Katana usually Bend when they’re not swung correctly. A little bit of off axis cutting will do that. It’s actually quite easy to bend a katana.

I'm Japanese, and learned Kendo, having DAN of course. Then one thing, if the KATANA got bended as cutting softer objects, that means the swing itself was not correctly done. He or she must learn how to match the plane of rotation and the Katana's blade direction, then draw , not push, the Katana as it's cutting movement.

A traditional katana will actually take a bend, you just bend it back. But honestly, yeah, that last bend was pretty significant down near the tang. My guess is that he didn’t get a great martensite transformation with his heat treat, so the edge wasn’t helping to keep the spine from bending way too much. Either that or he tempered it back too much, or both.

With a traditional katana, you only really have to worry about bends if it's poorly made, but yes, when it does bend, it won't return to true as a spring steel sword will.

Japanese iron was god awful. It came from the black sand and had to be folded thousands of times in an attempt to purify it as much as they could. Scandanavian blacksmiths had the same problems when trying to make a sword with iron from the Peat bogs. Its called Bog Iron. They would twist the red hot iron billet hundreds or even thousands of times to make a sword blade as pure at they could get it. That is why the classical viking sword was so expensive and rare when compared to their southern contemporaries.

Katanas are made to be light and very sharp to cut through bones while Longswords are made to be heavier and slightly blunter in order to crush bones
