UPDATE: 2 days after I made this things started to heat up again, and 2 days after I posted this protestors stormed the government and Hasina has resigned. Bangladesh is in chaos and an update video will follow. My friends, thank you for watching and thank you for calling out the edit error. My editor used the wrong photo at 7:36 when you can hear me say the correct name. The name on screen is not correct as that is a different person entirely. Thank you for the accountability call out and I’ll keep it in here so people are aware. If anything else in here is a wrong picture, let me know so we can time stamp it.

@@benjaminfjellander3242 Al Jazeera and DW has been covering it well on recent protests. If you want to know about the Sheikh Hasina Dictatorship and the elements that allow it then I will suggest watching “Prime Ministers Men” investigative documentary by Al Jazeera. If you want to learn about Human rights abuse by the paramilitary “RAB” and how they get promoted to go to UN mission then DW has a documentary on it as well but I don’t remember the name at the moment. Edit: I would refrain from listening to any English speaking Bengali news source as freedom of press in Bangladesh is little to none and therefore majority journalists just repeat government talking points. I would also avoid any other Indian or Pakistani news source as they have vested interests in Bangladesh.

(oh and of course, the ministry appointed a loyalist and from the same party to..totally unbiased...investigate... and the responsible equivalent to an attorney.. did quit, saying she got nowhere and "decided to pursue other opportunities" (with higher pay..and friendly wishes from the loyalists)

Commenting from Bangladesh here. You have captured the timeline of events very accurately. Haven't seen this level of detail and accuracy from international news organizations. However there are some inaccuracies, the attacks on TV stations, metro stations and other govt buildings were not done by students. These were targeted by outsiders. Around 200+ deaths were confirmed but it is suspected that the real death toll is 1000+. Even after all of these deaths and violence the government continued to lie and use police, paramilitary and Chatra League as instruments of violence and death. The organizers were picked up from their homes and hospitals and tortured in the custody of police. They were freed just yesterday. As of now protests are now continuing demanding the resignation of the government. We have had enough of the autocrats, the lies, the looting of our country. What started out as a movement against quotas is now fully an anti authoritarian movement supported by the general population.

Any student of what happened in Egypt with the Arab Spring should understand that making a peace deal with a government which remains in power like this is a huge mistake. Of course the Bangladeshi government was going to use the lull to isolate and arrest protest leaders. It's a standard practice among totalitarian governments nowadays. If these students want to win- or even to survive for that matter- they have to accept that at this point it really is them or the government.

@@thecursed01 In Bangladesh, women protested against the women's quota themselves and lost their lives in the protest. Yes, our mothers and aunts needed it once but the situation has changed. The population of women is actually higher and our condition has improved. To encourage female education we should introduce stipends for female students(which we already have in many regions). Not reserved posts in jobs because it's unfair. And thankfully it's gone now. Now we want our dictator PM to step down and bring justice to the lives that were lost during the protest.

@@Yadid1 No, he's got a point. The majority of US media has been caught up trying to paint the Vice President, who just took over for Joe Biden since he dropped out of the race, as 'the new greatness' and sweeping everything she did poorly (pretty much everything) under the proverbial rug, all while trying to bash Trump as a coward (which is hard to believe given he didn't drop out after getting shot). Between this and the tinderbox that is Britain (finally) starting to kick off over the anti-immigration issue, the fact the Bangladesh situation is getting ignored isn't unsurprising. Hopefully things have a just resolution over there, but given how, well, _everything_ seems to be going pear-shaped at the moment, I'm not exactly hopeful at this point.

I am a resident from Narsingdi, the place infamous for the prison break. We locals know for sure that the prison break wasn't by student protestors but by an organized mob that took advantage of the deteriorated law and order situation. Also things took a total 180 yesterday when the student protesters demanded a complete resignation of all the top officials of the government and called for a nation-wide non-cooperation mass movement. There are even unconfirmed reports that the Metro station was actually damaged not by the student protesters but infiltrators associated with the bus labor association pissed off by the decline of bus passengers due to metro rail.

My British history isn't reliable but I can say that the early Irish immigrants into North America went to escape the Famine, emigrate or die. Is that what your family faced ? The Irish-born and descended Americans were massively involved in the Irish struggles for independence from the 1798 rebellion and particularly the uprising on 1916, indeed, are specifically referred to in the proclamation of independence, the first Taoiseach, Eamonn De Valera, was the son of American parents. Is that what you are doing ? That's what I'm inviting you to do. Those brave and desperate European, British and Irish who emigrated to North America in the 19th Century didn't go into an established, first world, welcoming, comfortable society to improve their quality of life. So forced Quotas based on arbitrary non mertiocratic ideals are causing problems. Wow. I mean honestly Legally demanding that you hire people that arent qualified so you meet some pointless Quota to make people feel good? what country would think that was remotely a good idea. Its almost like forcing people to hire under qualified people based on who they are not what they can do is extremely toxic and will only lead to issues, Though i would guess the Irony of this will pass right through most Americans heads.

Hearing of quotas and seeing some regions of the world rush to instate similar systems over meritocracy, be it government jobs and private positions, and seeing Bangladesh trying to dismantle it and deal with the universal issue of corruption, there's some stark lessons to be learnt from that. Sincerely hope the country sees stability soon and well in to the future, the people deserve it.

Jobs going unfilled because of quotas - when I was in college, I remember my dad mentioning that there was some significant position in the prison where he worked that had been unfilled for months. Something like assistant warden I think. They kept getting temporary/interim people, and it was aggravating because every time they got a new person, they had to break them in again. I asked why it was so hard to fill. He sighed, laughed, and said, "Well, because the next assistant warden needs to be black and female." And they were simply not getting those specific applicants. That would be because this prison was in the middle of cornfields for miles and miles and miles. The county demographics were extremely white. It's small farming towns as far as the eye can see. Anyone hired would have to move there, and if you're already working for the DOC, you already have a stable job - unless you don't like where you live, you're probably not applying to a prison hours away. And so this position would basically go unfilled.

update: 500+ people are dead (officially), and 12000+ were arrested from late-night raids in houses only targeting students. With bail set at millions in taka. And today, 5 August 2024, after the mass movement "march to dhaka," the prime minister submitted her resignation at noon during a 2-hour internet blackout (again) and fled the country with dozens of ministers. The news was presented to us by the army chief of staff at 4 pm. Starting tomorrow, 6 August 2024, an interim government will be established with the promise of an election in 3 months. Nationwide celebrations were held. But the country is still in unrest; radicals took this chance of a lack of governance and police and stormed and destroyed various AL-related houses and landmarks, resulting in 100s of killings allegedly. The army is trying to deescalate the situation as of right now.
