Thanks of this. My Grandmother was a nurse here from 1954-1980 and very likely knew Joy. My mother also did part of her training there as a junior nurse in the early 60’s, - she had some horrendous stories.

So many happy memories off working there. I started there in June 76 and stayed till there was a fire around the early 80's. All the patients were moved to other units and sadly never reopened.

Great. Way better than I was expecting. I came to this after re-reading Bill Bryson's account of him working at the Sanatorium during the seventies. (The nurse really added a lot. She was charismatic and spoke well).

Lovely to see Joy talking about the many-she and her family were neighbours and my Dad Ronnie Jones and Mum Ross Jones were both nurses during the 50s60s70s when mUm worked at the Day Hospital which was pioneering treatments for phobia and anxiety.

Really enjoyed this video, both the interesting medical history and seeing the architecture. I learned about Holloway from reading a book by Bill Bryson "Notes from a Small Island". He describes working there in the 70s and mentions that the building was damaged by a fire in 1980. Looks like it was expertly repaired?

My boyfriend was sectioned and placed in Holloway in 1968. His problems were drug related, mainly due to LSD use. I clearly recall the day I went there to visit him. It was an impressive building. I remember being taken by a male nurse through several doors, all of which were double locked. Peter was in a good mood and showed me his room, and also introduced me to the other residents. I expected to find them quite weird and, being only 17, was a bit nervous being among these people. What surprised me was how normal they all seemed. We reunited when he was discharged several months later. He went on to lead a normal life. However, I do know he was given electric shock therapy, which seems a bit barbaric. It was an interesting day in my life.

My father went there as a houseboy in approximately 1935, was called up for war service in 1940, I assume he returned after the war until he took up a post at St Francis hospital Haywards Heath in the 1950s
