Grant's victory at Chattanooga, which resulted in lifting the Confederate siege of Union forces there, and routing Bragg's army from Lookout mountain, and Missionary Ridge, was another highlight of U.S. Grant's military career. It all started by Union forces on barges heading down the Tennessee River to take Brown's Ferry, which opened up the famous Cracker Line, which brought much needed supplies to the starving Union troops in Chattanooga and reinforcements. Grant in a way was master of the Western theater. 🇺🇲

This video made me realize how many men who were involved in this western battle also took part in the battle of Gettysburg. And that’s both sides. Learned something new every day.

Bragg was an utter fool, once the city was able to be resupplied both by river and land, maintaining his position was not only pointless, but actively idiotic as it kept his army overextended, and it would only grow weaker and more exposed with time while the Union army would grow in strength exponentially. Bragg was the single greatest asset to the Union cause in the Civil War.

Why did the presenter ignore the operations of Hookers men against the Confederate left? Hookers three divisions crossed Chattanooga Creek captured Rossville and flanked the whole Rebel line. One division advanced north along the cr😮est of Missionary ridge, one along the eastern and one along the western slope. Holzclaws brigade was destroyed, Breckinridge's son and adjutant were captured, and Breckinridge himself barely escaped. All while sherman (with half the Army under his command) dithered!

At Chattanooga, full credit must be given to Union Generals William Tecumseh Sherman, who served with Grant all thru the Western theater. Chattanooga was the last battle they fought in together, For Grant was sent east to deal with Lee and took command of all Union armies, while Sherman commanded all Union forces in the West. General George Thomas "The Rock of Chickamauga " For making his stand on Snodgrass hill allowing Rosecrans army to escape. General Joseph Hooker redeemed himself after his embarrassing defeat at Chancellorville, and so did Burnside. 🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲

Sherman got his *** handed to him by Gen Cleburne at Tunnel Hill. Grant wanted his drinking buddy to get some credit, but Sherman was never at his best when the odds were anywhere near even.

Well, despite Sherman getting repulsed by Cleburne at Tunnel Hill, that really was the only setback as Bragg's army was routed from Missionary Ridge from Grant's army who charged without orders and the Confederate siege was lifted. This was Grant's and Sherman's last battle together. For soon Grant received orders to go east to take command of all union armies and placing Sherman in command of all union forces in the West. Sherman, in my opinion, was the best choice for 20 years earlier he visited North Georgia and learned the terrain, from rivers, mountains, towns. This information served Sherman well as he made plans towards taking the Crucial railroad town of Atlanta. Using the western and Atlantic railroad as his main supply starting at Chattanooga to Atlanta, He used to keep his over 100,000 men and 40,000 animals fed every day. I'm sure Grant could rely on Sherman than Roscrans, who embarrassed himself at Chickamauga. Only George Thomas "The Rock Of Chickamauga " who made a brave stand at Snodgrass hill, and helped Roscrans army get away. Confederate General Joe Johnson, in command of Confederate forces in Georgia defending Atlanta, didn't have the manpower to deal with Sherman and he continually outflanked Johnson forcing him to withdraw and retreat time and time again to where he was at the gates of Atlanta. Jefferson Davis feared Johnson would give up Atlanta without a fight so he relieved Johnson with the agreesive John Bell Hood. In desperation, Hood attacked Sherman at Peachtree creek with no success. Two days later, Hood attacked again: the battle of Atlanta, fought east of the city, But Sherman's army stood their ground. After a 5 week artillery bombardment of Atlanta, which did little, Sherman eventually cut all 4 rail lines that was supplying Hood's army in Atlanta. The final rail line was cut above Jonesboro, GA and the gig was up for Hood, who evacuated Atlanta which union forces occupied. 🇺🇲

True, the point being that Grant intended his punk General Sherman to earn some glory and it backfired. Shame Cleburne wasn't in charge of the Army of the Tennessee.

Joe Johnston, "The Grand Retreater" had a enough of a reinforced and supplied army to stop Sherman cold. Johnston's forces were just under 70K, but Johnston didn't have the nerve for battle or the ability to command. A Cleburne or Forrest could have sent Sherman packing.

And if I'm less than charitable about Sherman it goes to his psychopathic treatment of civilians. Even the British refrained from burning down cities and mistreating women and children during the colonial war of secession.
