@@Shepp420 Rick has been doing pawning for over 20 years, and will often have a good idea on how much an item is going to sell for. Customers are free to reject his offers and shop around. Don't forget, Rick is taking the risk by buying the items. You sell it to him, he is stuck with it. It may take him days to sell it, or years.

There was no good production, mining or people using the coin by then like now specially since the prices were so diferent then so a single of those gold coins were enough to feed a family for a months or even months. Aso sometimes coins got lost, damaged or melted in other coins since they were made with precious materials and it has been a thousand of yerars. The only reason the usa coin worth more is because it was made and be sold in usa at a important years for the usa history.

My God, A coin that the expert said he could get about $15,000.00 for he agrees to sell for only $8,000.00. That's a loss of $7,000.00. There is always a market for extremely rare and valuable coins. What a fool he was for being suckered like that - unless of course he stole it, or possibly was selling it for someone else who obtained it illegally. Then he made out alright.

If I’m taking the risk then I need to ensure I have a reasonable profit margin. If you have 2 people bidding on the coin at auction they could run it up over 20k if they really want it or there can be only one person that really wants it and it only goes up to 8k and after auction fees and your time going to the auction you lost a few grand. Some auctions don’t allow a reserve price. if you want quick cash you will almost never get close to what you want. If you want all the money try to sell it on line or at auction but you will be taking a risk, many auctions don’t let you have a reserve price. I’ve lost thousands at auctions and made thousands. If I paid full price like everyone wants I’d be broke. People have no idea the costs involved running a business and selling items.

@@Locutus All he has to do is apply to an auction show. Sure the auction is going to take 10%/15% of the total sale, but I bet he would have made more money that way.

60% of the appraised value is a fair asking price. If I was the seller of the coin, I wouldn't go anything below 9,000 and it leaves room for profit for the pawn shop because there is no guarantee they'll get 15,000

A lot of people don’t know how easy it is to actually sell those coins. Yeah it might take you longer to do so, but at the end of the day, you’ll have 15k instead of 8k

People make fun of Rick, but he's a fantastic negotiator. He always offers less than he'd actually want to pay, either they accept it like an idiot, or Rick raises the price, making the seller think they 'tricked' him. Genius.
