The most oppressive Tyrant has left the country. She money laundered our taxes increasing inflation. According to a report by Bonik Barta, over the last 15 years of her rule, nearly $150 billion, equivalent to around Tk 17.6 lakh crore, was syphoned out of the country. Sajeeb Wazed Joy, Hasina's son, received a total of TK 1 crore and 60 lakh monthly for his job as the ICT advisor of PM. Pure nepotism as no advice is that overpriced. Yet, the rest of us plebian can barely get a job. Most significantly, our country faces high levels of youth unemployment with 18 million people - almost a fifth of those aged between 18-24 in a population of 170 million people - not working or in education. Islami Bank Bangladesh PLC was the best performing bank in the country even just a decade ago. The bank surpassed all other banks in the country in various indices including abiding by the laws, serving the customers and other financial indicators. The bank was way ahead in collecting local deposits or foreign currencies due to the people’s reliability on it. But the situation started to change from 2017. Because of the government’s political decision that year, S Alam Group, close to the immediate past Awami League government, took control of the bank. Since then this business conglomerate and Nabil Group from Rajshahi have taken out Tk 500 billion through known and anonymous persons and entities in seven and a half years. The amount is one-third of the bank’s total loans. No rules were followed to withdraw this money. The process of how the money was withdrawn from the Islami Bank is akin to how controversial Prashanta Kumar (PK) Halder withdrew money from four financial institutions. Those financial organisations are now on the brink of collapse with the depositors not getting their money back. The four financial institutions under Halder’s control were Peoples Leasing and Financial Services, International Leasing and Financial Services, Finance and Investment Limited, and Bangladesh Industrial Finance Company. PK Halder was managing director of Aviva Finance and Global Islami Bank, owned by S Alam group. Salman F Rahman, one of Sheikh Hasina's trusted advisers with a ministerial rank, thrived on financial transgression by using murky politics to drive his business empire. His proximity to Hasina and her political circle helped him bend the rules at ease in the corporate world. Many familiar with Salman's wrongdoing described him as "the father of default culture" in Bangladesh. Salman's Beximco Group borrowed a colossal amount, nine times higher than Janata Bank's paid-up capital, bringing significant risks to the 2nd largest State Owned Commercial Bank (SCB) in Bangladesh. That's just one example. Beximco got its defaulted loans rescheduled on many occasions by compelling the regulators to make or amend rules. It also shielded itself from legal peril by securing court orders in its favour. "Salman F Rahman has become synonymous with a loan defaulter despite his contribution to the industrial sector," said Faruq Mainuddin, a banking sector analyst. Salman is still accused of ruining the debentures market in Bangladesh as he delayed the repayment of around Tk 100 crore in funds that he raised in the 1990s. Beximco was the first company in Bangladesh to issue debentures in the late 1990s, but it has remained a defaulter for the past 20 years. This is the main reason why the bond market in Bangladesh has not developed as the investors' first experience with bond investment was negative, which created a lasting bad impression. As Beximco was preparing to issue the country's largest sukuk to raise Tk 3,000 crore in 2021, the company's debenture default issue came to a head as a company that has already defaulted on payments cannot be allowed to issue bonds again. Public criticism by investors prompted the SEC to order the company to repay the dues. Beximco repaid the funds 15 years after the cut-off time. Salman pressurised institutional investors to park money in his company's sukuk, with some banks hesitatingly investing a low amount. So, the SEC had to extend the subscription time at least twice. Salman went as far as to "force" the central bank of Bangladesh also known as Bangladesh Bank to change rules so that banks can invest in sukuk by borrowing funds from a scheme designed only for the stock market, not for shariah-compliant bonds. Of the total Sukuk amount, 70% of the subscriptions have come from the banking industry - both private and public - followed by the corporate investor and the mutual fund, respectively. BRAC Bank Managing Director Selim RF Hussain said the entire amount raised through Sukuk is a liability of the Beximco Group, which lacks the capacity to repay. According to newspaper reports, the former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed built Savanna Eco-Resort and five other companies in Bairagitol village of Gopalganj with an investment of over Tk500 crore. This huge property seems irrational in proportion to his official earnings of Tk1.85 crore during the service spanning 34 years and seven months before retiring as the 30th IGP. Yet this man was awarded the National Integrity Award 2020-21 by Hasina's government. Why? Well prior to his appointment as IGP, he served as the Director General of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) from January 2015 to April 2020. The Guardian has said the battalion has been accused by human rights activists of being a "death squad" responsible for more than 1,000 extra-judicial killings since it was established in 2004. He is currently on a US sanctions list due to RAB's alleged role in forcibly disappearing citizens since December 2021. Bangladesh’s former chief of staff, retired General Aziz Ahmed was the subject of the 2021 Al Jazeera investigation All the Prime Minister’s Men, which focused on the how a criminal gang led by the general’s brother, Haris Ahmed, used police and paramilitary units to abduct rivals and earn millions in bribes. Bangladesh had termed the Al Jazeera investigative report "All the Prime Minister's Men" as "false, defamatory and a politically motivated smear campaign". Yet when he was blacklisted in May 2024, as US imposed sanctions on Ahmed and his immediate family members on allegation of his involvement in corruption. This man claimed that 2018 general elections was the calmest and most peaceful election atmosphere he has witnessed in 47 years. We are drowning in debt.

