Paraguay during World War II

During World War II, Paraguay maintained a stance of neutrality, similar to many other countries in South America. Despite not actively participating in the conflict, Paraguay did play a role in certain aspects of the war and experienced some internal and external pressures related to the global conflict. Paraguay declared its neutrality at the outset of World War II and remained neutral throughout the conflict. This neutrality was largely maintained due to the desire to avoid the economic and social disruptions that participation in the war could bring. Paraguay maintained diplomatic relations with both the Axis and Allied powers during the war. While it did not join the Allies officially, it did express sympathy for the Allied cause and maintained trade relations with countries such as the United States. The war had significant economic repercussions for Paraguay, as it disrupted global trade and led to fluctuations in commodity prices. Paraguay's economy, primarily based on agriculture, was affected by changes in international markets and trade routes. Paraguay had a significant population of German immigrants, and there were concerns about Nazi sympathizers operating within the country. However, the Paraguayan government took measures to monitor and control any potential subversive activities. Paraguay's position in South America influenced its role during the war. It maintained relations with neighboring countries and navigated regional dynamics while avoiding direct involvement in the conflict.

hi, i am both things you mention, a Paraguayan with german heritage and my grandfather was first generation German Paraguayan who fought in the chaco war, he was born in Paraguay in 1912, but he was also part of the paraguayan Hitler Jugen, but he did assimilated, in fact most people who established in San Bernardino, assimilated into society, i cant say the same of people from hohenau, but i seen indigenous who became amish tho

Gracias por llenar esos huecos de nuestra historia que normalmente no se habla acá, respecto a lo que pasaba en paraguay durante la segunda guerra mundial e inclusive corria el rumor de que hitler supuestamente no se habia suicidado, sino trasladado a Hohenau. Este hecho fue luego desmentido gracias a la confirmación del suicidio de hitler en su búnker. Los Estados Unidos nos forzaron a atravesar la dictadura más larga de Latinoamérica (casi 35 años) y existen profundas grietas hasta hoy en dia en la cultura nacional debido a este suceso. El actual presidente de la República, Santiago Peña, parece ser un títere del exmandatario Horacio Cartes, asi como Alfredo Stroessner era un títere de los Estados Unidos. Tenemos mucho todavia por madurar, nuestra independencia de España fue en 1811 pero nuestra constitución nacional es de 1992. Paraguay es un pais que sufre hoy en dia mucho por ser uno con los índices más altos de corrupción y desigualdad. Todavia hay un largo camino pero como dice la canción: "¡Patria querida, somos tu esperanza, somos la flor de un bello por venir!"

Paraguay, like Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil, had a large population of German immigrants. This made it easier for escaping Nazis to hide there. President Stroessner of Paraguay was of German descent.

Interesting Fact: The Paraguay Navy ordered two river gunboats of the Humaitá-class from Italy. Both vessels saw active service during the Chaco War, and the 1947 Paraguayan civil war. Today both are preserved today.

In the early '80's I met some Mormon missionaries that returned from their assignments. A couple of guys had been to Paraguay. One day they were on their bicycles in a rural area. They hear a loud horn behind them. They watched the local people get off the road into the drain ditches on the sides. A jeep with a man at a machine gun went by first. A troop truck was next. 3 Mercedes Benz 600 series limousines came next. Another troop truck and another armed jeep. The line of vehicles did not slow down. The missionaries ask the locals if that was a high member of government,etc.... The answer: "Los Allemaines". "The Germans".

Very interesting. During World War One the US government similarly suppressed the German element within the United States similar to their efforts in Paraguay -- long before the Nazi WW2 era. The Prohibition Act banning beer and alcohol in 1919 was largely an anti-German measure. 😮

Paraguayan here. Small correction: Estigarribia did not hold a positive view on fascism. In one speech he did in Uruguay in 1936 during a brief exile during the February Revolution of Colonel Franco (they were both nationalists but had beef with each other because of some stuff that happened during the cold war), Estigarribia said the following words: "America became free at the dawn of liberal democracy, and thanks to it and in it it has its political-social habitat and the guarantee of its future. If we suppress from our America the empire of freedom with the implementation of any of the extreme tendencies in conflict in our days [fascism and Soviet communism], we will have suppressed the best armor of respect that it had". Colonel Arturo Bray, Paraguayan ambassador to Franco's Spain between 1939-1941 (assigned by Estigarribia), wrote a book called "Spain with his arm raised" in which he mentions that he had to defend the figure of Estigarribia from the Francoist press. Despite of that, good video. 95% accurate, I would say.

May I make another comment? You might be aware of the very pro-German, but not necessarily pro-Nazis element originating from my dear homeland....I am speaking of the Mennonite immigrants to Paraguay who came from Canada. They were disappointed about the take over of the schools that they themselves had built by the Canadian government after WWI (rightly so if you ask me!). The most conservative and also the not so conservative in the Mennonite communities moved to Paraguay. Sadly some got there just in time for the Chaco War. Others arrived later. Some even came via Mexico where they had lived for a time before the situation there got difficult. It is a very multifaceted immigration history. They have had a great economic impact on Paraguay, particularly the Chaco, but I do not think that many were Nazi sympathizers, just very pro-German, if one can make such a distinction.

