Humorously known as the man who could never find the perfect situation to attack, Joseph E. Johnston was loved by his men, but criticized by his contemporaries, like Jefferson Davis. Nevertheless, Johnston was the highest ranking United States officer to join the Confederacy and he commanded both of the Confederacy's principle field armies, the Army of Northern Virginia and the Army of Tennessee.

Joe Johnston, I think his much maligned image deserves further assessment other than just a general whose skills show chiefly when in retreat. I reckon this series will be as interesting and enlightening as the one about Rosecrans, thanks for these videos Dr. Wilder.

Thanks for these deep dives. So many opinions are formed just upon things people have "picked up over the years". Of course, we all have our views, but thanks to your work, we can have "informed" views. Always a plus for History buffs.

Joseph Johnston was a Bigader General in a staff position, not a feild General. The rank was a brevet award for his service. His feild rank was that as Colonel. Therfore he was the same feild rank of Albert Sidney Johnston and Robert Edward Lee. Therefore he was not the ranking feild officer. Samuel Cooper who did resign was a feild Bridger General. Please understand this historical fact. Other than this you were accurate.

I would say that if there was one place where he launched a powerful attack it has to be first Manassas.

Outstanding!! I eagerly look forward to each of your well done, entertaining, and informative biographies of the U.S. Civil War generals. I hope you are considering doing one of your biographies on General John B. Gordon from Thomaston, GA. I think its fair to say that of the generals in that war that had no previous military training, he would have very few equals.

They weren't traitors. Sorry to tell you that. They actually were trying to continue the old government of states rights. Which was a much better system than we have today. Apart from slavery it was a good system. There was little if any national debt. The states planned their own spending. The Government wasn't really centralized till after the civil war. The North could not survive without the richest part of the country.

@@volslover1504sorry to break it to you. They absolutely were traitors. They fought against a country they swore to defend and protect. And they fought for the confederacy which existed only to spread slavery.

He was no traitor, remember this; soon we too as modern citizens will out of necessity pick loyalties based on where home is for us. As a Virginian myself, I understand why he chose to side with his native state as opposed to the federal government. One day you and I may be throwing that very insult at one another, calling someone a traitor is difficult to justify and even harder to apologize for…
@volslover1504
@volslover1504 Ай бұрын
@@benjaminjarrett9816 I agree sir. Unfortunately the victors wrote the history to justify their actions. What I learned in school, which is what the government wanted us to know is not the whole truth. When you dive deep into reading and researching for yourself there is a whole new picture to see.
