In this video I interview Marietta historian Harley Noland who probably knows more about the city than anyone else alive. I spent two days with Harley as he gave me a private tour of the beautiful historic river town following up with this video interview on top of an ancient Indian burial mound where we talk about why Marietta is the most historic city in the state of Ohio.

My family and I lived in Marietta for five years. A wonderful town to raise a family, or even to visit on a weekend when they host one of their many festivals. The downtown has many excellent dining and entertainment options as well.

We visit Marietta often because there are so many things to see and do. We bike around on the river trail, eat at local restaurants, walking is shopping is nice, and educational things for the grandchildren. Lovely city that holds onto their history due to the good work of this man. The Trolley ride is great.

We moved to Marietta in 1963, 31:46 when I was 10, and I thought I'd gone to Heaven! It was a great place to be a kid back then. It was good to see Harley; he was a year ahead of me in highschool, as was Mayor Shlicher's mother. Excellent presentation!

You left out the fact that Marietta College is heavily funded by the Ministry of State Security (the principal civilian intelligence, security and secret police agency of the People's Republic of China, responsible for foreign intelligence, counterintelligence, and political security.) It's certainly worth mentioning.

Where was the long boat built for the original settlers of Marietta ...to float down the Ohio to the confluence of the Muskingum and Ohio rivers...??.. 170 miles is 20 to 30 miles past Pittsburgh... and did the settlers take the land route across the mountains ...or the water route across the great lakes...to get to the Ohio River..??.. I am a cousin of both General Rufus Putnam ....and Nathaniel Clark, the Marietta and Parkersburg potter...and several others that settled Marietta and Belpre...

Historically speaking, skinny roads could easily be blocked by insurrection's by a single horse drawn cart. That is why wide roads were built. This goes back several centuries in Europe. At least that is what was taught in Architectual History classes back in the 1970's.
