On the first day of the Battle of the Somme, Britain lost 20K soldiers killed. Machine guns, poison gas, flamethrowers, planes and massive artillery. This battle, 500 years prior, lost 28K killed. With just bows, spears and swords. A bloody massacre, that has still never been topped as our bloodiest day.

During ww2, In the battle of Rhezev , soviets lost 600,000 men and women in the first four and an half days. Soviets consider it a great success since it was able to divert nazi reinforcements heading towards Stalingrad , ultimately resulting the victory of the soviets 5 months later.

Excellent as always. Bloody Meadow was at the end of the battle rather than the main plain it was fought on but you're right that Towton is famous for it, as is Tewkesbury. You might want to edit the graphics a little - you have Towton as Townton and half of Norfolk has disappeared into The Wash when Edward is marching north. But that aside, superbly put together once again.
@markstott6689
@markstott6689 20 күн бұрын
That's because prior to the 17th century drainage schemes there was a lot more land under water. The sea came a lot further inland. There was salt Marsh, freshwater Marsh and Islands in-between. The map used represents this very well. It thus shows the terrain that armies had to deal with at the time. If, for example, you used a modern map and then showed Norfolk's Company marching to say Bury St Edmunds before turning northward, you would wonder why they hadn't just gone via Boston, a much shorter route.

I did not expect that, the story telling was exceptional good in this video, similar to the ones about Rome! The difference between Edward IV, his generals and his enemies is really interesting. The fact that he risk is life even if it looked like he would lose, and that his generals never backstabbed him is also what makes a good army.

Years ago I had the honour of attending a private reception at the Royal Armouries museum in Leeds. The curators brought up the beautiful gold and jewel encrusted ceremonial mace of Edward IV. Then I had the honour of actually handling the plain iron battle mace reputedly swung by the King at Towton. The weapon was perfectly balanced and sat easily in my hand. You could do serious damage with it with minimal effort. I’ll never forget that.

@@jasondonaldson7412 I find it funny that our country hasn't really changed in 500 years. I was following the march of Norfolk's men in this video with a real (present day) map on google of the same, it has all the same names, same roads even in the exact same places. Not sure if the artist whom does the maps is doing it from historic maps or not. But if so, that is incredible (to me) anyways, we haven't really changed.
