After the Battle of the Wilderness, Ulysses S. Grant, George Meade, and the Union Army of the Potomac disengaged with Robert E. Lee's Confederate Army of Northern Virginia and began to move toward Spotsylvania Court House. What resulted was the bloodiest battle of the Overland Campaign. In this episode, the battle wraps up as Ulysses S. Grant begins to move the Army of the Potomac southward.

Great video! A really nice job of breaking down the tactical movements to fire on both sides. Well done sir. I live about a half an hour from Spotsylvania Courthouse Battlefield. I can tell you, it's one of the best preserved battlefields this side of Gettysburg. Well worth the visit. But all over Northern Virginia, the reaver's blade of the developer is knocking at the door. I've watched many former battlefields be transformed into gas stations, chain restaurants, strip malls, parking lots, and subdivisions. If you want to preserve places like this battlefield, consider donating to American Battlefield Trust and Central Virginia Battlefield trust. They will preserve this hallowed ground so it's available for our children and grandchildren.

I made it all the way to the last 4 minutes before the grandkids woke up, and like baby birds, they were chirping for breakfast. What a great video about our history, the brutality of war, and the men who fought for our freedom. Thank you sir !

Outstanding video! The amount time and effort to put this together must be acknowledged. The maps and animation were superb. I have a relative who was a Private who served with the Union Amry with VI Corp (Wright), 3rd Brigade (Ricketts), 106th NY Volunteer Infantry Regiment, Company I. I watched the video twice. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to see the NY 106th deployed. My own research shows that the NY 106th was included in the order of battle. Can you provide any additional information on the deployments of the 106th? Once again, great job!

Congratulations. A great deal of work went into the depiction of the movements -- May 12 was amazingly helpful to understanding

The Civil War is a mystery to me. How men can do such things to each other is beyond my understanding. I have seen Grant called a “butcher” because of this and other battles. You have to have a strong will to see men killed and maimed along with all of the other brutality and then continue on. I don’t believe that Grant was any more of a “butcher” than Lee was. Lee, himself, said that he knew that they could not win the war but that he had to let them learn that fact for themselves. What a terrible waste of life and responsibility for massive suffering. I believe that the war would have ended much sooner if Lincoln had not had the most unwilling of Generals from the beginning. It was not until Grant and Sherman did the most difficult of brutal deeds in order to end the war that tide of the war turned.

The only drawback of the war ending early might have been the continuation of slavery.

Looks like the Union caught the worst of it at Spotsylvania. Poor 2nd Corps caught hell because Grant and Mead put too much confidence in Hancock the Magnificent, and his troops were always the ones who made the charge.

General Nathan Bedford Forrest would have likely turned the tide quickly in the Confederate's favor. Just his specialty. Up close, violent, hand-to-hand combat in what was the Mule Shoe/Salient nightmare. Lee's missed opportunity. Another great video, Doc.

There is no reason to believe he would have made a difference. I don’t understand why people act like he is some kind of god. He is a competent Calvary commander Highly overrated

@@hw260 He was better than just a competent cavalry commander, but his participation there wouldn't have changed the trajectory of the campaign as a whole. The South was irrevocably losing.

Forrest was an idiot, but he had heart. To suggest he would have turned the tide of this battle is laughable.