My dad was in the U S navy during ww2 he was on a a lite cruiser that did a sortie down to the Straits of Magellan looking for a German commerce raider on the way back they stopped in Chile and Ecuador , they were not really welcome , they were very sympathetic to nazi

I'm Brazilian! Make a video about Brazil in World War II. Getúlio Vargas played an obtuse role until he decided to fight for the Allies. The south of Brazil had many immigrants from Europe, such as germans and italians, when WW2 began and there was a lot of support for the Axis. I would also like to comment that because of the internet, the Paraguayan War is being remembered more and more by brazilians. For the reasons of genocide practiced and also for the economic effort of the war. The empire entered in crisis and was later replaced by a republic.

I ask this because my grandfather (who fought in WWI) immigrated to Guatemala in 1923 due to the encouragement of the German government after WWI. Great, Stefan....But what do you mean by "Other than many Italians" at 4:42.....That could be understood in two different ways - namely the Italians did assimilate or like the Germans, they did not. Would you care to clarify? I could cite cases of assimilation and cases against assimilation in both ethnic minorities. In the case of the Germans, religion played a major role. German Protestants were less likely to assimilate into a Roman Catholic majority, although they certainly participated economically.

I was in Paraguay. Traveling to the Chaco was not really possible. There is no tourist infrastructure, private tours cost a fortune and I don't have a car. I skipped this one.

1. Estigarribia changed the Constitution into a Fascist constitution. 2. Germans were present in Paraguay since the XVIth century. They came as part of don Pedro de Mendoza's expedition, because at the time, Charles V/I was Holy Roman Emperor and king of Spain. The first chronicle of the conquest was written in German, by one of those soldiers, the Bavarian Ulrico Schmidl. 3. Many German speaking Jesuits came until the XVIIs. 4. There has always been a great affinity between Paraguayans and Germans. That was one reason Dr. Frost's experiment (Nueva Germania) failed: German men intermarried with Paraguayan women. 5. Rochmann died in Asunción by chance. He was living a pauper in Clorinda, Argentina, and crossed over to Asunción to get medical attention at the Hospital de Clínicas, where he died. 6. Mengele lived in Argentina, but he travelled around the Paraná basin selling agricultural equipment produced by his family back in Germany. He did not live in Paraguay. He visited often, mainly for business.

The most significant longterm effect WW ll had on Paraguay, was that it led to lasting US involvement & cooperation: arrival of military missions, development aid, financial credits, and later on in the 50's the construction of what was then the biggest US Embassy in South América in Asunción, Paraguay. According to an old danish friend of mine who went to school in Asunción during WW ll, most of the military officers had some admiration for the Wehrmacht, as President Morinigo himself admitted in his later memoirs. Fortunately he was a pragmatic who realized the longterm benefits of siding with the US & the Allies, declaring war on Nazi Germany, as did all countries on the Ameican Continent. A positive outcome of WW ll was that it lead to much more interamerican cooperation like in the Organisation of American States OAS & the Interamerican Development Bank.

You should have shown more historical military sites while you were in Country, this was a wasted effort for just a report from your hotel room, so I voted you down for that aspect. For the military wargamer's out there, Decision Games #86 is a game about this, XTR also did a packet folio game about it in 1974 and Osprey published a Men-At-Arms Series about it in 2011. And Command Magazine also did a reprinted update of the XTR version in 1991.

Brazilian here. Solano Lopez (the son) decided to invade Brazil going against his father`s advise. Solano´s army promoted sistematic crimes against Brazilian local population includind murders, rapes and of all kinds of brutality. It took years of fierce fight to repel Paraguai`s invasion. After we manage to repel Paraguay`s invasion we went after Solano himsef. He was killed in combat by a Brazilian Marine who went under the nick name of Zeca Diabo.

US intel and assorted nazi's were all over South America before, during and after the war. Thank you for your research. WWII is invariably focused on panzers. Having studied the wars since the 1960's understand that they represented about 1% of WWII. Few on KZbin or anywhere offer research on post war Germany under USAFE rule. Few understand that Germany was eliminated as a state just like Japan. Please add that to your list of to do's if possible! Thanks again!

Just one more data for your research. It was Brazil, not Paraguay or Argentina or Chile the country who took more of the German diaspora. But not all Germans were nazis. Most os the nazis - yes - went Argentina, but in Southern part of Brazil, many many tunnels were discovered in the last decades, including a massive one close to the Triple Border.

some countries were sympathetic to the Axis - God knows why they would think someone like Hitler would be a good friend to them - and anti-Allies. it was necessary for the Allies, particularly Great Britain to nudge them in the right direction. when the British ambassador in Egypt spoke to the Khadive about his pro-German ministers he didn't get much done,. so he came back , this time bringing with him British tanks and armoured cars and the Khadive was much more receptive and fired his pro-German ministers. Regime change was necessary in Iraq and Iran for the same reasons in 1941. The Americans could use their considerable economic power to get things done in South America without needing to use troops. Surely Paraguayan president was right to see past the Axis early victories and assess that the combined powers of USA, UK and USSR would ultimately prevail..

there were a lot of countries that were sympathetic or allied with the Axis powers. Agree that the President of Paraguay made a pragmatic and forward thinking decision to get closer to the USA, but I suspect this was a realpolitik/pragmatic decision rather than ideological.
