@Evanimas Rich guy could afford to restart because proper equipment gives that luxury in the form of reduced labor for results. I didn't watch this full episode, but based on what we see here, that rich guy had a proper forge to heat up the blade while the other guy was using coal which has a significant disadvantage such as heating up the sword evenly... He took the risk because he had no choice to if we are being honest with ourselves and even if he did start over, using coal as the method of heat treating, chances are it would have the same result. This is not to say he shouldn't have restarted anyways, considering he absolutely knew it was soft in one of the most important parts of the blade.

Fahrenheit 451 The problem here is that the other guy isn’t measurable more talented than him, at least from this video. Success does not imply talent when you win off of better equipment. I would beat Usain Bolt at the 100 meter dash every time if I started fifty meters away from the finish line. The race is inherently stacked against him because he has to run twice my speed, and then some to beat me. That is not hard work, that’s just stupid.

Allaan Snackbar how long did it take them to make those swords? That is like telling two people to plow a field in a couple days, one with their hands and another with a tool. Then, you criticize the guy using his hands for losing because ancient people managed to do it. If you think experience matters more than equipment you have absolutely no clue how anything works. It doesn’t matter if Hand-Guy was a farmer his whole life. I would beat him if you gave me a tractor, even if I had no clue how to drive the thing. I always enjoy seeing people in their home forges when they are straight up bare bones. Dudes forge is literally a pile of coal on the ground haha. I remember there was a guy in his backyard whos forge was a satellite dish over an old trailer and found a bunch of piece he used from a junk yard.

I know how everyone is saying there is a "wage disparity". End of the line though, the guy who got sent off cut a corner while the guy who won made double sure that he put forward a blade that was solid. To the point of making TWO blanks that he then tested for quality. The guy who walked cut a corner and compromised his blade structure by not setting himself up for success. (It would not have been difficult to make a small "dark room" to better see the heat levels of his blade during the heat treat. He could easily have taken that trailer in the background and flipped it to make a covered pit.) His blade broke where he KNEW there was a soft spot. Lets all be honest here, if his blade had been fully treated properly, he likely would have won 'cause we all know how the judges hate heavy and clunky weapons, and his opponent had a heavier and clunkier weapon. He didn't lose because of a plasma cutter (which NO I do not agree with using also) or money, he lost because he chose to leave a weak spot on his blade and hoped for the best. Also remember, Ryu WON while using a Satellite dish as a forge. It was all in work ethic, not tools.

I could watch John all day. He's so smooth and professional. This whole episode was amazing and it was obvious he was going to win even in round 1. This quick 10 mins doesn't tell the whole story at all.

The use of the home forge really undermines the fairness of the competition Most people can't afford a CNC machine... Its really kind of wrong to reward someone with $10000 just because they were already richer than the other guy...
