Phew. 3 and a half hours long. 3 years in the making. 30 locations visited. 100 sources used. 15 hours upload time. Delighted to finally have this out there. I’ll sort out a detailed bibliography and list of sources I used once I have recovered my mind a little... cheers all. Don’t forget to like and comment if you enjoyed this vid as it helps the algorithm to make it worthwhile and makes more projects like this one possible in the future. If you enjoyed it consider subscribing for 100+ other vids I’ve already made plus tons more epics in the future. Hopefully soon I should be able to travel overseas again and widen the focus out a bit from Britain once again!! Cheers for watching. Catch y’all next time.

I studied History, Archaeology, Celtic Civilisation and Classical Civilisation at the University of Glasgow, with a lot of focus on the transitions from Late Antiquity through to the High Middle Ages, and did a course that covered the Welsh poetry covered here, and several on the Anglo-Saxon world. all under some of the leading scholars in these fields. I can say with some authority then, that this is a colossal work for one person to achieve. Even knitting these threads together into a coherent written narrative would be a massive challenge, let alone single-handedly producing a 3 and a half hour film that even someone with a casual interest could enjoy.. The scale and scope of such a tale is enormous and exceptionally difficult to understand, and yet you have made it easily digestible. I will recommend this video as a starting point for anyone wishing to understand the "Dark Ages", and indeed for any scholar of the period to enjoy. Wonderful, wonderful piece of work. Bravo!

When Simon Schama's 'History of Britain' series was released on the BBC at the start of the Millennium it was hailed as a major TV event. In his series he goes from the fall of Roman Britain to the age of Alfred the Great in about two minutes. Now, for free, around 20 years later we can watch a documentary that's over three hours long just about that same era that Schama brushed over in a few short paragraphs. That's truly amazing. Thanks for your work.

This. Was. FANTASTIC. You took one of the most difficult periods in western history - one where historians know so little - and made a THREE HOUR documentary out of it. You taught me *everything*. I seriously barely knew *any* of this - and I spent a huge part of my history major on emphasizing in Medieval Studies. I took at least one course on Britain in Late Antiquity/Early Middle Ages, attended countless lectures, and read who knows how many books, and you blinded me with an entire course (or more) of material that was entirely new to me. What you set out to do with this documentary was a superhuman effort, and you did it with flawless style.

@Orbán Viktor Mihály There is so much history that most will never hear of or understand. I thought the Dark Ages were called such because there weren't many historians and not much was known. Knowing now that it was literally dark for generations because of whatever nature threw at the human race; volcanoes, meteors, plagues and incomprehensible weather conditions. This is an amazing body of work. I'm delighted to know more of the land where I was born in post-war Britain at Burderop Park R.A.F., Swindon. Growing up in West Texas I learned the history of these lands and not much besides the history of the European settlers. Not much of the history of those peoples that came here and made a new civilization. Thank you for the knowledge. I understand a little more of the ancients and what is left of those early Christian cultures.

The mythos, the presentation, the era, the wonder, the speculation, the imagining, the simple truth that entire worlds (however small) can be lost or altered by the stroke of a pen is somewhat maddening & riveting. It teeters on defiance of the imagination. Yet there so equally defiant stand the ruins and records. I'd shake your hand and buy a sturdy round on your part, if ever we met. Ancient India talks of different ages of "virtue" for humans. The dark ages is the lowest age, the middle of the Kala Yuga, as we've seen, was very brutal and materialistic. We recently entered the age of Energy, the Dwapara Yuga, around the 1900's I think. Just throwing that out there.

Just finished watching with a standing ovation, throwing roses, wiping tears and forever grateful to this immeasurable gem of knowledge. I could see this turning into an awesome show, each King, his story, his lands, and his battles a 60 minute episode leading into the next episode of his heir, every season changing to a different location of another Lord’s story, leading into the finale, where they all join forces for the final battle against their common enemy. I found this show after my nephew who is obsessed with rapper Eminem tells me that Em is the 33rd great grandson of Rhodri the Great..I didn’t know who that was (neither did he) so I went looking for info and here I am. To me even though we have technology n medicine n can make money doing things..compared to the characters in history they’re the ones who lived real lives. This was amazing thank u for making this!

i love how you present historical legends- describing what they did and what people wrote about them, then revealing at the end of this what we know them as. It makes it really easy to understand how magic was so readily believed in and how history so easily became legendaric. When I go walking in the peak district, and climb to the top of a hill, you can see the north stretched all around, and I imagine how it must have looked to the people that lived here thousands of years before us. Your documentary made me think about how there is still a roman fort down the road from where I live- I walk past it's old walls on my way to work- and how someone else walked past the same walls 2000 years ago. I wonder if they were also tired and complaining about going to work, and if teenagers went to hang out by the old roman walls when they were bored like they do now. I wonder what people will think of us in 2000 years, and what will remain, and if people like you will dedicate themselves to trying to find out who we were. I have watched this in segments over the last 4 days and been riveted. You are fantastic at this, Mr History Time. Thank you very much.

Its something like 535 536 and 538 there was frosts in July in tree rings in Europe. The collapse of the Bronze Age was something similar but on a much longer scale, in Babylonian texts they say 18 years without a summer, with scientists then taking sediment readings and they showed it was a 300 year period of significant cooling. The reason the Eurasian genepool is so small is because for 40,000 years we have been subject to the most extreme climate shifts where it has thinned the numbers to such an extent that only the strongest and most gifted people survived. After each cooling event and massive death rates it presses the reset button on what the world was like before allowing people with no standing to rise up in society. This makes way for new ideas and inventions and this constant cycle of destruction and rebuilding the world new again is what turned Eurasians into the most successful people on the planet. Previous to the Bronze Age collapse iron had been used for centuries before in jewellery so it wasnt like they had not discovered iron previous to the collapse, but the collapse of civilizations that traded tin on order to make bronze and the breakdown of the trade networks ended the Bronze Age in the Med and Middle East which forced them to start making weapons out of iron. Iron then lead to steel, but would we have ever made steel if we never had this collapse in the first place...

