@@HistoryHustle There was also a Belgian soldier who served with the Grand Armee in Russia named Joseph Abbeel. As far as I know his and Walter's diaries are the only ones ever kept by common soldiers serving under Napoleon. I suppose he literacy rate in WWII was a lot higher and a lot more soldiers from every army kept diaries.

Perhaps you will agree with me that much about Eastern Europe and the second World War is like a crumpled news paper. That is many persons knew of it. It was public and published, but estranged to us by the Cold War and Iron Curtain. I am grateful to find evan a wispy trail here.

Thank you for all of your hard work. It's great to see a teacher who presents a lecture and immerses himself in the topic and acts as though he was an eyewitness. Reading history is demanding, it gives. And it takes. "Bloodlands" is one example of a rough read. I taught history for 30 years, here in the United States, from an American perspective, and have gained a great deal from your well researched videos. If an American really wants to know why Russians see the world the way that they do they might want to skim the surface with this video.

Doesn't surprise me. During WW1 Germany took notes from Napoleons invasion of Russia, and during WW2 the Germans took notes from their invasion of Russia in WW1. If you want to defeat an enemy you have to gaver as much military information about the enemy country as possibly, same with the Vietnam War regarding the Indochina war of the 2001 invasion of Afghanistan regarding the Soviet Afghan war.

I heard that for every 1 soldier fighting in Russia there were 8 that were used in support. Also German units would straight up steal supplies off of German trains meant for other units, due to Hitlers order of “live off the land” Not only the war and fighting, but seeing the brutality by some or certain units. Having to fight and look constantly for supplies. I wonder how quickly the optimism went to frustration and even anger. Edit: Great video btw! diaries were usually forbidden by armies in ww2. not just for propaganda reasons, but because it might contain intel useful to the enemy .. some soldiers got around this by writing in books, like the Bible. which were less likely to be checked by officers than a notebook. its very useful reading accounts written during the war, rather than revised versions after. several German generals wrote books - ofc they blamed everything on Hitler and deflected from their own actions.

Excellent video. One thing I kind of disagree with is I think historians often oversimplify it when they say the Soviets we’re able to replace their losses so much easier than the Germans. I know the USSR had more than double the population of Germany, but they had about 6 times the losses in the first year, and they lost a ton of territory, hence population to draw from. To me the real problem for Germany was the manpower disadvantage combined with Germany just being so overextended. The distances everything had to travel were just unreal. Not to mention the fact that they also had to occupy Europe and were still at war with the western powers. I think all those things put together must have made it seem like the Soviets had unlimited resources. Like the Germans would have new divisions and replacements show up in driblets, meanwhile the Soviets have entire new armies showing up every month
@johnfoster8643
@johnfoster8643 2 жыл бұрын
@@BLRSharpLight Yes I completely agree. The Soviets had the combination of shorter supply lines, being willing to do literally whatever they had to do, and a bigger population to draw from. So it’s no wonder it must have seemed like the Soviets were able to raise armies overnight. A lot of people forget that as evil as Nazi Germany was, they were still a western country with a western standard of living. So Hitler knew there were limits to the sacrifices he could make his people do, especially since he started the war.

@John Henni Likewise. It took two viewings separated by 6years. For years I thought it was over the top graphic hyperbole. It wasnt until my mind could digest it that I realised that it lined up exactly with all the cold brutal statistics of civilian deaths and the documented programs of annihilation.

Man… you are making amazing videos… just keep going, as it's an imperative to present as much as possible these parts of WW2 from the German points of view. It's well known fact how authentic is history from the victorious side… particularly now in the era of "progressive" dogmas accompanied by other social "inventions"… where Cultural-Marxism serves as ideological platform

Glad you liked the video. History is not written by the victors I think, but written by those with the most consistent and compelling arguments based on the evidence, backed by a healthy dose of rational logic and passion for debate. The key is not to apologize for any side but to take a firm stand for what's right and what's wrong.

