When I was going to the university, I remember my fellow science students always talked about liberal arts majors with such derision, as if what they did took no intellectual ability at all. At a high school or first year undergrad level maybe. But I do not think his mind would be well suited to the kind of analysis professional historians employ when going through primary sources and using them to write new history. I think he would be inclined to parrot facts back and would struggle to produce a coherent narrative out of them. He strikes me as one who would love the details too much to be able to effectively communicate the larger picture.

My 2 cents from a non-academic person: the issue with humanities being perceived as less difficult than sciences isn't necessarily due to scientists' biases, but more on how the disciplines are taught: any science/math classes up to secondary/college involve tests where you use your brain to apply the acquired knowledge to solve a problem. No history classes I've been to asked me to ever apply my knowledge on anything else than information recalling: you are supposed to learn to interpret present times based on history lessons: this is what every smart historian does. But there is absolutely no hint of this brainy/creative step at school, so Sheldon is perfectly aligned to how the discipline is treated in general

In History, yes. But at least in terms of International Relations they have a lot of theory on how the world works and how to conduct yourself through it. I say this as a chemist who has friends in the area. Nowhere near as scientific as actual STEM, but IR at least has some sort of methodology.

Actually, 1863 only applies to the states that seceded, the border states of Kentucky, Missouri, Maryland, and Delaware were all continued to allow slavery, though Missouri and and Maryland abolished it during the war. Slavery was abolished in Kentucky and Delaware in 1865, which are the last if you don't include the technicality of Mississippi only formally abolishing slavery in 2013 (look it up). Though for the characters in California, it would have been illegal since 1850 under US Law.

As a history teacher, I'm sure you would. Doesn't mean he's wrong. History is history. You can't change it, you can't improve it, you can't deny it. It is what it is. All you can do with it is repeat the facts how they happened during those times. Titanic sank in 1912. You can't change that number or the event. It sank in 1912 and your job is to remember that event and that date and teach it to others. You can't change it, you can't come up with new ideas about it, you can't do anything with it other then repeat that fact to anyone willing to learn it.

Think of it like why titanic sank, was it inevitable, was engineering insufficient for such a journey etc. and then you'll have a look about if such a journey could be made and to make it happen and not to fall in the same mistake again what could be done. While doing math or physics you're not revolutionising the field's fundamentals too. You do the math learn how the universe works but surely It has many creative aspects, much more than history

Sheldon is actually wrong with the date when slavery was abolished. Congress first ratified the 13th amendment on December 6, 1865, legally ending slavery. The Emancipation Proclamation only declared all slaves in the confederate states as free, but not the ones who were in Union states like Kentucky, Missouri, Maryland and Delaware.

The proclamation was an executive order declaring the slaves of the belligerent states to be free. Lincoln did not control those states, ergo it was political rhetoric (it's a little more complicated than that, actually), and a damn fine piece too. Hence the need for the 13th amendment. This is a point Sheldon would likely have made, if his writers had known better.

Besides all of the people getting upset in the comments, here's the deal. It's well known that history is not simply facts placed perfectly on a nice timeline, they're open to all kinds of interpretation and new evidence discoveries that back up those insights. Sheldon is of course arrogant, that's just his nature. If you think about it, he doesn't like the humanities or anything much other than physics because he was molded by the people he grew up with. For instance, he got hurt by a girl that was aspiring to be a geologist, and there was an episode where he made fun of geology. For much the same reasons, something happened to where he made fun of engineers, probably from when he was disowned by NASA when he presented his idea for a safe rocket reentry program. It really starts to connect after a while.

Well, I guess it could be argued that the first attempt at freeing the slaves was the proclamation. All the slaves in confederate territory were freed, so technically speaking, Abe Lincoln did "free the slaves" in 1863. Even though the more significant attempt was in 1865.

In 1863 the slaves in the Union slave states were not free. The Emancipation Proclamation only said that as far as the Federal Government was concerned, slaves in the confederate lands were free.

Enslaved people have been un freeing themselves before, during, and after European colonialism. “The slaves were freed” implies they needed freeing when in fact they have also participated in their own liberation for centuries.
