Sodor Is NOT a Heritage Railway but a normal Railway. A Heritage Railway usually only has passenger trains, but on Sodor there are all types of jobs.

I have a theory as to why Diesel kept returning, British Rail tried to modernise the North Western Railway. And Diesel 10 kinda gives me SCP vibes. I’m sure there’s probably another person in the cab besides the driver controlling his claw too.

D10 strikes me as a discarded prototype - a shortened down diesel hydraulic, with the claw attachment just being something he's stuck with, but was actually just the version of a modular crane arm addition he's stuck with. Maybe it was an attempt at combining the hydraulic transmission with hydraulic construction equipment. The 10 in his name just refers to him being the tenth of such prototypes, and maybe the claw was to controlled remotely - drive the engine on location, and then let the driver/operator do the work once stepping outside. It would make sense of why the claw is on him where it is and why they went with this particular class. The driver not having a clear sight on his claw from the cab wouldn't be an issue, if he was meant to be operated remotely. His animosity towards steam engines probably comes from being discarded, and watching other diesel-hydraulics and "non-standard" designs being withdrawn and scrapped, while the preservation and steam heritage movement was kicking off.

The theory is, (And it's TATMR related, sorry not sorry) Is that Peter Theodore Boomer (P.T.Boomer) Gave Tennant (A fan name I've taken a liking to) Pinchy, AKA, Project D-10. Boomer did this with the thought that he'd be able to use Tennant to not only scarp Lady, but kill Burnett Stone in the process. But, the Claw had some side effects as you mentioned, making Tennant a little, off the rails, if ye will?

His name was diesel. The CGI series nicknamed him Devious. Arry and Bert tried to scrap stepney but he escaped from the scrapyard so Arry and Bert tried to give it another try but got caught, why didn't the fat hatt not punish them? It doesn't make sense.

I think the implication in the beginning of the show/ books was that he didn't have a name. He wasn't known as Diesel because that was his name, but rather because he never got one. That's why BoCo, Derek, D261, D199, D7101, D10, Old Stuck Up, and the Works Diesel were all known as "(The) Diesel" at one point (the former being called a "Diseasel" by Bill and Ben until they learned his name, a clear malapropism of the word "Diesel"). As far as "Devious Diesel" is concerned, I kinda view it in the same light as Ben 10. Ben Tennyson was never called "Ben 10" in the classic iteration of the show. Only his toys (and the show's title sequence) called him that for marketability. Similarly, Diesel was never called "Devious Diesel" in the show, instead only in the toyline (as a homage to the US title of his main episode, "Diesel's Devious Deed"), at least up until the HiT Era.

I think for Arry and Bert it is because they are not his engines. Though now that I think about it he could have told the Iron Works manager that if he doesn’t get his engines under control he will have the line up to the Iron Works property ripped up and not do any business. Plus if the fat controller did punish them the all he would have to do would be have British Railways send a train of 08 class diesels to the scrap yard.

Fun Fact: Duck and Devious are kinda in the same boat. Both are mass produced worck horses. They also both are kinda arrogant, with Duck never shutting up about the Great Western Railway. The may diffrence being that Duck, despite all his flaws, hes a good engine and a loyal friend. Diesel on the other hand.......you cant even say hes yousfull cause honestly he fucks up quite a lot of jobs in the show. Then again Sir Topm is wary against scrapping his engines fore any reasons, instead giving them crap dutys as punishmenst wich so far has proven more effectife

Diesel 10's claw was given so he could move trees and scrap of the lines or near the railway lines. But he has been bought by some scrapyard and Kills any and every train he is given. Arry' & Bert don't kill trains, they just shunt them to their final resting place. Which could be the murderess claw of D10. Some people say that Pinchy has a mind of it's own.

OK, so why isn't Henry on this list? He was built using "stolen" plans, but the plans had a flaw in the design, which wasn't discovered until to late into the construction process. as such, Henry was a bad steamer, and would often struggle with his work loads. The Fat Controller issued him "Special Coal" to make Henry feel better, but it didn't solve the problem at all. Only after having a horrific crash while taking the flying kipper, did the Fat Controller, finally decide to have Henry overhauled in Crewe, and to have all of his problems and issued sorted out, and wouldn't need special coal any more!

Canonically the Sodor railways were nationalised along with the rest of British Railways in 1948, at which point the Fat Director became the Fat Controller.
