@Astuga6 жыл бұрын
Actually it was less glorious then the title of the video claims. There are very few Roman sources who describe these events (and they are to be taken with a grain of salt). And very likely for a reason. In the end all those military actions were very costly also for the Romans and they didn`t achieve their main objective. In the time following they made use of a more defensive military strategy. Which turned out to be more effective in the long run. Due to the conflicts between the Germanic tribes themselves.

"Rome was in her six hundred and fortieth year when the alarm of the Cimbrian arms was first heard, in the consulship of Caecilius Metellus and Papirius Carbo. Reckoning from that year to the second consulship of the emperor Trajan, we get a total of about two hundred and ten years. Such is the time it is taking to conquer Germany. In this long period much punishment has been given and taken. Neither by the Samnites nor by the Carthaginians, not by Spain or Gaul, or even by the Parthians, have we had more lessons taught us. The freedom of Germany is capable of more energetic action than the Arsacid despotism. After all, what has the East to taunt us with, except the slaughter of Crassus? And it soon lost its own prince Pacorus and was humbled at the feet of Ventidius. But the Germans routed or captured Carbo, Cassius, Aurelius Scaurus, Servilius Cacpio, and Mallius Maximus, and robbed the Republic, almost at one stroke, of five consular armies. Even from Augustus they took Varus and his three legions. And we had to pay a high price for the defeats inflicted upon them by Gaius Marius in Italy, by Julius Caesar in Gaul, and by Drusus, Tiberius, and Germanicus in their own country. The boastful threats of Gaius Caesar ended in farce. After that came a lull, until the Germans took advantage of our dissensions and civil wars to storm the quarters of the legions and make a bid for possession of Gaul. This attempt ended in another defeat for them; but the more recent 'victories' claimed by our commanders have been little more than excuses for celebrating triumphs." TACITUS Germania

It is interesting to reflect that Germanicus had all the qualities to make a superb Roman Emperor but for his untimely death. His family was treated very poorly by Tiberius but one of his sons, Caligula, "little boots" as his father's soldiers called him, followed after Tiberius as Emperor with high hopes that he would be just like his dad. Caligula quickly turned into a full blown monster, as terrible as any Emperor, before he was assassinated after 4 of so years.

Octavian compelled Tiberius to set aside his Son Drusus by Vispania in Favor of Germanicus his Nephew. Drusus had to remain outside Rome until Octavian dies and he could be brought to Rome to join his father Tiberius. One last insult from Octavian who didn't want Tiberius to be Emperor. Tiberius had strong reservations about his Nephew based on how he acted and handled himself with the Revolt of the Army on the Rhine. To the credit of Drusus, he cooperated with his Father as he knew it was not his fathers doing. Germanicus was likely poisoned by someone close to Piso; Tiberius' hands are 'clean'. Octavian's place in history was saved by his Step Son whom he didn't favor but had no choice as his two other nephews were dead in accidents.

Actually, Tiberius took good care of Germanicus' children. Germanicus' sons Nero and Drusus Caesar were adopted by Drusus the Younger, Tiberius' son, and boosted their careers in the senate, praising them and promising both the office of Quaestor in 5 years time because both were before the legal age at the time. where it all went to shit though, was with the Praetorian prefect Sejanus. He went out of his way to poison Drusus the younger, prosecute and execute the family of Germanicus, in the end only Caligula, Agrippina the younger, Drusilla, and Livilla remained of his children.

Since Egypt, Germanicus got more and more sick and suspected that Piso had cursed him.😅 Germanicus didn't die all of a sudden. But his body did display signs of poisoning. For a while, he was the leader of the Cherusci, who was officially a Roman ally at that point in time. When he executed his planned ambush, the Romans were still under the impression that the Cherusci were allies. Later, the Romans learned that the Tribe had split into two factions. One wanting to remain allied with Rome led by Segestes...and the other faction wanting to break allegiance, led by Arminius. Arminusx of course won. Rome arranged an expedition to rescue the faction that argued to remain allied once the Romans learned of their allies' now uncertain situation.
@res_publica_romana6 жыл бұрын
You have to be really careful with judging the success of Germanicus' incursions in Germania. The empire just suffered the catastrophe of the Teutoburg battle and the death of Augustus and Tiberius was a really unpopular Princeps. They really needed a success and a uniting figure of some sort and it is possible that the sources of those events are not telling the whole truth or definately portray the events in a very pro-Roman way. It is also very much possible to assume that Arminius, who was under threat from both the, at this point, unrivaled Roman Empire and also fellow Germanics like Marbod and Segestes, is the real winner here - against all odds. Because the Romans were never able to gain complete controll over the Germanics, which would be a thorn in their side for centuries to come. At best, it seems, Germanicus was able to achieve a number of minor victories and in total, a draw against Arminius' tribal confederation.
@yip_the_yap6 жыл бұрын
I'd say it's a bit of a reach to claim that Romes victories were at best minor, simply because no more attempts were made to annex germania. I think a much more balanced view is that the Roman's simply no longer viewed Germania as worth the trouble or risk of assimilation.
@res_publica_romana6 жыл бұрын

@@Bakarost I will advice, though, to take Gibbon's work with a lot of salt. The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire is a monumental work and massively influential. It is also over 240 years old; many of its conclusions have been criticized or debunked; it is still a fascinating insight on Rome, but must not be taken at face value.

''I Claudius''. Even though it's a novel based on the life of Germanicus's brother, it is written based on very well researched information and offers a different point of view about the life of the members of the Octavian-Claudian dynasty.

