 49 bridge over the YUBA river NOT the bear river . I hauled many loads of logs across it '72-'75 . It's still there as was ped. bridge . The newer one is next to it a little downstream (west) . So any bear river reference he makes is the YUBA .
@michaelstark13 ай бұрын
Correct…the old bridge is a pedestrian bridge. It is also a local swimming destination. The title was in error. Thank you

Michael can you direct me to a geologist or miner? I'm trying to open up a historic mine up the road from 16 to 1
@michaelstark12 жыл бұрын
The best local source would be the bar in Allegheny. The 16:1 mine office is open. You might wander down to Nevada City and visit the North Star Powerhouse Museum. They might have some local contacts. As a last resort, you might find a representative from the Idaho-Maryland Mine operators. They are trying to reopen their mine. Good luck.

I'm a retired attorney from Hawaii who spends his summers living in Auburn and gold prospecting in the Motherlode. Do you own property with a historic mine on it? Aloha. Tim