Dude Bruno you might wanna workshop your nazi apologetics and make them a bit more subtle history is written in the blood of the innocent and facts do not care about your feelings it's important to understand precisely to grasp how men who didn't start out all of them with evil in their hearts could alllow themselves to become monsters in the name of their fuhrer and loyalty to their so called 'race'

What I learned from this video is that the violence, torture and killings just escalated every day for the worse from both sides. That war was hell. It's sad to think about how many people suffered because of this. I think this video was excellent. I have not seen somebody talk about the German perspective without being too emotional about it. Most Germans were not evil people at least before the war.. The war made them probably so numb to the killings and such because it happened everyday almost. I want people the imagine them in the Wehrmacht soldiers position. You have marched hundreds of kilometers and finally there is some house and some food inside. You are starving. You are dying. Would you steal the food? Most people would. I'm not saying that it was ok at all I'm just trying to get in to the mindset of the ordinary soldier and people should try too. It opens WW2 to a whole new level.

Excellent again 👍 I can tell you from SPANISH perspective. “Rusia es culpable” was the official propaganda at that time. About 50.000 Spanish soldiers (most of them volunteers, not all) and officers went to Russia to make Communists pay hard their intervention in Spanish Civil War. They were destined to the cold northern front, they did not mind it. Russian civilians were well treated by Spanish troops, which caused some fights with brutal racists German troops.

One element which first shook the Germans' belief that the enemy was inferior to them was encountering the T-34 in combat for the first time, in the early days of the invasion. The T-34 was superior to German armor by such a large margin than when the Germans got a committee together to decide what to do, Heinz Guderian suggested that they should simply copy it.

Great video, super interesting. I am always interested in hearing how history was percieved those who were there, especially when their point of view might differ significantly from what is considered the Western "Norm" of today. I think considering differing perspectives is essential to understand history, and to avoid repeating its mistakes. This is a really great niche of historical content you have found, and I love it. I think that above any other war the Second World War needs to be revisited. With the passage of time we can reanalyze German motivation and attitudes to bring more nuance and sophistication into our understanding. I was raised on the "evil German" narrative, if you like, where Germans were portrayed as immoral Nazi fanatics out to commit whatever cruelty was required of them by their insane leader but nobody should accept this account any more. This is not, of course, to be an apologist for the Nazis, not at all, but the events leading up to the Second World War, the actions of Roosevelt and, to a lesser degree Churchill, need to be given a higher profile. Thank you for giving the average Germans perspective. I've done some research on the attitudes of Germans prior to the war and Hitler never seemed to be overly popular. As I claim, the traditional Christian center of Germany, against the extremes of communism and Nazism, actually held and it was only a minority who were enthusiastic supporters of Hitler. This shows how Germans felt and thought about their actions and explains why so many did what they did. Germany suffered terribly during and after the war, it is time they also had a voice.

@@HistoryHustleYou need to familiarize yourself with Alexander Lvovich Parvus. He was a Marxist scholar who is forgotten today but was extremely influential on Trotsky amongst others. It was Parvus, early in the 20th century, who proposed the theory that wars were necessary for achieving revolutionary outcomes. The tension between Trotsky and Stalin was that Trotsky thought there should be war should be fabricated in Europe and then revolutionary cells within those countries should try to take power, as happened in the Soviet Union, while Stalin believed that a European war should be fabricated and then a massive Soviet army should invade Europe and be greeted as liberators. As history shows, Stalin's ideas won the day. They fabricated a war and then invaded half of Europe. If not for Roosevelt's death, the Soviet's would have gotten even more. I know it is awful to think the entire Second World War was fabricated for strategic purposes by leftists in the United States and Russia but it's simply true. When properly understood, there is WAY too much evidence.

Yeah, commies starved, executed & worked to death more innocents than nazi's did. Hate tyranny equally. Fascism, Socialism & Communism all suck. Stalin starved to death 6-8 million Ukrainians in the 30's during farm collectivazation just to show them who was boss. Blocking units, no retreat orders, not valuing the Russian people as people & purging competent military leaders prior to war lead to needless destruction of human life seen as expendable.