References to Ragnarok from the Sagas------Gylfaginning chapter Chapter 51 provides a detailed account of Ragnarök interspersed with various quotes from Völuspá, while chapters 52 and 53 describe the aftermath of these events. In Chapter 51, High states that the first sign of Ragnarök will be Fimbulwinter, during which time three winters will arrive without a summer, and the sun will be useless. High details that, prior to these winters, three earlier winters will have occurred, marked with great battles throughout the world. During this time, greed will cause brothers to kill brothers, and fathers and sons will suffer from the collapse of kinship bonds. High then quotes stanza 45 of Völuspá. Next, High describes that the wolf will swallow the sun, then his brother will swallow the moon, and mankind will consider the occurrence as a great disaster resulting in much ruin. The stars will disappear. The earth and mountains will shake so violently that the trees will come loose from the soil, the mountains will topple, and all restraints will break, causing Fenrir to break free from his bonds.

Thank you from a one-time Medieval History student at university. I enjoyed the blending of scenery, archaeology, old texts, and the annals of the kings and kingdoms that came and went. Having read Bede, and being familiar with the expansion and uniting of the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms, it was good to hear the contemporary British, Pictish, and Irish/Scottish history -- where the ebbs and flows of the north -- and intermarriages between Celtic and Anglian dynasties -- mirror what happened in the south ... where you get, for example, a "West Saxon" leader with the curiously Welsh-like name of Caedwealla. It is interesting that the Northumbrian nobility, just before Bede's time, included people like Cedd and Chad (who became prominent bishops and saints) -- whose names are Celtic, not Germanic. This seems to indicate some serious intermixing of Celts and Anglo-Saxons, even at the highest levels of society. The Angles' language -- with a fair dose of Norse influence -- won out culturally, but that does not mean that every Celtic inhabitant had been replaced by an Anglo-Saxon immigrant. Britain reflects *many* successive waves of influence, and the history you relate is as much the heritage of modern Britain as the history of the Anglo-Saxons (as interesting as that is too).

Its like calling jack sparrow a pirate when.. he really wasnt.

You’ve outdone yourself - I’ve told more people about History Time than I can count (I work part time in a book store and various topics come up all the time with customers) and HT should be much better known! Your work, narration, editing, choice of material, presentation both visually and content, is superb! I’m a history wonk so HT is catnip for me, this is surely one of the best, bravo!!!!

Quality work as always, mate. I have just followed on your British Roman history post with this in one hit which gave me about five hours watching (it's OK, I have a sleep disorder and am insomniac) and have genuinely loved every second of it. Apart from the undoubtedly excellent historical content concerning a period which fascinates me, I love your cinematographic skills, if I may call them that. Presumably stock footage of a candle being blown out, flames and sparks rising, and the crucifix against the sun etc. coupled with entirely appropriate music just makes the entire piece so atmospheric. If you tell me you took all those images yourself then I think I shall form a fan club in your honour! I know you mentioned in commentary that the alleged "dark ages" are something of a favourite of yours so I am off for a trawl now to find something else. Another sleepless night awaits.

Show love to Ireland. Ireland has contributed a lot. A lot of Britons industry wouldn't have happened without the Irish. And when England was so ugly to Irish people, some of them moved to the US, where their offspring created space programs and invented luner landing moduels. Ireland is a good place.

This is maybe the 5th or 6th time I’ve watched this particular episode. Absolutely love the content! Some of the most comprehensive historical documentaries I’ve ever seen. Adding the fact that you’re doing this entirely independently is truly remarkable; wholly deserving of praise for your hard work and dedication. You are clearly a gifted individual and whether this comment is ever seen or not, I wish to extend my personal thanks for making this accessible; entirely free. To those of us who are fascinated by history and interested in learning it is itself quite a generous gift. 🍻

While I can not speak with the authority of some of the comments given here, I can speak for those of us with a casual interest in the history of my ancient ancestors and those who forged these people into who they became... and I'd like to be entertained while following my interests. You have created an impressive work that held my interest for the whole of it's 3 hours plus and you have even inspired me to look up some further information... following a few more of the many threads you exposed and left... tantalizingly... off your topic... thank you for an informative and entertaining afternoon. I look forward to more, as such have subscribed and am about to browse through your other creations.

I would say that this is television worthy, but I wouldn't dare insult your work like that. This was astounding good sir. As a massive nerd for the medieval age, I envy you your time of exploring. Thank you for what you do. I can't properly convey how important works of art like this are to humanity.

Quality Work - Thank you for putting such effort and enthusiasm into this! I'd love to hear more on the Kingdom of Elmet. I had noticed Welsh sounding place names while driving through rural areas of West Yorkshire, and was fascinated to discovered that there was a Brythonic Kingdom there so late into the 7th century.

This video is an exciting and exhilarating journey through some stunning mountain landscapes on a motorcycle. The videographer has done an excellent job of capturing the beauty and grandeur of the scenery in clear, high-quality footage, which really immerses the viewer in the experience. The use of music is also well-done and helps to create a sense of adventure and excitement. The motorcycle rider's skill and control are impressive, and it's amazing to watch them navigate the winding mountain roads with such ease and confidence. The editing is smooth and well-paced, making it an enjoyable and engaging watch from start to finish. Overall, this video is a great reminder of the freedom and excitement of motorcycle travel and the beauty of the natural world. Highly recommended for anyone who loves motorcycles or nature!
