Basically, the DEA and CIA (because, as explained in this video, Congress refused for them to fund the Contras) may have looked the other way, to say the least, while the Contras were literally flooding US borders with cocaine. There was so much cocaine (which is an expensive drug that poor Americans could not afford to pay for) that dealers had to cut it : crack was born. The rest is history.

What is never mentioned is the fate of the officers that served under Oliver North in the Pentagon. After the investigation, those officers that were found to have work knowingly with North about the illegal acts were court martialed and discharged. The others that didn't know what illegal acts were being conducted, and didn't report the irregularities up the chain of command were found guilty of dereliction of duty and dropped to the bottom of the promotion list, thus effectively ending their military career. Oliver North acted in collusion with the President to commit an illegal act, became a hero to many and destroyed the careers of the officers around him.

Iran-Contra Special Prosecotor , Lawrence Walsh - a name lost to History Channel in the mists of time - wrote a book about his experience in that role called "Firewall". In the book he describes the numerous roadblocks placed in his path by all three branches of govt; the administration and its justice department, the federal judiciary itself and Congress, which was either partly or wholly controlled by the Democrats during that period. In fact, the greatest handicaps to the original investigation were set in place by Congress when it granted immunity to those witnesses who testified before their committees. They could still be prosecuted for lying or for crimes that Congress hadn't touched, but admitted major violations could not be pushed on the basis of that testimony. Among several matters that Walsh and his team were prevented from investigating by congressional stipulation was military supplies to Iran prior to 1986! Neither the Democrats (with a few exceptions) nor the Republicans wanted to see Iran-Contra fully investigated. That would have unearthed far too many of the CIA's, MI6's and Mossad & LAKAM's skeletons. After Clinton took office in 1993 it was he and his loyalists in Congress who brought the official 1980 October Surprise investigation to a halt.

I mean, technically he didn't have anything to do with it, but that depends on your viewpoint. If you're willing to accept the fact that both investigations found nothing that could tie him to it (in the sense that he knew all the details), then he was innocent. If you want to dig up something and try to blame it all on alzheimers and the fact that he was nearing the end of his term, then you could say he was guilty (but you'd still have no concrete evidence). Considering the fact that congress was controlled by Democrats at the time (mind you, dems that hated Reagan) they would've tried as hard as they could to dig something up on him and if they couldn't do it, I don't think there really was anything. The most important thing is that whether or not he had anything to do with it, he took full responsibility for it. Anyway, he's dead, most of the other people are dead, so why waste the time trying to prove something you can't?

Left out the bit that went............The plan was for Israel to ship weapons to Iran, for the United States to resupply Israel, and for Israel to pay the United States. Which led to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) finding that the U.S. had encouraged violations of international humanitarian law by assisting paramilitary actions in Nicaragua.

Reagan's delegating of many details to underlings worked to his benefit here. He could plausibly say that he knew nothing of what they were doing. I think he probably did but unlike Nixon he didn't tape his conversations so we don't know for sure.

Note: Reagan's Attorney General investigated Reagan's OWN administration. Prime example of the need for an independent Justice Department, not one directed toward revenge against the president's political opponents.

My mom was a contra - per her they were freedom fighters.. because the government was evil.. but as I’ve grown older I’ve been more apt to learn and question everything I’ve been taught. I know the sandinistas tortured many and tried to kill my grandparents on the street .. I’ve had to educate my mother on the crack era and it’s relation to them. It’s crazy to grow up and question if you’ve been taught to be proud of something that may or may not be true. Or a truth mixed in with lies
