The way he was attempting to slash with those smallswords was painful. They are designed to mainly be for thrusting! not to say you can't cut with a smallsword, but as you saw it doesn't cut very efficiently as a longsword or falchion would. The same can be said for pretty much ANY thrust oriented swords.
@andywilson86985 жыл бұрын
The edged could and did cut to a degree. Cut with a edged smallswors are historically sound, but yeah the way he was doing it not so much . Primary purpose of a edged smallsword was to discourage or injure someone attempting to grab your weapon .

Depending on the shape of the blade, it could be impossible to bend at a 45 degree angle without having the sword stay bent. Not really a strength test more of a bend test.
@josephhunt12975 жыл бұрын
Well neither "smallsword" had a proper triangular blade geometry.
@nauticalgaming22565 жыл бұрын
Well it is actually a strength test, as with a small sword like that doing a normal striking test wouldn’t really prove it’s limits for several reasons, one of them being that there is not enough material to reliably test it that way. Actually, the strength test they did was much better because a lot of the finer cracks in the sword from improper heat treating would have shown up easier that way. Had they done a normal striking test, the smaller cracks wouldn’t really affect the blade.
@dandynoble28755 жыл бұрын
Strength is its ability to take force and maintain its shape without deforming. Hence, the blade that returned to true after being bent was the stronger one. Whether you bend something or break it, that still means it's weak.

Werent small swords historically dull? Like, they werent meant to cut, just thrust only. Hence the triangular blade?
@dovahbear05 жыл бұрын
Depends, from what I know there where blades like a diamond and could be sharpened. But I do believe most where the triangular design and just used for thrusting. Also there was a move called the flick I believe. Totally illegal in fencing competitions. But when used with a epee and small sword it could easily cut.
@TheLordArion5 жыл бұрын
Pretty much true. Some have edges and there are different Blade types. But even so, with that geometry and low mass, a smallsword will never be an effective cutter (compared to other types of swords). They are optimized for the thrust. And should realistically be really stiff and tough to flex, as to not lose penetrative power by flexing.
@doctorwhoEPICFAN5 жыл бұрын
History channel? being inaccurate or spreading misinformation? who'd have thought /s. on another note, this bugged me a ton and im glad im not the only one who noticed..
@edi98925 жыл бұрын
Smallswords branched off from the rapier family and thus many early versions had a flat diamond cross-section despite being pretty much useless in the cut (whereas some rapiers can even chop off a hand, or at least cut like a dagger). Later smallswords often had a flat V-crosssection (looks similar to the old flat diamond, but is lighter and yet still stiff enough) or a triangular one (best for thrusting, but doesn´t offer room for decorations). If you have a blade, even though it´s pretty useless in the cut, you might still want to sharpen it. That makes it a bit easier to thrust and it makes grabbing the blade more dangerous to the opponent. Also, with a sharp smallsword you can distract enemies by cutting their face...
@derekmelton5 жыл бұрын
Some were sharp. There’s a great book called The Smallsword in England that details some variations on it. When I was tasked to make the smallsword for this episode one of the parameters was that the blade had to be sharp, at that point it doesn’t matter much what was historically accurate, you gotta do it or fail. :)
