TOLEDO, OHIO (Nov. 10, 2023) - 49 years ago today -- Nov. 10, 1975 -- the 729-ft. Great Lakes ore carrier Edmund Fitzgerald sank in heavy seas in lower Lake Superior. All 29 hands on board were lost...their bodies presumed to be still aboard the ship, which lies broken in two in 530 feet of icy cold water. To this day, opinions still differ as to why the "Mighty Fitz" went down. I was born and raised in Toledo, Ohio and served as a Great Lakes Tug Captain in my younger years...and of course, the Fitzgerald utilized Toledo as its home port. Plus, several of the Fitz's crew members lived in and around Toledo, including Capt. McSorley who lived near the University of Toledo with his wife. That said, the story of the Fitzgerald is quite personal to me. Join me, the History Mystery Man, for Part 3 of Season 3 with Captain Darrell Walton -- his uncle Ralph Grant Walton went down with the ship -- as we sift through some of the factors that brought the powerful ship to the bottom of Superior. Capt. Darrell also discusses the dive in which retired police officer Fred Shannon took part and what it means all these years later. We'll also reintroduce the Wilfred Sykes and the Arthur M. Anderson to the story and bring in the Fitz's sister ship Arthur B. Homer...all that and much more. Thanks for your support...please enjoy Part 3 of Season 3 with Capt. Darrell Walton. #EdmundFitzgerald #LakeSuperior #GreatLakes #GreatLakesShipping #GordonLightfoot

Enjoy watching these videos and hearing Capt Darrell’s commentary. I have spent many hours researching the Fitz and am captivated by the various theories surrounding the sinking and stories of the crewmen and families touched by this tragedy. I was not personally touched by the loss of the Fitz, but I grew up along the south shore of Lake Erie and seeing freighters was a common occurrence. Happy belated birthday to Capt Darrell, too! RIP Edmund Fitzgerald, her crew and all sailors who have lost their lives plying our beautiful Great Lakes. Fair winds and following seas to those who continue to sail. 🙏🏻⚓️

Thank you, and Capt Darrell. People come together once a year for the Fitzgerald, but rarely a day goes by I don't think. Seeing ships come in to Manistee, I always think about that night. The things said here, like how she was still taking "summer loads", the charts being wrong at 6 fathom shoal, ect... they knew. Still, they pushed McSorely, the crew, and the ship beyond what they knew was going to result in this tragedy. Since a very young age, my love and obsession of the Fitz has never faded... R.I.P to those lost, and those who coped....

When I was a youngster I remember hearing the song Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. I asked my father what the song was about, and he explained to me about what had happened to the ship and crew. It still fascinates me to this day hearing information and stories about this great ship and crew as well as other ships lost on the Great Lakes. I thoroughly enjoy watching your videos with Capt. Darrell and the information that is uncovered. I grew up and live next to Lake Erie in the suburbs of Buffalo NY. and I’m very familiar with the power and majesty of these inland seas and the history of them. Hello HMM and Capt Darrell! Thank you for sharing this it is a sad time in history and one that was learned from. Capt Darrell speaking of riveted ships and welded ships- The Homer was seen to have had faults- welded- some that served on the Fitz said She creaked and groaned- welded- not to take away from the ppl who welded on Her- As a pressure vessels welder, If not properly prepped as in pre heating, post heating in both using a heat source such as a propane tiger torch to expel moisture from the steel, heat to desired temp , weld, and then using a tiger torch to gradually reduce heat to marry the atoms in a way that allows proper arrangement and no weak points once completed.Capt Darrell agreed, Hitting Caribou Shoal was part of Her demise. To find the Homer had stress cracks (all welded) and decommissioned because of. That does not speak against the welders who welded on the Fitz. It speaks about the 3 cargo holds in each the Fitz and Homer. Did both Sykes and Anderson < believe She has has 5? All welded vs Riveted? Each of those processes can be seen as sign of the times. Its always harder longer faster in the world of progress.Unfortunately safety standards were not a stringent as they are now maybe why no ship has been lost on the great lakes since the Fitz . God Bless all 29 souls on the mighty Fitz and their families. Thanks Again HMM, It is a real treat having Capt Darrell aboard.

Don and Darrell, thank you for this series and your insight on this tragedy. Darrell I am very sorry for the loss you and your family have endured with your Father and your uncle. You mentioned Richard Orgel who served on the Fitzgerald as a 2nd Mate. Sadly, Mr. Orgel passed away in 2021. As you addressed in this episode, it is a matter of the clock ticking with contacting people who may have personal information or experience with working on the Anderson or the Fitzgerald. Thank you for your service and sharing your experiences. RIP to the crew of the Fitz on this 48th anniversary.

It was great to see Capt. Darrell again. I've actually been thinking about exactly what happened, and I remember what Capt. Bernie Cooper said. He said McSorley sounded tired, but he was also calm. My theory is that if they didn't hit those shoals, that those welds they did on her keels simply broke apart. And I think we all know it's wasn't the hatch covers. People don't realize exactly how strong Lake Superior is. I think it twisted and turn and the metal they used for the keel gave out, which lead to flooding, and because it was overloaded, her own cargo turned against her, and when those waves hit the Fitzgerald, the waves pushed her down, and it caused her to hit the floor of Lake Superior, and it have an accordion effect, which lead to the stern to capsize, and what is left is The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald. May the 29 men who were lost that fateful evening rest peacefully. And may Capt. Darrell's Dad rest peacefully as well. And may the memory of the Edmund Fitzgerald live on forever

You're welcome @HistoryMysteryMan . To be honest, I think we will find out what happened. All we have to do is look at the evidence from a different perspective. From the Expedition '94 documentary, to the Deep Sea Detectives documentary, and all the other stories we have heard. There's always a time and a place when we will find out. With that being said, thank you for everything you have done for the history of the Edmund Fitzgerald. It's up to all of us to keep the memories alive

I can’t describe the anticipation that overcomes me every November when I know History Mystery Man and Captain Darrell will be reminiscing about the Mighty Fitz!! A very grateful thank you to Captain Darrell for his service to our great country. I am so thankful to hear his take on the situation we find ourselves in politically. He’s absolutely correct, and if those of us who are like minded don’t start echoing his sentiments loudly we will soon find ourselves looking back and wondering what the hell happened and why did we allow it!?!
