Historical swords of that period were used to pierce chain mail and bash in skulls or helmets had to be sharp but bot too sharp as you'll lose your edge

Seriously, if he keeps up with it then in 5 years that kid will be unreal. He recognised the issues with the heat treat but probably due to time constraints took a couple of gambles that didn't pay off. Next time I hope he thinks to anneal the blade to reset the metal and work on the heat treats again.

This test is significant because historically, when medieval knights were attacked, it was usually by battering rams constructed of CCA pressure treated fence post. If their swords hadn't held up during these encounters it meant almost certain death for our honorable knights.

That young man was only 18 at the time, had never forged a sword before and made it to the third round of smiting competition; Will was correct when he said "The world is yours". I hope he comes back on the show in a few years to show how much he's grown.

The attitude of every runner up walking out of the forge is inspiring. Every other Tv competition show you see these people crying and whining about how they thought they got dissed. Definitely my favorite competition show to ever air.

You can see that the blade was not evenly heated at 1:11 (colder above tang and below tip). @Brisk XD If you mean the first skull smash, he hit that correctly, but the blade was not able to penetrate inside the skull and slid along it.

The best part about this series is when you've seen enough heat treats to know when a person hasn't heated their blade properly before they quench and you just know something will be wrong with it.

To be fair, the Arthurian legend is probably one of the most well-known world-wide, and anyone with an interest in Medieval times and Knights would likewise have an interest in the legend, and most of all the legendary sword from that very same legend.

Only 18 he's got nothing to be ashamed of, as a matter of fact he should be very proud of what he accomplished, very few 18 yr. olds would be able to make it to the final round, and considering he never made a sword before he now has some good OJT and has learned some valuable information on what not to do and what to do, from here on he will be flying skyward with no limit in sight! I predict a prosperous career ahead of this young man!
