The people held mass meetings in favour of Reform during 1830-32, then when the Reform Act enfranchised the utilitarian middle classes, the House of Commons imposed on the working classes the New Poor Law Act. This replaced the ancien regime's Speenhamland system, which was much more generous to the poor. History is full of ironies.

I’ll be honest I came searching for this after watching Enola Holmes. I couldn’t figure out why the gma was against the reform act. But it’s all clear... political power. She wanted the family to remain powerful. And it was crazy because she was old as dirt. But it just goes to show how important family preservation meant in the those days and possibly before.... smh 🤦🏽‍♀️

That was a different reform law they were talking about Im pretty sure. Later in the century. The Sherlock Holme stories are late 19th century