Then Drusus died as he felt from his horse during the campaign His brother Tiberius arrived as he died. They were following the policy of Augustus to set the border to the Elba river Augustus had failed previous attempt to do this by a fleet of Aenobarbus. Augustus had failed to conquer Germany but Roman propaganda could not admit the failure Augustus admired the virgin strength of the German tribes and his bodyguard was the German guard Tiberius hated Germans and when emperor get rid of the German guard and starts the Pretorian He tought the Germans not suit to integration and abandoned the conquest plan

Germanicus did win battles against Arminius (while severely losing others, and ending some effectively in a tie), but he was most definitely not successful in his campaign objectives into Germania Magna, completely failing to revive the conquest of the territory east of the Rhine. He neither managed to convince Arminius to give in, nor did he capture or kill him, he failed to break the alliance of Germanic tribes and didn't manage to decisively decimate the Germanic forces, which continued to be a considerable threat and lead Rome to change its strategic approach from conquest and expansion to securing and controlling a border with only rather limited campaigns beyond it. The fact that he recovered only two of the three lost Eagles was considered a symbolic sign of failure, much like the fact that he found himself unable to rebuild the memorial tumulus at the Varus battle site after the Germani had first destroyed it. Tiberius considered Germanicus' campaigns as catastrophic and too costly, and recalled him with the promise of preserving his honor regardless. All this hogwash around Germanicus' "superiority" and "minor Roman losses" vs. "huge German(sic) casualties" and a "brilliantly fought campaign" smacks of fiction and propaganda. Apart from that you are missing two things: The near disaster of Caecina (losing 15.000 soldiers in one battle alone at the Pontes Longi) and the panic in Vetera when only Agrippina maiors intervention stopped the garrison from destroying the rhine bridge, saving the withdrawing legions. These incidents of 15 AD don't indicate a very succesful campaign of Germanicus. Considering Arminius being able to defeat Marobodus 17 AD (Marbodus have had a 74.000 srtong army) his losses to Germanicus in 16 AD couldn't have been crippling. Germanicus led 8 Legions into Germania, a third of the imperial army, without lasting success. Compare this with Vespasians 3 legions (plus allies) in Iudaea or Traians 7 Legions in his first dacian war, both successful campaigns. Even Tacitus described Arminius as victorious: "wining some and losing som battles but unbeaten in war and with no doubt the Liberator of Germania".

Augustus held tiberius as the last choice of being his heir because he knew that tiberius wasn't the best Drusus and Germanicus were his top choices

Tiberius was actually a very talented general. He was the reason the eagle standards were retrieved from Parthia. And many times he had to come and help Drussus in the west. The problem with Tiberius was that he was unwilling and uninterested. He made great efforts to avoid becoming Emperor. Even withdrawing from politics and declaring himself a private citizen. (Augustus had to beg him to come back when everyone else died) While Augustus was still alive, Tiberius tried to groom several individuals to become Emperor, just so that he himself could escape becoming emperor. But these kept on being assassinated😅. Germanicus, became Tiberius' new attempt to escape political life. It was Tiberius who fast tracked Germanicus' career. Putting Germanicus through the political ladder in record time (these were literal records). He even put Germanicus at the head of an army at age 21, just so hie career could go faster. When Tiberius recalled Germanicus from Germania, Tiberius had basically made Germanicus co-emperor, who was given authority over the Eastern Part of the Empire. The eastern part had less supervision due to its distance and the governors there got away with a lot of autonomy. Hence why Tiberius sent Germanicus there with supreme authority. Germanicus being made the boss, got him into a power struggle with Piso. Piso was removed from his position by Germanicus. Germanicus continued to rule the east. After going sight seeing in Egypt, Germanicus started to feel unwell. Germanicus blamed Piso for his inexplicable illness. Another one of Tiberius' groomed heirs died.😅 And Germanicus wasn't the last.

"Long cherished democracy . . . "? Erm, you do realize that Rome was an oligarchy yes? While senators were (usually) elected by 'the people', the consuls were 'elected' by the Centuriate Assembly while emperors obviously were seldom anything more than dictators however much they and their lackeys pretended otherwise . . . @Lewis Sparks The Roman republic wasn't a real democracy tho. Rome was always an oligarchy, in republican and imperial times. There is some irony tho. The populares, the political faction that actually wanted more "democratic" rights for the common Roman citizens, got hijacked for personal gain by opportunists like Caesar, which in the end resulted in Rubicon and the decline of the republic.

Thus, even had Germanicus avoided assassination to become emperor, Rome would still have to bear the ruin of Caligula, Claudius might well have followed him, and possibly Nero, too. That is called Fate.

I'd doubt any of those would have become Emperor had a germanicus lived a long life. And Caligula would not have experienced his entire family wiped out, and himself growing up in horribly circumstances.

Germanicus Gen. Aulus Caecina with his Legions was near the same fate like Varus a few years before but he escaped with luck and because the Germanic Warriors did not hear to Arminius to wait with the attack until the Legions are on the march again, Caecina and his Legions escaped with high losses. Also a Stormflood and bad Weather cost the romans under Germanicus many Men during the Campaign. So what about restored honor,? nothing was achieved Tiberius forced them to retreat to the Rhine border and many Men and material lost during the Campaign

A common misconception is having Germanicus as a Republican. This is not the case. He believed in the divine quality of the living emperor and his mother (Tiberius and Livia, in his case), and, while he greatly discouraged veneration toward his own person, he received it anyway, as Ovid says, and apparently never opposed it. It is clear Germanicus and his inner circle had strong Eastern influence, mainly inherited by his mother Antonia and his grand-father Anthony. If anything, Tiberius and the senators close to him, like Piso, were closer to a Republican government - but the history of early principate is very far from a simple bad empire vs good republic conflict.