Bangladeshi here. Everything didn't stem from the recent quota movement, but from the BDR mutiny a few years ago, and the conspiracy behind it. Did WW2 just start because Germany invaded Poland? Or was the invasion itself incited by the political movements in Germany back then, stemming from reasons including the treaty of Versailles? Little it is that we ponder, and little do we remember.

You hit an important point that i realized long ago at 27 minutes in. A lot of parties have student wings. Young people are easy to manipulate, a feeling of invincibility, and a desire for change. But no movement is truly started by them. Somebody is always pulling the strings. They go to school and who is teaching them what? The gov itself was clearly bad. But the students were also being manipulated by a bad force. I dont expect much from this unless elders get involved. Time will tell. But it wont be ignorant students that create stability.

Our country was also run like a police state with brutality unmatched in the region. The only reason this revolution succeeded was because of our students indomitable will . The problem with the US is that it's students have been conditioned so perfectly that they get cognitive dissonance even thinking about revolution. Every single state apparatus works to make sure students never have enough energy to even think about revolution . Student debt , Destroying Unity , Misrepresentation by media everything works together to quell the sparks of revolution.

I am from Bangladesh and what many people don't know is that Sheikh mujib (the founding father of Bangladesh) was a dictator too who banned voting, media, private property and caused 1974 famine in which 2 million people died. We call that bakshali era. That's why in 1975 he was coup'd by army who cane to power and were rewarded by succesive governments. Most of our elders know mujib's real story but today's generation don't even know Those who killed mujib and distributed sweets were all freedom fighters as well but this awamileague party makes it look like awamileague is the only freedom party which is ironic. Also this awamileague party was backed by India so that India can control Bangladesh from within.
@cck48633 ай бұрын
Friendly , maybe, Control by India? Certainly NOT. Awamileague is pro China, they are part of the belt and road, tens of billions deep in B & R. You can't be control by India and still went so deep in Belt and Road.

6:40 fun fact, if you watch the video where they said this statement (it was televised) you would see MANY wrong things. Firstly, Nahid Islam had a newspaper on his lap, trying to hide the fact that he was wearing a lungi (its basically a skirt, no its not gey its like how scottish people wear the kilt) he was wearing lungi because the injuries on his legs that he got via torture from the detective branch was so bad that he couldnt wear pants. Secondly, one of the other coordinators was tapping his foot oddly during the statement, turns out he was using morse code to spell out "HTS", or "Help The Students" Thirdly (idk if this is true or not) apparently people could see the police pointing guns at the coordinators from a TV screen behind them.

Russians are not politically active. As long as they do their bit and keep their heads down, they get some level of prosperity. They have "outsourced" the job of politics to Putin and his ilk. Most people don't expect any major advancement in their lives, they don't expect to become very wealthy, they just won't see the horrors of the 90s again. In all, they just know to sing when asked to sing, and do the bare minimum to not stand out anywhere, and most importantly - shut up. Bangladesh on the other hand was politically active, and they have demography on their side. Bangladesh has more people than Russia. (That itself shocks me) Bangladesh also has a lot of young people. Russia's young people were dwindling, and then too so many were sacrificed in Ukraine for nothing. Its not going to happen anytime soon.
