The Roman conquest of Celtic Britain is halted in 60 AD when Boudica, Queen of the Iceni tribe of Celtic Britain, leads a massive revolt against Roman occupation. From Roman Colchester to London, the rebels leave destruction in their wake, shaking the resolve of Emperor Nero, until the Britons face off against the mighty Roman legionaries at what would become known as the Battle of Watling Street.
Boudica is also often referred to as Boadicea or Boudicca.

Id definitely say Queen Boudica's side were the "good guys" here. They were fighting against imperialism and the destruction of their lands and people, and the queen herself was avenging her family, especially her tortured daughters, and herself. @@zippyparakeet1074 Well actually the odds were even worse it’s said that her army swelled to over hundred thousand by the time she fought her final battle with lower estimates being eighty thousand. The Roman army however only numbered just under 10,000 so the odds was more like 10 to 1 or if you want to be generous 8 to 1 and the first field battle he mentioned that Boudicca won he didn’t even mention that that force only numbered 2000 to Boudicca’s 80,000 so 40 to 1 definitely not a great commander.

If you're looking for an excellent novel on the Iceni Revolt, Beric the Briton by G. A. Henty does an excellent job of explaining and portraying the historic settings, battles, and persons involved through the eyes of a fictional character. One of my all time favorite books.

I studied classics and particularly focused on Nero in college, so this was a nice treat. I really appreciate the acknowledgement at 4:22 that there are only two main literary sources for this history, and that both of them put words in the mouths of the important figures (especially the Britons) for their own rhetorical purposes to criticize and comment on contemporary issues. This can get overshadowed when people cover the rebellion, taking everything at face value. Though admittedly Tacitus' invented speeches are pretty damn good. I will say, though, that the passage of Tacitus' Annals concerning Nero's persecution of Christians in the aftermath of the Great Fire in 64 AD (10:22 on in the video) is and has been a fierce topic of debate among historians for a long time, despite only being about 154 words long. In short, there's considerable doubt about whether the passage was actually written by Tacitus at all, with possibilities ranging from misinterpretation to a deliberate fabrication by a later writer. My understanding is that the most likely scenario is that Tacitus wrote of *a* group being scapegoated for causing the fire, and a later Roman author, compiler, or similar assumed he meant Christians and added in specifics. Or, less charitably, it may be that a Roman *Christian* made it out to be Christians in order to fit the Christian ideal of martyrdom and act as a sort of catalyst for later Roman persecution of Christians that is much better evidenced. There's a great discussion of this issue in all its complexity in Anthony Barrett's "Rome is Burning: Nero and the Fire that Ended a Dynasty," which is also just an excellent read in general.

Thanks. Yes, had to make sure to mention the somewhat unreliable narrators we have to rely on! With regard to Tacitus, it is almost the scholarly consensus that the passage is authentic and consistent with other contemporary accounts, and likely lent credence by the general disdain Tacitus holds for Christians e.g., he possibly references the “cannibal” trope (“abominations”) applied to Christians with regard to consumption of the Eucharist, which we might not expect a Christian forgery to include when attempting to portray Christianity positively. Tacitus is generally anti-Nero, though, and, as you said, Christian writers would have a motive to emphasize martyrdom, but I ultimately don’t think there’s enough evidence behind the interpolation theory. At any rate, always willing to have my mind changed if new information arises.

I for one think it is real, simply because a fabrication would be better and more detailed? If fabricated the writers would have fixed the inaccuracies and anti Christian context of the text, for example Jesus is mis named he's called Christus where as a medieval Scribe would have called him Christus Jesus. The Christians are labeled as having horrible vices and being loathsome no zealous Monk writing in a Monastery wishing to embellish history by altering an ancient document would dare refer to Martyrs in this manner these are people he would have idolized. To refer to them as such at that time would be like asking a modern day Muslim to frame the Charlie Hebdo comics of Muhammad, it just wouldn't happen. If it was faked the description would have been more pro Christian more proud of the martyrs and sorrowful aswell. Tacitus has just the right amount of information to not quit know who these obscure Christians are but just enough official state propaganda to blame them as the guilty party. Plus, the only people who seem to have a problem with the passage are people who are vehemently anti Christian and wish to disavow Christ very existence plenty of non Christian scholars have labeled it genuine. So the only explanation is that the Monks who originally copied the Manuscript for posterity were professionals who copied the work word for word as Tacitus wrote it, this for the scribes was an act of devotion that we have many examples of so much history was saved because these men and women sat for hours coping these documents by candle light many went blind doing it. We should be grateful for their sacrifice and learn from it we don't have the right or standing to question them after all what great deed have we done that compares with the saving of knowledge....

Incredible video! I remember learning a lot about Boudica in school, growing up in Suffolk. My only tiniest criticism is there are no large hills in East Anglia as depicted in some of the artwork! (The artwork is outstanding though!) Great work!

As a Korean, I believe my country has a wealth of great historical stories, from the greatest admiral in history - Yi Sun Shin to the great Goguryeo conquest of Tang China. Koreans have proven their independence time and time again against much larger and powerful foes for much of our history and would be an exciting story to tell.

9 years, I seem to remember. But far more of a badass than the mass murderer who lasted a few weeks after breaking a deal with the Romans. Betrayed by a British queen for financial and political advantage. I think his story was the nucleus of the Arthur myth.

If I were now being handed over as one who had surrendered immediately, neither my fortune nor your glory would have achieved brilliance. It is clear that Caractacus had learned perfect Latin at an early age, as would be expected of a king who had dealings (diplomatic and trade) with the Romans before the invasion.

She was only remembered by the Romans. The British forgot about the mass murderer and loser within a few generations. She was not mentioned in Britain again until 1568, when Humphrey Llwyd wrote a history of Britain and used the information from Tacitus and Cassius Dio.

I grew up in Norfolk where the Iceni were based and with the story of Boudicca. I don't consider myself a patriot or anything but this story still gives me goosebumps

Don’t really see what is patriotic or not about Boudicca. Different time, different group of people(at least compared to the sort of “base” English group(Germanic), major Celtic ancestry as well though, obviously the Iceni don’t really “exist” anymore) and she supposedly massacred random civilians and lost majorly. Justified rebellion to be honest, but handled very poorly.
