I learned about this historic battle when I got curious about how and why Portugal was absorbed by Spain at one point and proceeded to do some research. It led me all the way to this battle, which decisively weakened the royal family and the country of Portugal, triggering succession crisis and civil wars, and ultimately allowing Spain the golden opportunity to exploit the situation and take over Portugal. On the other hand the battle strengthened the Moroccan Saadi regime which then began its, albeit brief, ascent to regional power status. Thanks a lot for bringing this pivotal battle to attention. This battle deserves to be much better known.
@LauftFafa8 ай бұрын
morocco will stay a regional power till the 1700s , the strongest moroccan monarch was moulay ismail ( also have Guinness world record for most kids) in his Era morocco's army was around 300k strong 150k of them were regulars following the janissary model and in that period morocco would fight spain and the ottomans successfully . that sultan even did parade once over 40.000 european war captives many of them later joined his christian guard . in his reign morocco became an attraction point to the european Renegades who didnt want to serve the ottomans but still wanted to serve a strong monarch . i believe the city of el sawira in his time period had over 10.000 danish renegades or maybe it was a different coastal city. so yeah the golden age technically should last until the 1720s then they will get a 3rd one around 1770s to 1800 (reason morocco was confident enough to be first to recognize the Usa and be also first to technically declare war on usa before the barbary wars and impose a protection tax on their ships that the americans accepted to pay after losing some 2 or 3 ships . a deal that will stay in vigor ) during the napoleonic era morocco will feel intimidated by the strength of france and this will force the country to become isolated and protective instead of seeking allies and keeping technological improvements and try to be up to date like the ottomans did . in general its a respectable history probably the longest and most glorious of all existing arab countries today.

this battle basically put an end to the powerful House of Avis monarchy of Portugal , essentially starting the gradual decline of their global maritime empire. but this was inevitable, as the Portuguese monarchs at that time were obsessed with crusading against Islam. successfully managing and defending a global maritime empire while simultaneously committing to a 350 year protracted holy war in North Africa eventually put too much of strain on their small population. but you gotta tip your hat to them. what they accomplished in 2 centuries forever changed the course of human history, as they pioneered the age of discovery and modern day globalization. being the first Westerners many different cultures across the globe had ever encountered, spreading their language, DNA, culture and legacy across all of planet earth. for a nation of only 1 million souls at that time, it's nothing short of extraordinary.

At the end the kings of Spain and Portugal wants to join the two countries.. in deep the infant of Portugal Miguel was the one to take the 4 crowns of the Spanish kingdoms (Portugal, Castilla, Aragon and Navarra). Sebastian was too young and didn't have a father neither a grandpa for most of his life. As such, he didn't get the knowledge passed by more experienced people that ruled Portugal. Sebastian didn't listen to his advisors and took this harsh decision. He didn't even consider how valuable his own life was to Portugal since he was too young, he had no sons and there wasn't close lineages that could hold the kingdom for long. As such the kingdom ended up falling into the hands of Felipe who was the closest related to Sebastião. This was really an unfortunate event. I would even say this incident marked the downfall of the kingdom of Portugal, all because Sebastião didn't know much.

Morocco is an ancient country and has a style of religiosity that makes it unified and does not disintegrate. Some of the people’s faults are that they are weak in development, but when there is a rational leadership, it witnesses miracles, and for this reason Europe is afraid of the Moroccan renaissance. In the map, in 1578, there was no entity by the name of Algeria but the Ottoman Empire. The name of Algeria will appear for the first time in 1839, because the French needed a name for the newly possessed overseas territory. When dealing with historic events, the used maps in that regard should reflect the adequate political borders as they were back then.
@Miguel09MCКүн бұрын
it was still called algeria under the ottoman empire because the capital of that province was the city of algiers
@abdallahzerouale2548Күн бұрын
@Miguel09MC Not correct..before 1830 (under the rule of the Ottomans) that North African country used to be called the Regency of Algiers (derived from the Arabic word al-Jazayer: 3 islands on the coast). After the French made the Regency of Algiers part of France, they needed a name for the new department, so in 1839 General Schneider named it Algeria, and from there they expanded it from a coastal city to a huge department, at first of over 300.00 km2, then later from 1845 till 1952 with over 2.381.000 km2. This bizarre enlargement of the newly created entity was of course at the expense of neighbouring countries, namely the Cherifian Empire (Morocco), who lost over 1 m km2 of its eastern territory (Oriental Sahara). After the independence of the region, neither France nor Algeria gave back the stolen territories to their original owners: Morocco, Tunisia, and Libya.
