Swedish history, a history of success in many respects, also displays the failures of narrow-minded local rivalry: Dennmark, Sweden and Norway could easily have been one country. The languages are very close to each other and so are the ways of life and the value systems. They could have been a very important European power. But they cannot agree whether taxi should be spelled with an "x" or with "ks"...
@tinachristine4573Ай бұрын
They'd end up like 'Great' Britain where only one country in the union has a say and dominance; the English treat the Scottish and the Welsh people are 'lesser' and even mock Northern accents. These kinds of 'unions' rarely work out.
@gerassimos.fourlanosАй бұрын
@@tinachristine4573 Ιt is not the same thing like in the UK, in Scandinavia the Swedes, Danish and Norwegians, could easily have integrated into one people.

@@gerassimos.fourlanos I think it's a bit disingenuous to say that that the "reasons" boil down to small, petty differences. The reality often tends to be that peaceful unification needs to happen at a point where one side lacks its own unity or the price of sacrificing ones own identity is considered essential for survival. By the time such talks came about, local unification was already mostly finished and all three regions, or countries, had their own identity and none of the countries in question had the might necessary to maintain oppressive control for long enough for the identity of the oppressed to be forgotten. It's not like unification hasn't been tried. The constant back and forth of conquered territories and the Kalmar Union all point towards centuries of attempted unification, both through soft force and direct force. We're on good terms now, but a thousand years of war have taught us that it is better to pursue a strong international relationship with our neighbors rather than trying to become politically intermingled, the Nordic Council was born to fill that space.
@gerassimos.fourlanos20 күн бұрын
@@Lewtable if what you are saying is valid, then it is even worse from the point of view of pettiness, what is often called "milimeterrättvisa," and suspiciousness. I was flabbergasted when I visited the Parliament in Oslo, and the guide referred to the period of union with - or under, if you prefer - Sweden, up to 1905, as the period of "Slavery under Sweden." If a Greek talks about the period under the Ottoman yoke, Scandinavians will lambast him for such a politically incorrect statement...

Sweden applied and joined NATO a few months ago. Breaking it's neutrality. But before that, Hungary and Türkiye declined their membership. They had some issues with Sweden that is now fixed. I love my future home country Sweden. I'm moving to Sweden from the USA to live with my boyfriend. I'm doing all I can before then. That's why I wanted to know the history of Sweden to take the citizenship test. And I need to learn Swedish.

There's a miss conception that Swedish growth after WW2 was due to everyone else being destroyed. This isn't the case at all and is a popular miss conception. Sweden would have had a booming economy regardless of the war and it would have stagnated just like any other did at the start of the 70s. It's just the return of social spendings, and you can't keep getting the same return year after year if you just pump the money back into your own economy.

Vasa changed a lot more than that when he rose to power. Choosing protestantism as the church for sweden, he practically took farm land and such from the church for himself and other nobles. Later in the 1600s land use would change when the king sold his land to nobles for the war machine and then just took it back without asking

The War of 1814 was not against Norway, it was against Denmark. Check the Treaty of Kiel. King Frederik VI of Denmark ceded Norway to Sweden in the Treaty of Kiel of 14 January 1814. The Norwegian dependencies of Iceland, the Faeroe Islands and Greenland were not covered by the treaty and remained in the possession of Denmark.

Actually the first king to rule both the Swedes and the Geats were Eric the Victorious, Olofs father. It is usually not mentioned as it is old dogma propaganda for Christianity, as Olof was the first Swedish christian king, while his father Eric was a pagan.

No.Gustav Vasa died of old age and of natural health problems (he had suffered chronic infections of a leg and in his jaw). Eric XIV, or Erik in Swedish, was Gustav Vasas´s oldest son. While Erik has been regarded as very intelligent. artistically skilled and politically ambitious, early in his reign he showed signs of mental instability, a condition that eventually led to insanity. He put his younger brother Johan (duke of Finland) in prison. And from 1563 onwards, his insanity became pronounced; his rule became even more arbitrary and marked by violence. His suspicion of the nobility in Sweden led him to suspicions of the Sture family, a noble family who ruled Sweden in succession as Riksföreståndare (imperial regent that represented a monarch when there was a vacancy in the throne) between 1470 and 1520. In 1597, he killed five members of the Sture family after hearing that his brother Johan had started a rebellion against him. The Sture family members was already under arrest in a castle and Erik himself stabbed one of them with his dagger and then ordered the guards to kill everyone except for "Herr Sten." (the guards executed the order, but spared two men who both had Sten as first name, as they did not know which Sten the King had just referred to). Outside the castle, Erik's old tutor, who did not belong to this group, found the king in a state of madness and tried to calm him down when he rushed out into the countryside and the old tutor was also stabbed to death by the guards after Erik's order. After the Sture homicides, His brother Johan was imprisoned again and later Erik seemed to recover his reason, and attempted to reconcile with Johan on the condition that the latter recognized Eric's marriage with his mistress Karin. She was not from a noble family, her father was just a simple soldier and her mother's family just peasants, which at that time was considered completely unthinkable as wife for a king and that they already had an infant son before the marriage was a big scandal. His brother Johan and the nobles rebelled and Erik was captured by his brother in in 1568 and formally deposed 26 January 1569 and Johan became the new king (Johan III). Erik was imprisoned for the rest of his life and died in 1977. A document signed by his brother gave Erik's guards in his last prison authorization to poison him if anyone tried to release him. And an examination of Erik's remains in 1958 by modern forensic analysis revealed evidence of lethal arsenic poisoning. But that Erik's last meal would have been pea soup is just a legend and nothing documented.
