make a drybag for the cameras out of the hammock, so that the camera case (stuffed with dry grass and sealed with tape) can become a pontoon for your raft. Ditto the backpack, of course. With pontoons, it wont' matter if you dont have a lot of local wood that will float well. You have to make that craft and paddle, cause you must be able to forage both sides of that river. Doing so takes at most 2 days, might be feasible in one day, if the materials are near to hand.

@genkiferal71782 жыл бұрын
I noticed one area where the black man caught a bunch of fish had a lot more grass in it. That grass makes water move more slowly and also provides environments for the fish's prey to live and places for fish to hide from predators such as birds or mammals. I am guessing, but had wondered the same thing. I lived on a creek for 20+ years and noticed the fish preferred water that didn't move too fast so that they didn't need to struggle to swim as much. They also need places to hide and lay eggs.

if the gillnet is made out of paracord, you can make it 10x bigger, by unraveling it, removing the outer sheathing of the paracord, and weaving the 11 inner strands. so the 44 sq ft becomes 400 sq ft of smaller strands. The required mesh size is 1.5". If you make it 4" mesh instead, tht make the netting 900 sq ft. Now, is there some reason why you "think" that 900 sq ft of netting is not 20x better than 44 sq ft of netting, hmm? If you need 2" mesh, simply fold the net over and tie every other mesh. Presto,2" mesh. If you find the 2" mesh to be a lot more efficient for you, then you take a segment of it, every day and into each 4" mesh, you weave a split of root, vine, reed, shoot, or strip of bark, rendering the mesh a 2" size. Now THAT is some "bushcraft" that can do something actually useful for you. The fact that fish can see it doen't matter when it's uses as a seine or baited weir. Weirs made of large stones have worked for eons and the fish can certainly see those big rocks! Such things work cause fish are dumb. They are barely aware of life. They can't reason anything. All they "know' really, is to avoid moving things larger than themselves.

what skill? If they had any brains, they;'d be making netting out of the 20x20 tarp and using it as seines and net-weirs. Take a commercial fisherman's rainsuit and the temp of the water will not be enough to keep you from wading in it.
@jackcarterog0016 жыл бұрын
Netting was made and didn't work. You can't catch what's not there. A commercial fisherman's rainsuit was not among the items they could choose from. The issue isn't really the cold of the water, but the CURRENT. As winter approaches, the fish supply dwindles to almost nothing. You talk a big game, but you have nothing to show for it except a filthy, bitchy mouth
@tashadeleon87216 жыл бұрын
you're wrong. It just says"rain suit, rain jacket. So you CAN take whatever type you want. NOBODY tried more than just a little bit of netting, what could be made out of the 130 ft of paracord. That's nothing. You can make 1500 sq ft of it out of just the 12x12 tarp and the ducttape and a LOT more out of the 20x20 tarp and the 2 person cotton rope hammoc. You have the same problem they have NIH syndrome and laziness. The fishing season being just 1 month long is WHY you have to make a lot of netting. fast. You can make 200 sq ft of a day, easily and every 500 ft of it, you can have a weir, 250 ft of it makes a seine.

you CAN last long enough to win, on "just" fish and cambium. It's just that you have to eat (and preserve) LOTS more of it than you "think". As in eat 4 lbs of fish and 2 lbs of cambium per day. The cambium has to be boiled, the water thrown out (it's full of turpentine) and then the cambium has to be fried in the fish oil. Only about half of a fish or animal's live weight is edible flesh, so you need to average catching 20 lbs of fish per day, so as to have 12 lbs, eat 6 lbs and preserve 6 lbs. You have about 2.5 months to do so, since they started in the summer time. it takes nearly 2 weeks to get set up. So figure catching 1200 lbs of live weight, having 700 lbs of actual food, eat half of it, store half of it. Then you can just hole up for the winter, in a grass-lined dugout, without a fire, for maybe 3.5 more months. A month after the first hard freeze, this show will be ended. Nobody's feeding themselves adequately.

it's easy to catch lots of mice. Weave a basket out of vines, line it with a chunk of tarp. Split about 2.5 ft of 1.5" OD sapling lengthwise, Use your shovel to notch the flats, making the wood into an easily climbed ramp, leading to the center top of the bucket. Fill the bucket about halway with water, Rig a 3/4" wide roller log across the top center of the bucket, with a 3" wide, 1/2' thick disk in the center of the roller. bait the edges of the roller (in notches) and the ramp with a mix of boiled, roasted cambirum and fishguts/head-oil. The mice fall in and drown. and the trap keeps on working, nothing to reset. Need fresh bait now and then.

man, that shallow river was perfect for putting a seine across it, then going upstream with another seine, moving it down to the first one, trapping all the fish therein. This would work very well, even if you could only partially reach across the river. you can make 2500 sq ft of netting out of the 20x20 ft tarp and half of the rope hammock. So you could also make baited net weirs, for both fish and waterfowl. yet nobody did so. duh.
@tashadeleon87216 жыл бұрын
all you need for a shelter, really, for 2-3 months, this season is 3 saplings bent over and a tarp staked out over them. And that's all you want to bother with, so you'll have energy and time to spend on the fishing, snaring, maybe a bit of bowhunting from a baited tree blind, as you weave more netting. If you DO make it into really cold weather, you want to be in a 4x4x8 ft dugout, stuffed with dried grass, so that you dont need to cut and haul firewood, breathing smoke and constantly at risk of having your gear burned.

net weirs work for you 24-7, in several different places at once. A couple of seines can take very fish in a segement of a small river or small creek. Stretch one net at a sandbar/narrowing of the body of water. Use vertical poles to help you move a second net downstream to the first net. Coop all the fish up in a corner, using a small segment of netting, while you re-fashion the nets into baited weirs for the night. YOu can eat `10 lbs of fish per day. Just keep them stewing. You can preserve some with a salty brine dip and then smoking/drying them on racks over a fire.. but that's risky and a huge pita. Some of them can be saved for a day or so, out in a net/pen in a deep part of the river. but I'd not risk much of my catch, nor much of my netting in that manner. On one drifting log and presto, your net and your catch are both gone.
@tashadeleon87216 жыл бұрын
Cut/tear the 20x20 tarp into 1/8" wide strips and make 4000 sq ft of 4" mesh netting out of it. You can make 200 ft per day of it, despite having to do all the other stuff that needs to be done, cause you can make it by firelight. Cut up the sheet hammock, use it to make the poncho and chaps, so that you can use the raiinsuit pants as a pontoon for the raft, and use the rainsuit jacket to carry and store water. Chunk of the hammock can make the water filter, and for later, in the dugout, holed up for the winter, the waste-container.

make a basket out of local vines/shoots,. Line it with a chunk of hammock or tarp. Create a roller stick across the top of this bucket. Bait the center of the stick. Mice crawl out onto the stick, it dumps them into the water int the bucket and they drown. or use the springy steel tines of the fishing arrowheads to trap mice. They can have lots of paracord, via a hammock, their belt, pack harness, tumpline, chest strap, and hip belt, They can have either a paracord or braided gillnet, which can be re-woven into lots more netting. 750 paracord is 11 inner strands. Do the math. Make it 4" mesh, and then weave in splits of local roots, vines, shoots, reeds, strips of bark, to make the mesh 2". It's not rocket science. The entire 20x20 tarp and the hammock can be cut/torn into 1/8" wide strips, so can about half of the 12x12 tarp.
