My dad has an interesting story of his encounter with the UDA. My dad ( Catholic from the Republic ) used to deliver show cars to car shows or dealerships from Dublin port to around Ireland ( North and South. ) While delivering a new Audi V8 around 1990 to Derry/Londonderry. Shortly after he crossed the border my dad encountered an armed UDA checkpoint in a narrow lane. My Dad couldn't go up. They would see hes Catholic and from the Republic if he pulled so my Dad had the option of trying to J turn the car around and drive back or floor the Audi through the checkpoint and duck to avoid any fire from the UDA. My dad decided to turn the car around and floor it, preparing to be shot. The speed of that Audi got him out of there unscathed and thankfully no shots were fired. My Dad lives to tell the story thankfully.

@@tinhizzy8634 UDA riots you say? Hm. Working class Unionists (rightly if I'm honest) believe that their legitimacy is minimized by the general tide of pro-Irish, IRA sympathizing press, academics and self-flagellating educated Brits. Working class unionists were left behind educationally in a way that has really stung their communities and stunted their ability to make their case. Everybody suffered in the North. The IRA made a lot of money in the US in the 70s-80s. They were incredibly politically aware, excellent manipulators of narrative and often educated. It has been portrayed as though Irish Catholics were the only people deprived or struggling here and that their deprivation was solely due to British oppressive influence. The colourful myths of the IRA's honour, stories and martyrs, the pitiful photo-ops always seized upon. The international community views Catholics as an entirely oppressed people in the North when that is just untrue. IRA are now better armed, better financed, have more clout/reverence in their communities and now have many allies in the PSNI/ armed services. The UDA are scum but less well-supported scum. Do you support any paramilitary organisation? These groups have given psychopaths in both communities neat excuses for pure fucking evil for too many years. Remember Jean McConnville? The Scottish soldiers ouside Kelly's cellars? Miami showband? Endless bombs, shootings... I don't want to go back to it. We can't be supporting any of this no matter how hard they try to divide us 🕊 I think a politically united Ireland would do the Island and her people no favours. We are all Irish by virtue of being born in Ireland. I've seen the way the Republic is run, worked and lived there for years, spent plenty of time around southerners. They barely even want Donegal. Dublin has become a dickhead filled European capital, impossible to live in. At least Belfast retains some aspect of it's working class roots, doesn't have to pander to the new Irish oppressors of Google, Facebook, Apple. "Ireland 2040" is something I want no part in. As long as the North continues to grow in its respect for Irish cultural identity as it has done, I do not see how political unification could benefit us. Too much upheaval in an already fragile region. We need the NHS for all the PTSD anyway. I wish I was joking. 100 years of this country. Try to understand what it is before wanting to tear it down. Hard to be unbiased with so much history, so many lives lost. I pray that the peace here might deepen.

Northern Ireland folk have both Scottish and English ancestry. Which is why they have a natural affinity with Britain. And in fairness, there isn’t really a difference between English and Scottish people, since the people who lived in Lowland Scotland were ethnically and linguistically identical to the people in England - which is why the Scots language sounds so similar to English. (Reposting can't be arsed to type this out again) With the current state of N.Irelad being stuck & tugged at by two larger entities(UK & EU), the checks between N.Irelad & Britan, along with tensions rising & people being provoked (such as the large funeral for the former ira member that went on in Belfast... I get it funeral whatever but doing it on such a scale right now there is no way it won't piss people off) I'd wager a fair amount of violence will pick up before it returns to the lower levels of violence... For some reason many I've spoken to that live in Britan think the violence had stopped for all these years after the GFA was signed... Ha hardly the violence has never stopped more so it's been bubbling under the surface with small incidents every now & then.. The divide in my area is quite visible as well one side flying high with the flags of the Ulster banner, St.George cross, Union Jack & the various paramilitary groups.. With just across in one smaller area flying the tri colour of the R.O.I... Just as a quick example of that divide.. Living in an area mainly under UVF control honestly hasn't been shite for me tho then again I've known a few members & I fade into the background & do not go out of my way to piss them off... Unlike those who still from time to time "disappear" if you've angered the wrong people.. N.Ireland is more likely to be burnt to ashes than to unify with R.O.I in my opinion.. Not that I like the idea of unifying, I also don't like the idea of my homeland being burnt to ashes.. I do wish people would leave N.Ireland alone rather than try to use her & end up stoking more problems from our not so distant past.

For all of the big talk from Republicans on both sides of the border they don’t have a plan that they can agree on. 3. NI is a net recipient in the UK and will continue to be for a while. The RoI can’t afford NI and this is well known. 4. NI in the future will be booming and it will draw people from the RoI, rest of UK and the rest of the world. When that happens NI will become a net contributor to the UK. However it STILL won’t join the RoI because then excuse not to join the RoI would be “we’ve done well out of the UK. We’re booming!”. 5. The UK will outlast the EU. Why join the RoI who’s only real perk is being a member of a union which will break up anyway? The problems the EU have are far greater then the UK’s.

Even from a neutral point of view, the will for a united Ireland is still growing in the North. And when that happens, who knows when, many Loyalists will be unhappy about it, and I could imagine that they could potentially become violent and the "Real IRA" will jump to the fight very hastily in retaliation, but of course they're not the IRA they're a bunch of gangsters who in reality are more focused on fighting than a united Ireland, so the dick heads from both sides could potentially spark it up again. Just this time there'd be no real moral righteousness, just some salty Loyalists angry that they were voted against and some meat head gangsters focused on violence. Theoretically.

Your stuff is normally amazing but there are a few issues and mistakes here. Firstly you can't really talk about the UDA/UFF without talking about the UVF/RHC. The rivalry between the two groups, the UDA's links to the British far right (google mad dog) and the fact that unlike the UVF who had a fairly well established political wing the PUP (under David Ervine and Guthy Spence) the UDA wasn't particularly interested in politics with their political wing barely functioning. This at times left them pretty directionless. You also didn't mention the Combined Loyalist Military Command which was set up in the early 90s which was an alliance between the UDA, UVF, RHC which gave the movement direction, helped them actually become effective (the only years where loyalists out killed the IRA were the early 90s) in targeting Republicans. Without this pressure on Republicans and without the guidance of the Combined Command it is doubtful the ceasefire would have happened in 1994 leading to the good Friday agreement. Also when you said they had a big shipment of weapons from Lebanon you were a bit wrong. The guns were captured by the Israelis from the PLO in Lebanon and bought through the help of South Africa agents with money from a bank robbery. The guns actually were jointly shared between the UVF, UDA and a group called Ulster Resistance, The UVF and UDA guns were actually intercepted and it was the Ulster Resistance guns that got through. The UDA and UVF were then given some guns by them when they disbanded.

that’s actually quite inaccurate considering the IRA can be traced back to the IRB. The UVF (when formed) consisted of catholic members such as members of the gaelic league and also the ancient order of hibernian.
